Meeting the King II

The people inside the hall are listening to Clyde’s very carefully. They are curious and at the same time, thinking about whether this story is made up or not.

“At that moment, I saw a beautiful figure and she said to me that the darkness is approaching. I didn’t understand what she is saying but then she tells me that I need to be prepared for it since the world needed hope. She also tells me that I need to go to the Darkwood mountain range and pull out a sword that has been stuck on the stone. I told my dream to my parents and they relay it to the village’s head. After that, the village’s head decided to send a couple of villagers to accompany me to the location of the sword and I actually succeeded in pulling the swords out.”

After that, Clyde once again retold the king about the story of the village that is being attacked by the monster and their journey from the village to the city.

“You said that you pulled out the sword, can I see it?”

“Your majesty.”

There’re a couple of guards inside the hall but the king waved his hand, signaling to them that it was okay.

Clyde stepped forward and then with both hands, he presented the holy sword, Caliburn with both hands towards the king. Elmer is the one who took it from Clyde’s hand and then he brought it closer to the king. The king examined it for a bit before nodded to Elmer which returned the sword back to Clyde.

“Elmer said that he has witnessed your ability before, can you show it to us?”

Clyde was a bit surprised but seeing Elmer nodded, he feels relieved and immediately some guards are bringing a training dummy and place it in front of Clyde. For this one, since the holy sword Caliburn couldn’t be used and Clyde only bringing one sword inside the castle, Elmer actually lent his sword to Clyde.

Once again, Clyde is showing his ability to control mana as the sword is perfectly enveloped by warm lights. He slashed the training dummy and a clean burnt cut wound can be seen. After seeing that demonstration, the crown prince who is standing beside the king actually clapped out loud.

“Magnificent, that attack is very clean and the control of mana is perfect. If I didn’t know that you are just a normal villager before, I will mistake you as a descendant of a noble knight family that has been training since small.”

The high appraisal from the crown prince isn’t exaggerated at all. After all, that’s why Elmer was a bit bitter and envious when he sparred with Clyde before. Clyde was a bit embarrassed when he heard that as he rarely gets praised by the villager before.

“Royal father, after seeing with my own eyes, I am now convinced that he is indeed the hero that has been prophesied by the seer.”

When the crown prince said that, the king and the queen nodded in unison. It seemed that they have been convinced too. Seeing that Clyde is the only one who is confused, Elmer stepped forward to explain it to him.

“The kingdom’s seer once makes a prophecy. She said that the world will soon experience turmoil and great chaos. When it happened, it will be the sign that the demon king will once again show up after the position has been empty for hundreds of years. When it happens, the hero will appear. Leading humanity and other races that have been oppressed by the demons. With the sword that has been stuck on the rock for countless years.”

Even though Clyde is the one who personally experienced the dreams when he is visited by the goddess, he still didn’t believe it himself. After all, how could a villager boy like him become a hero that will lead humanity? But now, hearing the prophecy of the seer, he feels goosebump running all over his body. Is it really his destiny?

His way of thinking has been changing slowly too as he experienced the first battle with the monsters and his success in killing the ogre. He feels that he seemed to awaken a part of his soul that is familiar yet stranger at the same time. However, he didn’t hate the feeling at all.

“Elmer, what do you think?”

“Your majesty, although Clyde couldn’t use the holy sword Caliburn right now, it is only a matter of time before he is able to wield it freely on the battlefield. Just from the skill that he shows us, and hearing that he only picks up the sword for the first time three weeks ago, it is impossible for him to show the level of his ability without talents. Not only that he is talented, but the most important thing that we need to believe is also that he is a chosen individual. Someone who is chosen by God and received their blessings.”

Hearing Elmer’s explanation, once again the queen nodded in agreement but the king keeps his silence for a bit. Everyone in the room also is waiting for the king's decision.

“I’ve made my decision. Since Elmer appraised Clyde quite highly and believe in his potential. How about we let him train with Elmer as the teacher. We will have him trained for one month and see how much he improved in that span of time. We will make a new decision based on the growth of his ability whether it is exceeding our expectations or not. Clyde, we hope that you will be able to surprise us.”

Hearing the king's decision to stall for time, no one refuted or feel displeased. Everyone feels that it was a natural thing to do since although the hero Clyde is fulfilling the criteria of the prophecy, they shouldn’t blindly believe in it and jump on the ship. There is still a need to evaluate his growth and whether it is trustable to leave the future of humanity in his hand.

Throughout history, there’re a lot of heroes that succumb to temptation and misused their power as heroes and causing more damage than the demon king instead. When that happened, the heroes are defeated after many hardships and a new hero will appear soon after. That is why the king feels that there is a need to evaluate Clyde for some more before deciding.
