Corrine’s face fell. She stopped posturing at me and looked like she had been slapped. I straightened up and looked down at her with all the disdain I had for her since Carmen told me about everything that happened. She may not have hit Carmen, but she did stand there and let it happen.

She wasn’t crying now. Her hands went up and clasped over her heart, as if she was trying to hold it together. Carmen stepped out from behind me and held my hand.

“Look at me, Mother. I’m happy. I’m with the person who loves me most in the world. All you see is a troll and a blind girl. You don’t see a woman and her true mate.
