In between helicopter chases, exploding automobiles escapes helped by fortuitous good strangers, developing straight and (hackneyed) lesbian romance, surprise weaponry, sophisticated ruses, and timely admissions, there is little chance to develop the other characters’ relatively one-note personalities.
The topic of filicide, which is still somewhat taboo and serious, feels like just another cheap stunt in the barrage of extravagant plans.

Even while I can’t claim that I found all the facts to be absolutely realistic, I was enthralled. And then there was Four has elements of the suspense stories by Lois Duncan that I adored as a young adult, but with more information and a more contemporary viewpoint.
A significant character is gay, there is some ethnic and socioeconomic diversity, social media plays a significant part, etc.
The connections that the characters develop are truly challenging but strengthened by shared tragedy. All the characters are fascinating and nuanced. Since you should read this book with as little prior knowledge as possible, I won’t mention anything else here.
Just have faith in me. And Then There Were Four is a thought-provoking tale that will have readers turning the pages. I’m happy that I was able to finish it in two 24-hour sessions, and I advise other readers to try the same. An outstanding thriller that comes highly recommended for summer reading!
