There is no denying that romance novels have stood on the top spot as the most popular genre in recent years. This made the competition among romance writers become fiercer and many started adding twists to their novels. There are a lot of ways to do that from manipulating characters to changing the setting.
The Masked Prince did the latter! Instead of the usual modern-day characters, the author went back centuries ago to write a fantasy romance featuring the royal family and the nobles. In a period where war, slavery, and monsters were a thing, how would Evelyn and Regan navigate their budding feelings?

Part 1: The Main Characters of The Masked Prince

Prince Regan

Part 2: The Main Plot of The Masked Prince
In a world where wealth and power are the most important and killing is the easiest way to protect those, would you still want to fight for it? The Masked Prince is a story of betrayal and trust among the members of the Royal family.
The story started with the empire having a banquet to celebrate the victory of the Empire of Alfaros over the Empire of Zamorin. All nobles and royal family members are present, especially the hero of the war, Prince Regan.
While these nobles were celebrating, a group of slaves are being imported inside the palace for the later show. These slaves were excited because they thought they will have it easier as palace slaves.
Peri, Evelyn’s friend, even thought of sleeping with one of the princes so that she could become a concubine. However, this wishful thinking was bound to crumble as soon as the knights announced what they would be here for to entertain the guests using their life.
In the next second, the slaves were inside an arena. A beast was unleashed and all the slaves were now running for survival and the nobles started betting among themselves.
With Evelyn’s intelligence, she immediately figured out the way to survive. They needed to run towards the door and figure out how to open it. She could run and win by herself but Peri always dragged her down. Despite that, she never abandoned her friend.
But this kindness was bound not to be returned. Peri was able to leave the arena but Evelyn wasn’t because the former pushed her. She also lied to Prince Rafael that she was the one who thought of that solution.
Unbeknownst to them, Prince Regan knew what transpired and he had already sent his trusted aide to help Evelyn.

Prince Regan heard of this and also went to punish the head maid. In chapter 16, it was revealed that Prince Regan punished the head maid by cutting her hands. Rex also questioned him if Evelyn was really just a slave to him.
Was it really possible for Prince Regan to go to such lengths for a slave?
Part 4: Review of The Masked Prince
The author did a good job in worldbuilding. Although the story is character-driven, it was also necessary to plan the world for the readers to also feel that they were also in the story. Plus, this novel also features palace intrigues which may be new to some readers.
Evelyn is a role-worthy heroine. Despite being a slave, you would be able to see how smart and brave she was. She dared to dream, and she also has the guts to fulfill it. Her past was shrouded in mystery and the story slowly unraveled it as the tension between the romance of the two protagonists heightened.
Prince Regan was also clouded with mystery. He might be dark and grim to the outside world but it never hindered him to be good to his people. He and Evelyn have great chemistry together although the romance developed slowly.
Overall, The Masked Prince is a complex read that might not be finished in one sitting. It needs preparation and willingness to read because there are a lot of details in the novel that is needed for readers to understand the whole plot.
