CHAPTER ONE
ROSE “Rose, come on! We do not have much time. We need to get out of here!” my mate said, the urgency was clear in his voice. As I looked into his deep brown eyes, I felt his fear. We were in danger. I had stumbled onto the wet grass. My bare feet ached, and I could feel the slight trembling of my legs. We had been running for what seemed like forever. The sun had set behind us and the darkness engulfed us, making me more nervous. With the trees and darkness surrounding us, I was beginning to feel claustrophobic. It was impossible to tell which was the right way or where we were going. All I knew was that we needed to get out of the forest, fast. Rose, listen to your mate, get up! My wolf yelled back at me with a growl. She used all the strength left in her to push me to my feet. I lost my footing for a moment, but Evan caught me in his strong arms in time to keep me from falling on the floor again. “I can carry you, my love,” he said softly but I quickly brushed him off and started running. I heard Evan sigh before he trailed after me, our footsteps were unnaturally silent and fast. I knew we had to keep going. I just didn’t know from what. I couldn’t remember. All I knew was that something was coming after us, something dark, something powerful. And I wasn’t sure how we could stop it. Something urged me to turn and look back and my body froze. “Evan- “ I trailed off, he was beside me, looking at the same thing I was. A huge cloud of black smoke thundered towards us, lightning flashed inside of it, followed by the grumbling noise it left on its wake. It was moving quickly. I was sure we wouldn’t be able to outrun it. Slowly, I looked over to my mate, his eyes seemed desperate as he analyzed the cloud coming for us. His wolf growled in frustration and I knew what he was thinking, he thought he had failed me. Quickly I held onto his hand and his eyes stayed locked on mine. “It’s okay, my love. None of this is your fault,” I whispered through the mate bond as I held out my other hand to cup his cheek. He closed his eyes and turned towards my touch, gently placing a kiss on the palm of my hand. “I am so sorry, Rose.” I smiled and shook my head as I pulled him closer and let myself fall into his embrace. I held onto him as if my life depended on it. His hold on me was just as strong as mine, filled with warmth and love. “I love you, Evan Williams,” I murmured as tears ran down my cheeks. My mate’s grip on me tightened. The rumbling storm was closer, I could feel it. My hair was flowing quickly, and if I tried to speak, not even Evan would be able to hear me. Our end was near. “I love you, Rose Mason.” … I woke up gasping for air. Shivers ran through my whole body and I couldn’t help but grip the blankets tighter around me. My body felt like it was freezing, even though sweat covered me, head to toe, I couldn’t remember a time I had ever felt like this. Not even the dreams I had before, left me feeling so hollow.  Something about this dream, nightmare, or vision was different. It felt different. It took my eyes a couple of seconds for them to adjust to the darkness of my bedroom but once I could see better, I turned to look at the person sleeping next to me. I had felt the bed shift under his weight as he moved but it wasn’t until then that I saw him. Beside me, Evan had woken up as well, and he was searching for any sign of harm. “My love, are you alright?” His voice was soft, but his eyes were filled with uncertainty. It wasn’t the first time I had woken us up like this, and I had a bad feeling it wouldn’t be the last. I didn’t respond at first, my voice failed me, and it took me a couple of seconds to get my breathing back in control. Evan didn’t rush me; he took my hand gently and placed his soft lips on the back of it. I closed my eyes as I let the light, comforting shivers run through my body, calming me and my wolf. Suddenly, I felt Evan’s soft hands on my face as he brushed the tears from my cheeks. I hadn’t realized I had been crying. As the seconds passed, my body started to feel normal again. But I waited until I felt ready. Evan had his strong arms wrapped around me and he was rocking us back and forth ever so slightly. My eyes were closed as I ran my hands over my mate’s arms. I had always loved doing that. “I had a nightmare,” I began, he had probably already guessed as much but he didn’t interrupt me. “It felt like the last one. Evan, I was so scared, it felt too real.” I said with urgency in my voice. As I recalled the dream, my heart started to beat faster. Evan held onto me tighter, “shhh, it’s okay, my love. You are safe here with me. It was only a nightmare.” Not even his words could put me at ease. “No, Evan. It didn’t feel like just a