Ariel’s P.O.V.
“You know very well that the person who defeats the alpha of a pack has to take over the alpha position. You defeated him. Now you are our alpha,” Asher tried to persuade me again, making me groan in frustration now. “I defeated him because he is not a good warrior. Despite the fact that he is an alpha and my father, he is weaker than me. I defeated him because I wanted to free my mother. I have no intention to take over the alpha position. Have you ever heard of a human being alpha of a pack?” I tried to explain my reason for fighting my father the last time while mocking myself in the end.
“Things are not that simple, Ariel. You are not getting my point. If you don’t take over then as the next kin, Sapphire will take over, and she is worse than Alpha Albert,” he said and I raised my brows. Leaving the pack in Sapphire’s hand could be the doom of the pack. “Moreover, Alpha Killian is going to be here soon. Any of his warriors alone is capable enough to defeat Sapphire, and you know what will happen to our pack then,” he replied to me in a worried tone, and I pursed my lips into a thin line.
I felt a headache coming my way as I didn’t think about the consequences of defeating my father. The whole pack was now without an alpha, and despite of being a human and I couldn’t ruin so many lives just because of the hatred that I had towards my father. Asher was a good beta but he was not an alpha material. I couldn’t trust the pack in his hands. Sapphire was already a big no for me. “Give me some time, and I will find a way,” I answered him, and he sighed in defeat. It was not that easy to convince me for something that I didn’t want to do. Accepting the alpha title meant living with them here, and this was not my intention at all.
I stood up from the chair and then walked out of the alpha’s office where Asher and I were having a meeting about the alpha position. Everyone who met me during my way to the living room of the pack house bowed respectfully, which made me raise my brows in amusement. All the elders closed their eyes when I was bullied by the younger ones back then. Just because I was a human among the wolves, I was the subject of bullying and mockery. At that time, I had seen all kinds of expressions in their eyes, but not respect. I didn’t think that a day like this would come. My father was now lying on a bed in the pack hospital because of the brutal injuries I had inflicted on him.
Without giving any response to them, and marched straight to Ruby’s room. I was shocked to know that Ruby was living separately from my father for the last three years after she discovered the he was cheating on her. She endured the pain of betrayal so many times in these three years. That was also a reason that I showed no mercy to my father during the combat. He betrayed my mother first by bringing Ruby, but that was fate. What he had been during in the past three years was not fate but his selfishness.
I was about to knock on her door when she asked me to come inside. I entered the room, and saw her lying on the bed. She was looking pale, but calm. That pathetic excuse of my father had injected her with wolfsbane to keep her wolf asleep. “How are you feeling now?” I asked her in a concerned tone, and she smiled weakly while sitting up. I ran to her and helped her in getting up.
“Much better, Ariel, but you shouldn’t have come back. You should have listened to me,” she said in a worried tone, and I sighed. “You know very well that you are my only weakness, Ruby,” I whispered, and she leaned on my shoulder. I heard a faint sniff, and it was enough for me to wrap my hands around her torso, and she snuggled into me while wrapping her hands around my waist.
“You don’t know much about Alpha Killian, Ariel. He is obsessed with power, and there is no limit to his greed for power,” she continued, and I frowned. What did it to do with me? “He is still unmated at the age of 29, and there is a very thin chance that he will meet his fated mate now,” she said further, and I huffed internally. “Why do I care about whether he gets a mate or not?” I asked her, and she sniffed again. She slowly raised her face from my shoulder and looked at me.
I saw pain, and fear in her tearful eyes. “Why can’t you see what trouble you are in, Ariel?” she scolded me in a cracked tone, leaving me utterly confused. “He wants to take over this pack, and because of this, he was about to challenge your father in a few days. His warriors have already taken over half of the duties of the pack. Your father betrayed him by fixing your marriage with his rival. I am sure that he has already gotten the news of what happened here earlier. Now, you are the alpha of this pack, and this means, you have to fight with him. Do you think that you can survive in front of him, huh?” she explained, and also why she was worried.
I slapped myself mentally. How stupid I could be? I could defeat my father, but Alpha Killian was the fiercest warrior. He was also known for his combat skills. Fighting with him meant practically walking in the mouth of death on my own. It was nothing but suicide. “Still I can’t leave you when you are in dire need of me,” I answered her stubbornly, and her grip on me tightened immediately. “Why aren’t you my daughter, Ariel? You should have been born from me,” she said in whispers, making me smile this time.
