Part 1: Summary of Granting You A Dreamlike Life
A food critic Lin Jing Yun who was born and bred in France returns to her family home to find an old diary that chronicles a love story between a popular actress Tian Ying Ruomeng and the son of a triad leader Luo Fu Sheng in 1930s Shanghai.
The plot premise of Granting You A Dreamlike Life is founded on the return of a food critic Lin and the discovery of an old diary. Basically, this is a story about love that follows a modern-day woman who discovers an old diary and turns the pages to read about a moving romance in the life of Tian Ying.
In the diary, Tian Ying is torn between her feelings for two friends, Luo Fusheng and Xu Xingcheng. She is beginning to fall for the gentle and sweet Xu Xingcheng but she’s intrigued by the arrogance displayed by Luo Fusheng. However, Hong Lan is secretly in love with Luo Fusheng.
Meanwhile, Duan Tianci imagines himself engaged with Tian Ying and will do anything to protect her. What will Lin Jing Yun discover about her own history through this diary? Granting You A Dreamlike Life is a culinary drama that revolves around three generations of families who suffer through constant losses and separations.

Part 2: Main Protagonists of Granting You A Dreamlike Life
Lin Jing Yun
In Granting You A Dreamlike Life, Lin Jing Yun is a senior editor for a food magazine and a Chinese-American cuisine reviewer. While she was raised in France, she now travels to Shanghai to sample the local cuisine and rediscover her roots. She learns about Duan Tian Ying’s life in Shanghai during the 1920s in an old diary that belonged to her.
Lin Jing Yun actually has an enticing background. She appears interesting. That “food critic background” of hers is solid. Yet, I didn’t get all that I expected from her character.
Lou Fu Sheng
Here in Granting You A Dreamlike Life, Duan Ti’s diary told about how she was torn between her two friends – Lou Fu Sheng and Xu Xincheng. Fu Sheng’s character in Granting You A Dreamlike Life was described as arrogant, so he was often shown both in the book and in the film as a badass.
Arrogant male leads are actually interesting. Such characterization adds color to the plot so I wouldn’t say that I don’t like Fu Sheng’s character, moreover that he was set in contrast to his love rival here Xu Xincheng who was described as a gentleman. Well, Fu Sheng isn’t the gentleman type but he has a good heart for sure.
Duan Tian Ting
The diary belongs to her. So, expect that Granting You A Dreamlike Life will give you a bunch of flashbacks as it tells the complicated story of love rivalries involving Duan Tian, Fu Sheng, and Xi Cheng. Duan Tian is a bubbly opera singer who crosses paths with two young masters from prominent families.

Part 3: Plot Review of Granting You A Dreamlike Life
I think first that I didn’t like about Granting You A Dreamlike Life was its way of storytelling. The presentation of the plot events from the present up to the long flashbacks is quite confusing for me. But the premise was there, it was actually solid and unique.
I’m not saying that this is not nice, I just think this could have been better if the plot was presented in ways that don’t bore nor confuse the readers.
Granting You A Dreamlike Life actually has a unique plot concept – a food critic discovering an old diary which will lead her to discover her roots, and her past.
That’s all unique and nice. I was looking more at the storytelling in a way where I could feel more thrill, and more connected to the characters, where I could feel more about the love stories of the characters presented here. Maybe that was something lacking here in Granting You A Dreamlike Life, a storytelling that gets right to the readers’ hearts.
Part 4: Similar Book To Granting You A Dreamlike Life
If you love culinary romance stories like this Granting You A Dreamlike Life, I’m sure you will love Serendipitous Love too. One thing I love about Serendipitous Love is its chill vibe of a love story. This is like reading a breath of fresh air with no heavy or tragic conflicts in the plot, plus the culinary setting of the story added a different atmosphere to the plot.
Serendipitous Love tells the love story of Jacob and Jacqui. Jacob was known to be the rich handsome most sought bachelor. Many girls were after him but he’s only interested in pursuing one girl which he tried dating years ago but has failed many times. Jacqueline Avila is the girl. And she’s not the same as those girls. She’s aloof with men.
