Prologue
It all started on that fateful night.  People in this grand kingdom expected a storm coming in their way. Windows shut tight, doors barred, roofs have been reinforced, and the town square is as deserted as the dead of night. All were restless as the storm clouds gathered, and thunder filled the silence and the rain started to fall. The Thornhill Tavern, owned by a man named Krager, cradled in strangers who were caught by this storm. It was a busy night for Krager and he only had his hands full lest his wife and daughter helped him around the business. Each room being filled, barrels of ales emptied to keep the customers warm from the cold, hot soup and bread to fill empty stomachs, all of the houses and cabins outside are dead silent except for this tavern. Alive and loud. Krager thought that this is his night to fill his coffers; no one’s starting any trouble, all in good business. Then, someone came bursting in from the door. “Krager!” he shouted. It was just a boy. Soaked to his boots from the storm, he charged into the bar to where Krager is. “Krager! Your wife, Maelin, is needed. Quickly!” he said. “Why, boy? What’s the rush?” asked Krager. The boy leaned in, afraid to be overheard. Krager was reluctant, but his curiosity overwhelmed him. He drew closer to the boy, waiting for him to say something. “The Queen needs her, now!” the boy said with so much urgency in his voice. Krager pulled himself, and called his wife. “Maelin!” he called. Quickly, his wife appeared from a table she just served soup with. She wondered why she was called but then she saw the boy, and she knew it was time. She took off her apron, tied her hair up, and behind the bar, she was stashed in a bag full of tools and blankets. She may need these for tonight. Her daughter came down the stairs to see why his father called his mother in a tone with so much urgency. She saw the boy, and she also knew what it meant. She went back up to get her things, too.  “Krager, I’m sorry I have to leave, now. You know why I need to,” Maelin said to her husband. “For the Kingdom, Love, I am very proud of you,” he invited his wife to his arms to give her a warm embrace, and a kiss in the forehead for their blessing. His daughter came running down the stairs, too and went to her mother’s side. Her father also gave her his blessings, and embraced her. “There’s not much time, My Ladies. She needs you, now! The carriage is just outside, please!” the boy pleaded with all urgency he can muster. The ladies took off, leaving Krager to fend his own in the tavern. Maelin glanced back to see if his husband’s going to be fine. She knew he would be. After all, he is a Thornhill. Maelin and her daughter went out to the storm, and hopped into the carriage. The boy climbed in front and urged the coach to go. Into the storm, they rode.  They reached their destination, and without further ado, the mother and daughter raced the steps of the citadel led by the boy. Hoping they aren’t too late, the three run as fast as their feet could carry until they reach the Queen’s chambers. Maelin heard her scream of agony, but her sense of duty did not falter her concentration. As level headed as she can be, she burst into the Queen’s chamber, and saw her Queen, struggling in her bed. Her maid servants tended to her with shaking hands, afraid of the blood coming out from below her body. “Tanya,” she called her daughter. “Quickly now, bring out all the sheets we needed then dress me.” She then looked at the Queen’s maidservants. “All of you, I need fresh water, clean white sheets, and also hot water. Go, now!” Without a blink, three maidservants rushed out to get everything Maelin needed. She walked by the Queen’s side and gave her a reassuring smile. “I came as quickly as I can, my Queen,” she said. “My babies, they are coming,” the Queen said. “Yes, I understand. This night will be long, but for the child’s sake, stay strong. All right?” She nods. Maelin took her place, as the Queen’s midwife, she has the most delicate task of all, helping the Queen give birth. It is no easy task for she holds the blood of the Kingdom’s hope. It is in her care now to deliver the child.  “All right, My Lady. At the count of three, you have to push as much strength as you can muster,” Maelin said. “Everyone, ready the sheets, and fresh water when this little one comes out, all right?” All in the room fell silent, except for the Queen’s ragged breath. “Here we go, My Queen. One. Two. Push!” Little do they know, outside the kingdom, a lone man stood overseeing the tower where the Queen is giving birth to her child. Soaked in the cold storm, the sound of the cries of the child gave him chills, and a sinister smile to his face. The long awaited and studied plan is now at hand. The shadow will loom over the Kingdom once more, and the darkness will spread.
