“I don’t know why she did this, Ms Ranger. I am sure that she must have her own reasons for doing this”, I said in a cold tone to Mariam’s cousin who came here to meet me. “You think so highly of her, Mr Davenport and don’t know her true face. She …. She is not what you see. She always has this pitiful appearance only to fool others. This is just a small piece of property that doesn’t have a big value but for me…. This is something. She knows very well that I am not as financially strong as her family is. Still….. (she made a crying face)… still she wants to divide this property”, her voice cracked in the end. I knew what she was trying to implement here. Dexter got a call from her two days ago that she wanted to meet me and this was very urgent. She said that it was related to Mariam and that was the only reason that I agreed to meet her and now I was regretting my decision now.

“Ms Ranger… I don’t know why you are trying to paint her as evil here”, I looked at Valerie, who was stunned by my bluntness now. “If I am not wrong then your grandparents have divided this piece of property between you two because you two are the only heirs, right?” I paused and looked at her coldly. She gulped down hard but nodded. “So what’s wrong with her claim here?” I asked her in a casual tone while crossing my legs. “My grandparents included her after her father’s death. They only wanted to secure her future as her mother is still a housewife. She is now doing well and also as you”, she gestured towards me, which made me raise my brows at her. “As you, her husband… I don’t think that she should claim this property. She should leave”, she said, trying to act calm. I scoffed while looking away for a second and then looked back at her again. My gaze was still cold.

“If my information is right, then your grandmother died two years ago. That time, Mariam had already earned name and fame. Still, your grandmother didn’t revise her will and kept things like that. Then why on earth are you hell-bound to make Mariam an evil person here?” I was now irritated with her, which made me use a bit higher tone this time. “This piece of property has a total worth of around 250 million dollars. If this is split between you two, then each of you will get 125 million, which you can’t consider a small amount. You want Mariam to leave her inheritance just because she is married to me?” I once again asked her another question.

 “I… I … am not trying t…..to badmouth Mariam, Mr Davenport… I.. I only”, I immediately raised my hand in the air to stop her. “For your knowledge, Ms Ranger…. It’s me who told Mariam about those kidnappers and it was me who found them and made them confess who paid them. I just pulled some strings to get the names of the real culprits who are still free”, I said in a cold voice while glaring at her. Her eyes immediately widened in shock. She didn’t blink for a few seconds. Her face went pale because of my revelation. “If you are still sitting here it doesn’t mean that I can’t touch you. It means that Mariam doesn’t want to harm you”, I said once again in a cold voice. “So …. Don’t pretend to be innocent because I know the mastermind behind that k********g very well”, I said in a cold voice filled with disdain.

She didn’t speak for a while just stare at me with wide-open eyes. It seemed that she would faint any time. She knew what I am and what I could do. “Enjoy your free life for a while, Ms Ranger and don’t try to mess things for yourself”, I threatened her this time. “I…. it’s… it’s n… not… me…W…. W… Warr…ick.. w..ant..ed to k…ill her”, she stuttered hard while trying to defend herself. I banged the table making her scream in fear and stood up. My face was already ugly due to those scars and now it had become scary due to the anger that was now emitting from my body. “Go away, Ms Ranger, before I do something that you will regret later”, I roared at her this time. She immediately stood up and ran out of the room as if someone was chasing her.

I was now breathing harshly. I closed my eyes while balling up my fists. That girl didn’t know when to stop. She still had the audacity to put the blame on Warrick when she clearly knew that she was the one who pestered him to join her in that scheme. They were cheating on Mariam behind her back but Warrick was wise enough to know what was better for him. Their plan was to kill Mariam first and then Warrick only needed to claim everything that was on Mariam’s name as her fiancée. Her mother also considered him as her son and it wouldn’t be difficult for him to convince her that he would take care of her for the rest of her life. After he gets everything, then they will think about her mother's fate. It was their bad luck that I saved Mariam and failed their plan.