nightmare. Something tells me it’s not coming from my imagination. Something bad is going to happen,” as I said the words, I believed them, they were true. For some time now, after Callie and Xander had returned from their honeymoon, I had been feeling strange. My wolf was also acting differently, she was more alert and protective now. I had once told Callie about my premonitions, how they had only presented themselves to me as feelings. I was afraid they were getting stronger now and I was starting to see visions of the future. “Do you want to talk about what you saw?” Evan asked slowly. I could tell he felt unsure about my nightmares. For months everything had been great, there were no big issues in which the Royal Moon Pack would have to interfere and Callie had been accepted by all the packs without remorse, for once there was nothing to worry about. “It was similar to the vision from last week,” I said and trailed off. I felt my mate stiffen, knowing that it wasn’t something good. “You and I were running through a dark forest. It was very hard to see. For some reason both of us had our clothes ripped and we were running barefoot. I stumbled along the way and you helped me up so that we could continue running. But it was useless, a cloud of black fog was right behind us. I felt a strong, dark force radiating from it and…” I couldn’t finish the sentence. If I said the words out loud it would make it true. William and I would die. All my former nightmares had the same ending, the only difference was the cause. And it only involved us two, only once did I dream of Helena and her daughter, but I couldn’t bring myself to tell that vision either. It wasn’t something I wanted to relive. “I’m not letting anything happen to you, Rose. Or to me. Do you understand?” my mate said as he held me at arm’s length so that I would look up to meet his eyes. His voice sounded confident and strong; Evan wasn’t one to give up. He felt he had the need to protect me, to protect the whole pack. A feeling that had been wired into him, he was the kingdom’s Duke, after all, and he wasn’t alone. I nodded my head and rested my head on his bare chest. His skin was warm and as I ran a hand over his torso, his wolf let out a rumble of delight. I smiled; I had always loved the sensations I could provoke him. My eyes widened as I felt something poking me from the side and I couldn’t help but blush as a giggle escaped me. “What amuses you, my Rose?” he asked, his voice had become low and when he placed his finger under my chin to make my eyes meet his, I got lost in his dark gaze. The desire and love inside of them were evident and tiny bolts of electricity ran down my back. I heard his wolf rumble again before his lips met mine, tenderly at first, making sure not to hurt me. He laid us down on our bed as he positioned himself over me. Then the kiss turned desperate and passionate, both of us anxious for what was to come. I pulled away for a moment, both of us were gasping for air. My mate looked at me questioningly, looking for any sign that he had hurt me. I smiled and cupped his cheek with my hand, “don’t worry love. I’m fine.” I hesitated for a moment, “let’s not tell the others about my visions yet.” Evan’s eyebrows furred and he began to protest but I quickly interrupted, “there’s nothing to tell, love. Not yet. Not until we know more. It would only make them worry.” My mate sighed but finally nodded his head in defeat, “alright. But I do not like keeping things from Xander, not things that feel important.” I raised an eyebrow, “I thought you said they were only nightmares,” I teased, and he rolled his eyes before leaning down to bite my lower lip. “If it is important to you, it’s important to me too. And your safety and well-being are the most important things to me,” he spoke with sincerity as he looked deeply into my eyes. Warmth filled me and I was surer than ever that this was the man that I loved and will always love. He was my other half. I closed the space between us and kissed him urgently, grabbing onto his dark, wavy hair. “Wait, so that means you won’t tell them?” I asked teasingly. I enjoyed keeping him on his toes. “Rose, I won’t say a word. Now, could I please get back to making love to you?” he said with a slight rumble from his chest. His eyes looked darker with every moment that passed and the tension between us was becoming very evident. I shivered with anticipation as a giggle escaped me, “I’m all yours, my love.” And that was all it took for him to growl possessively and pull me closer to him. Making me feel loved and reassuring me everything was going to be alright. Even then, there was a tiny voice at the back of my head whispering, in a dark, raspy voice, Beware, Rose Mason.
