Prologue
"Sign the divorce papers!" Carter buttoned his shirt in front of the mirror as he yelled. With tears streaming down her cheeks, Kelsea clung to the sheets in an attempt to cover her body. Her skin crawled from the cold air conditioning, pricking her bare n*****s. For her, it was undoubtedly the most enjoyable night of her life. But why is he acting as if nothing had happened? It was as if the man she loved and had married a year ago hadn't made love to her until he got tired. And now he was urging her to sign the divorce paper. "Since when? Tell me why you detest me, Carter. Give me a reason." She said, which made him look at her fiercely. Did she not see why I detested her so intensely? Was she unaware of the harm she had done to me? he thought. With a mocking glance, he muttered, "Don't act as a victim. You know perfectly well why I hate you." Kelsea cried. No, she didn't understand why he hated her so much considering that she had been his ideal woman—submissive, content, and obedient—or was that the reason? Is it possible that Carter felt resentment toward women who submitted to his authority? Since Carter Smith was the most vicious guy to have ever lived, Kelsea wanted to know what she had done wrong. But at this point, she couldn't think of anything but to love him sincerely, so she replied incoherently, "I... I love you." But Carter gave her a wry smile before grabbing her by the arm and murmuring, "But I don't. Look at you," then he positioned her in front of the mirror. "Who could love a monster like you?" Kelsea's heart seemed to be crumbling, and she thought that she should have followed her grandfather's advice and never married him. She was mistaken in her belief that she would succeed in making him fall in love with her. Abruptly, she said, "I... I thought you liked me." "I have no affection for you and never will; you merely amused the woman whom I truly adore, and that is Kacey." "My sister? Why? Since we're identical, why don't you like me?" "Is it because she doesn't have a burnt face like you do? Or the fact that, unlike you, she is a respectable, kind woman?" He answered, yelling. Kelsea was upset by those remarks since she was tired of asking him for love. Throughout their year-long marriage, all he had done was cause her pain, and she had always supported him, believing that one day he would come to his senses and understand how wrong he had been. However, when she looks at him and sees how much he hates her, she realizes that Carter Smith will never be able to love her in return. Walking, she dragged the sheets under Carter's disbelieving gaze, who was now unable to comprehend that the woman she married and said loved him had grown weary of him as she continued, "I will set you free, and I hope you never regret this." She then quickly signed the documents after taking them from the table. She went to her room, half-naked and with her heart in her mouth, and sobbed as she put on her clothes, talking to herself, "You should've known that this would be the last humiliation I would ever do to you." She couldn't help but think back on the evening she'd spent with him as she stared in the mirror. Because of his intense love and devotion, Kelsea thought their marriage might have a chance. "He probably felt that way about me because I resembled Kacey; that's why he expressed such affection for me." She thought. With a sorrowful smile, she studied her face, marked by the scar his sister had left on her when she was a little girl. You are a monster who will take revenge on all those who have wronged you. She grabbed the luggage and went down the stairs, only to be heartbroken and end up destroying her again when she saw Carter on the couch with Kacey on his lap, kissing him on his neck as her legs wrapped around his waist. "You anticipated this," she murmured, balling her fists. "So what?" Kacey said, smirking, "We all know that I am the woman Carter loves." She continued. Carter suddenly felt hurt for Kelsea for reasons he didn't know. Why was it painful for him to watch her leave when he was the one who wanted it? "Kelsea!" Carter shouted, and she already felt that she wouldn’t like what would happen next, but she still looked back. "Make sure that none of your things will be left behind," he said, hurling the dress he had removed from her the previous evening on her face. With hate in her eyes, Kelsea made a promise to herself. "They are going to pay for all the pain they have done to me." Dragging her bag, she left the estate and entered the car her grandfather had bought her for her birthday. For hours, she drove without direction until an idea dawned on her. .. Carter shoved Kacey out of his arms. He didn’t understand why he couldn't get Kelsea out of his head, even though he thought he was the man who took Kacey’s virginity and even thought that he loved her. He grabbed the bottle and guzzled it all at once. "Go away, Kacey, leave me alone!" He yelled exasperatedly. "But, honey, the most sensible thing is for me to come live with you now that that bad woman has gone," she replied sweetly. "Yes, do it, but not today; I want to be alone," he responded. With a frustrated expression on her face, Kacey claimed that Carter had fallen in love with his foolish younger sister after all. She kissed him on the lips and murmured, "Don't drink too much, love," to which Carter nodded. He watched her go, and then, drunk, he strolled to the shelf, unlocked the safe, and took his brother's picture. With tears streaming down his cheeks, he continued, "I don't owe you anything; I managed to avenge your death." With the whiskey bottle in his hands, he walked toward the sofa after taking the picture. He switched on the TV, and the news made his heart tighten. “On the main road, Mrs. Kelsea Smith's burning car was discovered. They found a burned woman inside the vehicle. While the authorities are still investigating, it is apparent from the victim's things that she is the businessman Carter Smith's wife,” said the news.