I sat down on the chair again and leaned back. I rested my head on the top of the backrest and closed my eyes again. I was already upset for Mariam. She was supposed to be on her feet but now she was paralyzed because I wanted to save my sister. Mariam was a pure soul and blamed her fate for her condition but I was not that like her. She had already accepted my family and now it was my turn to show my sincerity in this relationship. I opened my eyes when I heard a knock on the door. I recomposed myself and asked the person to come inside. Dexter came inside and stood up near the table.

“What is it?” I asked him in a calm tone this time. “Someone has contacted Warrick. This is about the accident”, he said in a stiff tone. I knitted my brows while looking at him. “Warrick is trying to contact Mariam for the past five days. Mike informed me that he went to meet someone in a secluded area a few days ago”, he put down a pen drive on the table in front of me. “This is what Mike recorded”, he informed me and I nodded. “Have you seen?” I asked him and he nodded. “Did you get anything useful?” I asked him and he took a deep breath and didn’t say a word for a while. It made me curious too. “Whoever has contacted him is from or related to your family, sir”, he said that made me shake my head while lowering my head. I knew it and now I only needed to find out the main culprit and then no one would save him from my wrath.

“I want to ask you something, sir”, he suddenly spoke in a low voice and I looked up. “Why did you spare that doctor, sir?” he asked me in a low voice. I knew that he would ask me sooner or later because he was also upset when he came to know what happened to Mariam. “At first it was a secret operation and second, Mariam didn’t want me to take any action because that doctor is also responsible for Rehaana and she was happy that he managed to save her”, I told him truthfully but in a flat voice. I didn’t know why Mariam was so soft-hearted and easily forgave those who did wrong to her. Only Warrick and Valerie were exceptions here. He scoffed and lowered his voice. “She can’t change”, he muttered and this time a small smile occurred on my lips. “Will she stand up again?” he asked after a few seconds in a worried tone.

I took a deep breath and blew the breath through my mouth. “I don’t know, Dexter”, I answered him truthfully and there was silence in the room for a good few minutes. “Ask Mike not to let them go away from his gaze even for a second. Warrick is in dire need of money to save his business and he will do anything for this. Try to find out why he is trying to contact Mariam too”, I instructed him breaking the silence. “Yes, Sir”, he said and then bowed his head a little before going out of the room. I could say that he was upset and worried for Mariam as well. He might have a poker face but he couldn’t hide his emotions flowing in his eyes. He had taken care of Mariam just like a father who takes care of his newly born daughter. Apart from me, it was only Dexter who could change her bandages and could help her with other personal things. I had seen him scolding her in a fatherly tone while feeding her whenever she threw tantrums. He was the only one here with whom I could trust her safety.

I took the pen drive from the table and chewed my inner cheeks while thinking deeply. I attached the drive to the laptop. I narrowed my eyes when I saw a long silhouette coming out of the darkness of that alley but didn’t come completely in front of the light. He had disguised himself completely and it was impossible to get his identity because he had completely covered himself and also had a long hat on his head. I paused the video when he was passing a briefcase to Warrick. The lines on my forehead straightened up when I noticed something in the video. My jaws clenched in anger and I balled up my fists. I played the video again and watched the whole content with concentration. The corner of my lips curled up when I noticed something again. It was going to be fun now.

I picked up the phone when the video ended. There were two more videos but I decided to watch them later. I dialled a number and waited for the person to pick up the call. "I am sending you a video for your consideration. This is about the person who tried to kill Mariam and her mother", I informed him while attaching the video to the email that I was going to send him. "The person in disguise is the real culprit", I said again when he asked me why he needed to see the video. "Watch the video first and then call me", I said to him cutting him in the middle of his sentence as I was not in a mood of hearing his tantrums too. He hung up without listening to his response and also hit the send button. I then started the next video. I furrowed my brows when I saw that same man going inside Mariam's home. I immediately called Dexter inside my office while watching the video. Mike was best in his work. He tried to get the clear shots while shooting that video. He didn't expose himself and also didn't let that man be suspicious about someone following him. I watched him searching Mariam's house for something. He also banged his hand on the table or shelf where he was standing while searching the whole house. Now I needed to know what he was looking at there. Suddenly, my phone started ringing and I paused the video. I smirked when I saw the caller ID.
