I sat in our Elephant ride on our way to school while my three sisters chatted without bothering to involve me in their conversations. “No. I liked the gold papa brought for me it was way finer than yours.” Jhanvi told them. “Well that was because you picked that before I could.” Gauri said. “Or I would have had it.” “Well it can’t beat my bangles. They were from the goddesses temple in Agra.” Arti declared. I had three sisters. Jhanvi, Gauri And Aarti. They were born in that order while I was born last. My sisters and I are the daughters of the emperor of India. We are the most envied girls in the entire India. Or rather my sisters are. I was five foot three which meant I was short while my sisters were almost six foot. They all looked beautiful with their hair made in elaborate styles and pinned with the most expensive gold jewelries. I always had my hair in a single long braid. Their Saris were always the most expensive and flamboyant while mine was always simple. The comparison with the jewelries on their necks and mine was incomparable. I literally just liked things very simple. Despite how my sisters never had any reasonable conversations I always wanted to join in, but they opposed it. Rejected it in fact. My very own sisters did not like me one bit. Almost half of the time they treated me like I was a leper. My mere presence disgraced them. When I was old enough to start going to school, my sisters had whined and complained as to why I had to follow them to school. Their reactions had even been worse when they heard that I was going to enter the same Elephant ride to school with them. In Gauri’s exact words, I was a complete disgrace. But my parents had insisted that it was the right thing to do. Our father had come back from Persia and he had brought back gifts for all of us. My sisters didn’t even let me touch a single one. “Urmi doesn’t need any of these.” Aarti had said and I had gotten absolutely nothing. When mama had noticed it she had come to me but I denied it and told her Aarti was right and I really didn’t want any of the gifts. It was the year 1834, the year of the mating. Every four years a mate was chosen for all Were children who had passed the age of eighteen. I was eighteen, Aarti was nineteen, Gauri was twenty and Jhanvi was twenty one. We had an odd way of following each other year after year. My sisters were all excited about finding their mate. I dreamt of having Prince Raj who was twenty one and the most senior at school. Twenty one was the highest anyone could be in our class. He was the son of a far emperor from the other side of India. The next Alpha and that meant he was every girl’s dream. Girls screamed at him, followed him everywhere, chased him. He was the most handsome young man I had ever seen. I sneaked looks at him but the courage I had to finally meet him was never there. I had a huge crush on him from the first day I saw him. Who was I to meet Prince Raj? Who was I for him to even know me? I doubt he even knew I existed. Our school was like an every day school that housed children of Were families. We were bred and taught until it was time for us to mate. With the way I was, I was probably going to be the only girl in our four years to not have a mate no one liked me and I was too shy to even have a conversation with anyone. “The ball is going to be so fun.” I heard Gauri say in excitement, waking me up from my thoughts. “Papa will bring us expensive Saris to pick from!” “But Urmi is going to be there.” Jhanvi said with a tone of irritation. “Ugh. And mama and papa are going to insist she goes with us..” Aarti said in disgust. I felt their eyes on me and I uncomfortably adjusted in my seat. Sometimes they acted like I wasn’t even there. The Elephant came to a halt and I knew we had arrived before the gates of school. “What are you waiting for?” Gauri snapped at me in further disgust. “Get down!” I hurriedly gathered my scrolls that I had done my assignment in and went out of the room. As I came down from the ladder that the servants had put down for me, I heard Jhanvi say. “She’s just so incompetent. Do we really have to tell her everything?” I bit my lip and stood away from the elephant ride. A servant looked at me with pity and went on with them. Everyday at school, from my first day at school my sisters had insisted I drop far from the school gates where no one could see me and then I waited for about five minutes for them to enter school before I trekked all the way to the gates. They did not want to be seen with me, in fact no one knew I was their sister. Most people thought that the emperor had only three daughters when we were four in fact. It was humiliating and I was too timid to even tell Mama. Mama would be mad and it would only make matters worse with my sisters. They were going to hate me the more. I waited hidden for my usual five minutes under an apple tree while everyone else passed to school, and then I went towards school. This was my daily morning charade. A few more days and it would be all over. I walked to school and got towards class. Everyone else were gathered towards my sisters as usual to tell them how great they looked. My sisters drunk in their glory and praises stood with everyone else while I went past like a nobody. I was going towards class when my only friend in the entire world Lakshmi came up to me. “Urmi.” She said happily to me. I turned to look at her with a smile. “Hi Lakshmi.” I said. Lakshmi was the only friend I had. Her father was the ruler over Delhi and unlike me Lakshmi was stylish. Always on point with her Saris and her jewelries. Unlike everyone else that completely ignored me, Lakshmi was the only one there for me. She walked with me, and didn’t treat me like a reject just like how everyone else did. How Lakshmi had even become my friend was that she had boldly walked up to me and asked why I was always hiding. She had pestered my life until we had become friends. The question in my mind was why did she even want to be friends with someone like me? I was a complete nobody. Lakshmi on her own part hated my sisters and my sisters in turn hated her. It was a very simple and understanding relationship between the four of them.