“Let me think about dealing with Alpha Killian, Ruby. I will try to negotiate with him over the pack takeover. He is ruthless, but a good ruler. If I see no problem in handing over the pack to him, I will hand over the pack to him without any hesitation, or else, I will not hesitate to give him a fight with all my strength,” I said to Ruby after some time. “I…. I don’t th.. think that y..you will be able to face him, Ariel,” she said while stuttering a little, making me narrow my eyes in confusion. “What do you mean?” I asked her, and she leaned on me again.
“You will see,” she whispered in a broken voice, making me frown again. “Let me stay with you like this for a while. I am sorry, Ariel. I failed you as a mother, and put your life in danger,” she whispered, and I sighed aloud this time. I didn’t say any other word, and let her rest on my shoulder. Although she was in her early forties, she had aged a lot, indicating my father's negligence, and abuse. I just hated my father so much for torturing both the important women in my life.
Suddenly she jolted away from me and looked at me with a fearful gaze. “What happened?” I asked her while cupping her face. “He has come,” she uttered in a fearful tone, and I smiled lightly again. “Let’s face this together, Ruby,” I said and tears started streaming down from her eyes. “You have to stay stronger in front of him, Ariel…. I… I don’t know… how to say b… but… you can do this… I … I know th.. that you can do this,” she continued in the same fearful tone, leaving me completely confused.
Suddenly, I heard a knock on the door. I looked in the direction of the door, and saw Asher coming inside. He had a cold face right now. “Alpha Killian demands your presence in the living room, Ariel,” he told me, and I nodded in response. I looked back at Ruby, who was now looking at me with a worried expression. I could understand her fear. Facing a ruthless alpha like Killian when you are nothing but a human is just a death wish.
“Let’s go,” I said to Ruby while smiling lightly. She nodded but didn’t leave my hand. She was holding my hand so tightly that I frowned in pain this time. She was still a werewolf, and I was no match for her strength because of her being a Luna.
She held my hand tightly as if someone was going to snatch me away from her. I couldn’t understand her fear though. It was not like Alpha Killian would pounce on me, and strangle me to death as soon as I reach there. Still, I didn’t say anything to her and held her hand gently giving me her assurance that everything would be okay. It was already 9 in the night, and I was really annoyed by this meeting. He could have this meeting in the morning but it seemed that Alpha Killian was in a hurry to take over this pack. Now I was curious to know his reasons. I knew the whole geography of the pack land, and there was nothing here that could be counted as precious or tempting.
I felt heavy pressure in the atmosphere due to the presence of a powerful being. I was a human, but still, I felt that pressure. With my head high, I confidently walked inside the living room with Ruby beside me. The first thing that came into my line of sight was a broad back of a man. He had his back towards me. He had a towering height of approx. six feet or might be three inches with broad shoulders with a strong body. I could say that the man was obsessed with workouts too.
Asher was standing a little far away from them with Sapphire who was now looking at me with disdain and pure hatred. I didn’t pay any attention to her, and looked at the person standing in front of me again. Another burly man, I guess, his beta was standing facing me. I could see curiosity in his eyes as if he was trying to figure out me. “Good evening, Alpha Killian,” I greeted him in a confident tone, but kept my tone respectful. He slowly moved towards me.
I gasped in shock and my eyes almost bulged out in horror. How could it be? His eyes were icy cold, cold enough to freeze anyone. I felt a tug on my hand, but my heart was now racing a marathon inside my chest. Unconsciously, I started walking towards him in a daze, still having my eyes widened. Was he really back, or was this my imagination? The tears were now streaming down like a fall. I wanted to believe that he was back, but my conscious mind was now playing games with me.
His eyes narrowed, and the coldness was replaced by curiosity. I wanted to scream his name but my throat was completely clogged. I felt suffocated. I wanted to breathe but it was almost an impossible task for me now. I slowly raised my hand, still looking straight into his eyes. There was no warmth, and love in his eyes as I was used to seeing. I cupped his face, and tried to assure myself that he was really back…. Back from death. My head started spinning hard, and before I could utter a single word, I fainted.
