Chapter One
"BEEP BEEP" The sound of a car honking snapped me out of my daydreaming. Apparently, the red light had turned green during my distraction and I stepped on the gas pedal quickly, making me jerk forward. "b***h!" A lady yelled at me as she zoomed pass my black Mazda with her tacky yellow Volkswagen Beetle. Oh, I need a reminder of how I exactly passed my driver’s test. The wind made my dark brown hair flap against my cheeks. I plugged in my iPod and The Story of Us by Taylor Swift came on, mildly surprising myself that such an old song decided to play. "I used to think.... we’d tell the story of us..." I mumbled along to catchy tune as I cruised along. Moments later, I arrived at Jake's house and turned off the engine. I decided to give him a little surprise visit. After all, a girl has to be sufficed by her man over chick flicks and possibly some back rubs. I hobbled up the porch steps, feeling at ease with the familiar routine. I automatically reached for the doorbell, but my finger hung a few inches away from the circular button as I watched a sight unfold before me in the house, through the window. My throat instantly closed up as I felt hot tears prickling at my eyes. My vision blurred from the sudden rush of unshed tears but that didn't stop me from seeing the one thing that seemed to make the world stop. Everything slowed down as I could only focus on the scene playing right before my eyes. The two people leaned apart, after what seemed like a millennium, to catch some air. A tightening squeezed in my chest and I gasped rapidly, not realizing that I was holding my breath. Like a song on a music player, the world was propelled back into rotation with my hand rapping thunderously against the door. What am I doing? After I heard shuffling in the house and clobbered running, the door opened revealing a disheveled Jake. "Baby, hey!" He gave a nervous laugh and scratched the back of his head and asked, "w-what are you doing here? Did something happen?" His eyebrows furrowed in worry and he stepped forward to wipe a rogue tear off of my cheek. My body recognizes his touch and relaxes, making me want to believe that I hallucinated what had played out. A breeze whipped around the porch and the cooled tears on my face reminded me that it was the reality. My feet stayed planted as my brain conjured up the million ways I could reply with. His eyes searched mine, urging me to speak as the growing silence grew uncomfortable. Rather than my voice taking over, my hand met his cheek making him stumble back from shock. This time when he looked back at me, it wasn't with confusion. He knew. "I can explain." He pleaded. I didn't know whether to laugh or scream at the typical statement. No blame could be put on him though, I mean, what else does someone say when they're caught cheating? A scene from Bring It On played in my head when Torrance caught Aaron with another girl, and I reprimanded myself for thinking of the movie instead of focusing on the backstabbing boyfriend in front of me. "Alright," I croaked. His wild eyes ran around furiously as he tried to muster up an explanation. A statement. A word; anything. But he said nothing. "Yeah that's what I thought," I said weakly. My feet came to life again and propelled myself towards my car. When my car engine came on, it was as if that jump started him back to consciousness and he ran from his house. "Amber! Wait!" His muffled voice was barely heard over the Taylor Swift song that continued playing. My body went into muscle memory as I made my home the destination, his body becoming smaller in the rear-view mirror. For once, I agreed with Taylor Swift. It's definitely the end for us.
