Chapter 10: Findings

Early in the morning Yuri and Chris went to the warehouse area in the Pulogadung industrial complex to conduct an operational audit.   They did check in warehouse A regarding the compliance of storing finished goods according to procedures. They also checked the number of finished goods in the data in accordance with the physical evidence in the warehouse.   The goods placed in warehouse A were snack products that have a 3-year expiry period.   Yuri suddenly remembered some Rosalia stories that the warehouse area was an area prone to fraud. Often cases of undetected theft happened. Sometimes the data on the computer was different from physical evidence in the field, and because warehouse staff often rotated because of shifts, it was difficult to track missing items.   Yuri looked around and realized something was not right. Among the boxes stacked in a row, Yuri found that there was very little difference in design on several shelves in one corner.   "Chris, this is only my opinion, but the writing on this cardboard seems a little smaller than the other boxes. The font type is a little different. Here, specifically here," Yuri said, pointing to the box.   "I don't see any difference with the font, Yuri. Maybe this design is intentionally distinguished for other countries or there are indeed printing errors. Naturally, sometimes there are differences in cardboard printing. Moreover, this is only a slight error in the cardboard, not in product packaging. So, it's not a big problem," said Chris.   "Okay, so things like this don't become findings then," Yuri murmured.   She walked around once more to be sure. Her eyes then saw on the lower shelf inside that there were a few boxes that were slightly open.   "Chris, these boxes should be sealed, right?" Yuri asked.   "Yes, it should be tightly sealed because this is the area of finished goods. They only need to take goods from the shelves to be distributed to stores. Why Yuri?" Chris asked in surprise.   "I saw a box that might not seal tightly. Chris, is the open box can be counted as findings?" Yuri asked.   Chris approached Yuri. "Could it be rats? But usually, there is always pest control that is done regularly. We must note these findings if any. Maybe they are negligent. Which one?"   "That one," Yuri said, pointing.   Chris looked at the cardboard box located inside the shelf. The seal was open because some of the cardboard was sticking up. He had never seen this before. Was this the first time this had happened or had he been paying less attention so far?   "Mm ... this is strange. The Box of finished goods should be tightly sealed. If it is exposed and its contents are reduced or contaminated with insects, then when customers found it, then it can be a big issue and have a bad impact on company credibility," Chris said, frowning.   "Then, what should we do now?" Yuri asked as she noted her findings.   "I'll call the warehouse staff to take the cardboard off the shelf and check the contents. The contents may be damaged already," said Chris.   Chris then approached the warehouse staff and asked to check. The warehouse supervisor fulfilled Chris's request.   The warehouse supervisor immediately asked his team to move the boxes on the bottom shelf using a forklift and put them in a special area for further investigation. While there were officers who record the cardboard code number to be checked and matched with data.   "There is something wrong! This cardboard weight seems too light," said one warehouse officer when trying to shift a few boxes in the checking area.   The warehouse supervisor tried to lift one of the boxes. His face paled.   "You are right. This box is too light. Something's not right," complained the warehouse supervisor.   "Try checking the box with the seal slightly open," Chan ordered.   The warehouse clerk opened it and was shocked when he saw its contents.   "Empty! This box is empty! "   "This box is empty too!" another officer shouted.   The warehouse supervisor immediately approached his team with a pale face.   "Jeez! Who dares to steal in our warehouse? I'm dead! We could all be fired!" sighed the warehouse supervisor with a pale face as a ghost.   "Try opening this other sealed box. You say this box is lighter than it should be. Maybe these boxes are empty!" exclaimed Chris worried.   "B ... but ... to break the seal, we are not authorized to do that!" said the warehouse supervisor, scared.   "Let me take responsibility! Open the seal!" Chris ordered coldly.   "Fine, I'll prepare the necessary documents. Please sign this document first, so we don't get the wrong steps,” said the warehouse supervisor preparing the document to be signed by Chris.   The warehouse supervisor ordered his team to break the cardboard seal. They found all the boxes empty.   "I’m done! We are all dead! Who dares to steal in this warehouse? WHO???" the Warehouse Supervisor shouted frantically.   "Sir ... definitely not us, boss! Believe me!" exclaimed one of the warehouse supervisor's men in fear.   The warehouse team's body was trembling with fear. They were afraid of losing their jobs. They really cheated by cunning thieves!   "Chris, I think we need to check all the boxes that have different designs. I can show you which shelves have suspicious boxes. I'm afraid the contents of this box are all empty," Yuri said.   "I agree. Your observational power is great Yuri. Even though this is your second day working here but you do an excellent job. But to open that many boxes seems like I need help from Mr. Hans. First, we must report getting approval," said Chris firmly.   "Yes, and we should do it now. If we leave this place, maybe the boxes will disappear or change positions. We never know," said Yuri.   "Yes, this is a big finding. This is clearly a theft case. This is a fraud. We need to calculate the total losses incurred and trace the occurrence's beginning of empty boxes like this," said Chris.   "Chris, is it possible for something like this to be done by only one person?"   "No, the thieves are definitely more than one person. First of all, they can trick people with similar boxes. There may be several people involved. The warehouse people, the driver, and the security department all need to be inspected," Chris said with a tense face.   "Are these big findings?" Yuri asked.   "Yes, this is a big finding. The boss has sent a joint team to come immediately and investigate today. We need to wait until they arrive. No one can touch an item at the crime scene," Chris said firmly.   "I didn't think my first assignment would be such a big find," Yuri said softly. She did not want to attract the attention of many people, but this case seemed to be a great achievement soon.   The joint investigation team arrived a few hours later. After approval of further investigations, they managed to find at least 10,000 empty boxes. Total losses due to empty boxes reached USD 120,000.   Almost midnight, Yuri arrived back at her house. Chris asked the official car driver to drive Yuri home.   "Good job, Yuri. It seems like you are suitable for working in an internal audit," Chris said with a proud smile.   "Thank you, Chris. This achievement happened because I collaborated with you. If I do it alone, surely I do not know what to do," said Yuri.   "Please take a good rest. Tomorrow we will go to the office for a while before going to the field again. We need to trace the data of incoming and outgoing goods further. We have to know the beginning of this fraud," Chris said with sparkling eyes.   "Okay, I'll help you tomorrow," Yuri said, pleased to win Chris’s trust.   Chris's action at the warehouse was truly amazing and cool in Yuri's eyes. She began to admire the greatness of Chris as a capable internal auditor in the field.   On the contrary, Chris felt fortunate to meet Yuri, who had sharp observations. Achievements of this magnitude would certainly help him accelerate his job promotion.
