....Just because something seems utterly unbelievable doesn’t mean it’s not real....

“There comes a time where the rationality of men must fade into insignificance and one must accept the inevitability of the truth. I am not at liberty to disclose the following documentation at this writing... perhaps it shall never see the light of public scrutiny, but I must do duty and record here for all to read one day. In a world of greed and exploitation of mankind can no longer suppress that which is truth”- Admiral Richard Byrd

Chapter 1- a letter
I stare at myself in the bathroom mirror noticing the dark circles underneath my eyes. I slept for five hours last night because we came back late from that wedding. I mean it was worth it. The bride was so pretty and I’ve never tasted cake as good as that. They looked so happy. Apparently your wedding day is the happiest day of your life. A union between two people who love each other very much and will spend the rest of their lives together. A love so deep that one would take a bullet for their lover. I wonder if I’ll ever experience such love. I do believe in soul mates. The idea that two souls have met before in another realm and in this life are searching for one another. I snap out of my thoughts and notice saemi walk into the bathroom and smile wide at me, her glossy pink lips the centre of attention. “Hey kia Guess what I have,” she giggles excitedly.” “Umm a new phone”? She shakes her head auburn ringlets of hair bouncing on her shoulders. “A new dior perfume?” I guess. “No silly, a letter... from GIOVAN!” She almost shrieks. She’s had a crush on him for like... I don’t even know how long! I can tell she’s especially excited almost like she’s gonna burst because it’s taken so long for him to notice her. “Ok, well open it then,” I tell as she jumps up and down like a toddler about to recieve a free lollipop. It’s for you sarkia,” she rolls her eyes less excited all of a sudden as she hands me the worn out envelop. I guess she was contemplating whether she should give the letter to the right person or keep it to herself and read the contents of it. I can see the annoyance on her face and I feel a slight guilt. Just in the past month I’ve recieved nearly 100 confession letters and declarations of “your so pretty will you go to the park with me?” or “I think we should get married” or even “I think I’m your soul mate I -want to be with you!” I’m flattered and thankful for the compliments and sweet words but sometimes people go too far. Once a guy- who by the way is a year younger than me wrote me a whole poem and read it in front of the whole cafeteria. Stating that I was his ‘damsel in distress’ and that I would be rescued by a ‘handsome Prince‘ (him) and live happily ever after. I felt so embarrassed and wanted to lock myself in the toilet cubicle and stay there for the rest of the day. Another time a guy called paulo heard I was going away on holiday to Japan and said he couldn’t bear to stay away from me for such a long time. The guy nearly booked a trip to Japan too so he could see me everyday! Let’s just say that I’m really well know at my school and probably the most popular female student. I don’t even like as in ‘like like’ Giovan He’s sweet and all but once I saw him trip a younger student with his huge Nike Air max 97s. Yeah the guy is rich! and just to show off his pricey shoes he goes and trips that poor 13 year old. What’s wrong with some people?? And when I went to help the kid up pretending not to notice Giovan I could see from the corner of my eye how his stupid smirk quickly disappeared as he turned around and busied himself with opening his locker. Probably embarrassed that he’d get caught being nasty to a younger student. I know guys like him and I’m definitely not wasting my time reading his confessions. I feel a bit mean but I tell myself that I’ll help saemi out and maybe talk to Giovan to set things straight. He needs to know that I’m not interested and that he should stop wasting time because someone else likes him. I’m still holding the letter almost about to open it but I stop and give it back to saemi. “You do know I’m not attracted to him in the slightest- right?” Saemis eyebrows raise and she stammers a “yeahh I knew that,” trying to hide her surprise. “Oh saemi you’re such a good friend,” I smile at her. Even when she’s been crushing on that dude for like forever! she still doesn’t let jealousy or envy get to her and does the right thing. “Here you keep this for memories and tell me what he wrote in that letter whenever you feel like it”.
