Nerdy to Badass Wolf is a novel that took me by surprise with its change in tone. The story starts off with Skylar being woken up by her triplet brothers, Will, Cole, and Liam. We get to know how they treat her sister, annoying her but deeply caring for her. Skylar prepares herself with plain apparel and eats her surprise breakfast, chocolate chip pancakes.

While being driven to school on her last day before she would be gone for a year, Skylar thinks about her school’s bully and playboy, Alpha Kyle Black. He had made her life miserable in school, calling her names and humiliating her to the best of his ability. Though, she was used to it.

This is a very typical situation in a lot of novels, and it obviously nods to the bully and Skylar getting together, though reading further lessens the click elements.

As Skylar enters school, we get introduced to two of her friends. We start off with Dylan, who’s a sweet friend, and gives Skylar an amazing bracelet that marks them as best friends. This was a very cute moment and honestly made me think of him as a very good love interest.

After a shocking discovery, she runs to Chloe, a bookworm, and interacts with her briefly before having to go out with her brothers.

The shocking discovery was Skylar’s inner wolf calling out for a mate. The scent of her mate was distinguished, and Skylar tried her very best to avoid it by going to the library. On the way to her brothers’ car, she met her mate. It was Alpha Kyle Black, which honestly everyone expected though what made this scene unique was that Kyle immediately introduces himself by rejecting Skylar as his mate. She did not care a bit and while leaving, Kyle grabs her wrist to which Skylar escapes effortlessly, going into her brother’s car.

Further Insight to Nerdy to Badass Wolf

This scene was probably the hook for most people reading. That was because there were two elements to this scene that proliferated confusion for both the reader and the characters.

The first is elaborated through Skylar’s POV. She was frustrated up till this point and wanted nothing to do with Kyle’s bullying.

She brushed him off, which was highly unusual for her but the impact of this was not quite there since we had minimal insight into what her life before was like. Though Kyle kept asking why she didn’t react to him rejecting her, and she replied by saying she’d had enough of him. She escapes him clenching her wrist, thinking he let go just because he was surprised.

We then get Kyle’s POV of this situation, I honestly love POV chapters in novels, they’re very elaborative. We get Kyle’s morning routine, followed by his driving to school. His inner wolf, like Skylar, kept thirsting for a mate and was very active.

The smell of his mate was very attractive, and he chased it down, much unlike Skylar who tried to avoid it. Upon meeting Skylar as his mate, he instinctively rejected her while noticing how beautiful she is. After seeing her stoic reaction, he calls out to her asking why she was not bothered.

In response though, she broke free of his grasp which he did not expect since he grabbed her with full force. This triggered something within Kyle that attracted him to Skylar. When she ran off with her brothers, he found out that she was the sibling of the three betas he worked with. Kyle regrets his attitude and shows sorrow for the opportunity he missed.

This was a beautiful scene. I read it three times, actually. The contrasts between the two personalities, this sudden character development, and enhancement of the plot through means that were completely unexpected by the reader, I loved all of it. Though the more I read this, the more I felt weirded out by the unnatural change of a playboy bully just by Skylar’s ability to break free of his grasp.

Part 2: Main Theme of Nerdy to Badass Wolf

Main Theme of Nerdy to Badass Wolf

The initial interpretation of this novel which I had was a plain, bold, and intricate romance with the scene I just described. However, I glanced at the title of this novel and realized that it was going to be much different from my interpretation and it was.

We get a glimpse of the reality of this novel when Skylar arrives at the place of the Ancient Wolves after her eventful trip from the airport. It turns out that Skylar is the new Moon Goddess which was prophesized to fight the Vampire King otherwise the world would face demise. The current Moon Goddess was incapable of beating him.

Skylar initially thought of this as a joke, though it was made a reality by the indication of her blue, glowing swirls in wolf form. Then Skylar has to deal with her daunting fate. The series pulled a huge plot twist on us only a few chapters in, I like that!

The comedy is well done and actually advances the plot at times which I feel is a very good use of comedy.

For example, in the eventful airport trip previously mentioned, a cashier makes a move on Skylar and after her brothers step up, the cashier brushes it off saying he only targeted Skylar because he thought she would be easy to pull. Her brothers instantly took swing after swing at the cashier till he could no longer move. This strengthened the bond of the siblings while also giving the readers a laugh.

The romance element is confusingly well done. You get fuzzy feelings while reading Kyle and Skylar’s relationship development though it inevitably does feel weird since Kyle had a complete shift in personality. The relationship initially feels alien though develops very neatly throughout the series.

Part 3: Conclusion

Nerdy to Badass Wolf is a story that undertakes many genres and fully perfects them. I loved reading every chapter of this story with its amazing descriptions and exceptional development. Kyle and Skylar’s relationship develops in a fashion that I love, Skylar especially has top-tier character development that I need to religiously appreciate.

It may be a little typical and predictable at times as well, though that does not take you away from the breathtaking story and wholesome moments of this novel.

I promise you that this is an amazing read that you will enjoy. I for one dislike the werewolf genre but found myself in love with this novel and its characters. However, the story remains incomplete to this day and there seems to be minimal hope of finding a conclusion. Still a great experience though!
