Chapter 6 : Changed Heart

1964 Kata
I turned fully to face the man in the shadows. I clutched the ironing board behind me trying to conceal the scissors I had just used to vandalize the Alpha's clothes. “Who are you?" I demanded with a shaky voice. Never in my life had my voice shook when I spoke to someone. I had always been the one in the position of authority. The man stepped out of the shadows with his hands held up. I let out a low gasp at the sight of his eyes. They were the bluest pair of eyes I had ever seen in my entire life. They reminded me of the afternoon sky when the day was clear and there were no clouds in sight. “Who are you?" I asked again but this time with more assertion. “I'm not going to hurt you." I scoffed. “Funny you should say that. You're one of them." His eyebrows pulled together in confusion. “One of who?" I stared into his eyes. They were so hypnotic. He was not like what many of the men in this pack were like. He was much thinner than the rest of the men in the pack. He didn't have as much meat on his bones. He didn't even look like he could fight. “Who are you?" This time I stood taller. He was no threat to me. I could stand my own ground comfortably. “My name is Vincent." He slowly lowered his arms. “And you are, angel?" He was staring at me like he was looking at a marvel of this world. It was a little intrusive and weird. “Why are you calling me angel?" He had called me that before as well. I didn't like it. “You look like one. I have never seen someone quite as beautiful as you." Was he joking? “I didn't mean to scare you. I was just a little alarmed when you started cutting up the Alphas' clothes. The man does not take kindly to people vandalizing his property." My anger flared again. “Do you think I care what he likes and does not like? Your Alpha is the bane of my very existence." Vincent looked slightly taken aback by my words. “I don't understand." “Of course you don't. You likely worship the ground he walks on. I am nothing but a mere peasant. That is what he has made me now." The noose around my heart tightened. The air heated in my lungs as I huffed out in anger. How dare he do this to me? After all my family has done for him. Not to mention the lies he told. I believed him. My father believed him. At the thought of my father, I felt the tears sting behind my eyes. How could a heart be broken and still beat the way mine did? I had lost everything. My family, my home, my life. It was all gone in the blink of an eye and the man responsible for all of this had taken me hostage and condemned me to the life of a slave. He had rejected me. Why did he keep me alive? It would have been a mercy to kill me. At least then I could find solace in the arms of the divine goddess. Instead, here I stood in the washroom with another Omega when I should be leading my pack. “I don't know what happened to you, angel, but I—" “Don't call me that," I snapped, “I am not your angel." Vincent held his hands up. “Okay, okay, I won't call you that anymore. But would you mind telling me your real name?" I turned my nose up at him. “And why would I do that?" “So that I can call you by your name." He offered me a small smile. “I think we could be good friends." I scoffed. Him and I friends? There was no way on this green earth would I ever be friends with him. I was no Omega. I was above him. I could not associate with those below my rank. It was not the way that things were done. Alphas didn't associate with those below the beta ranking. “You are like all the bloodthirsty murderers in this pack." “I am no murderer." Vincent placed his hand over his heart. “I can't even kill a chicken. I don't spill blood." “Your people killed my pack." “We didn't kill anyone, I know many of the packs believe us to be evil killers but you have it all wrong. We are not killers." “So then who murdered my people? Who butchered my pack? Blood was spilled and it is all your Alphas fault. He was behind enemy lines so he could get to us from the inside. He killed my family and my pack and I want his head on a f*cking platter." His eyes widened. Vincent opened his mouth to say something but he shut it when the door to the ironing room flung open and in walked these guards dressed in all black. They wore scowls on their faces as they looked at me and Vincent. Then their eyes shifted to the clothes and the scissors beside me. A slow evil grin overtook one of the guards faces. “Well, well, well," he stepped forward. His eyes were glued on me and his arms behind his back. I didn't like the way he was looking at me. He leered toward me like a predator to his prey. “What do we have here? The jilted mate of the Alpha." I winced at the term he used for me. It hurt because it was true. He reached behind me and picked up the clothes on the ironing board. He held the vandalized shirt up and clicked his tongue on the roof of his mouth. “Looks like someone got into their arts and crafts today." He looked over his shoulder at his comrade. “Do you see this, Tom?" “Looks like vandalized property to me. Of the Alpha, no less." Tom snapped his gaze toward me. “Looks like someone is in trouble." “She didn't do it," Vincent piped up. “It was me." What was he doing? The guards snapped their necks in Vincent's direction. “You be quiet, mutt. You can barely kill a fly. You expect me to believe that you would dare to do this to the Alpha's clothes? Oh no. This is the job of a woman scorned. Isn't that right, sweetheart?" I let out a low growl that was meant to sound menacing but it had no real grit to it. “Careful now." The guard holding the shirt threw it to the floor. “You are already on thin ice." Then the guard backhanded me causing me to fall against the ironing board. Pain shot out through my cheek and I tasted the metallic taste of blood in my mouth. “Stop it!" I heard Vincent yell above the cackles of the guards. “Leave her alone!" Why was he trying to protect me? “You be quiet, mutt." Tom roared at Vincent. “This little Omega of ours needs to be taught a thing or two about respect." One of them grabbed me by my neck and then flung me across the room until my back hit the wall hard with a loud crack. I fell to the ground with a loud thud, my arm breaking the fall. Pain shot up and down my spine. Sh*t. That hurt. It was in moments like these I wished I had listened to my father and just trained with the rest of my peers. I knew with the strength of my blood I would be able to take both of these worthless men easily, but they had training and size over me and I was outnumbered. I shook my head trying to fight against the ringing in my ear. I heard the distant shouting. I blinked my eyes trying to fight against my body's instinct to lie down. I focused my vision and tried to make sense of my surroundings. 'Come on Susan, I need you right now. I can't fend these people off alone', I called out to my wolf. But she didn't answer me. She was so far in my mind that I couldn't reach out to her. This was bad, very very bad. “Go! Run!" It was Vincent's voice that reached my ears. “Run, angel! Go far away from here." I looked up and saw Vincent fighting against the two guards. “Go, angel!" His voice was frantic. He was trying to fend these two men off for me. Men who were twice his size and likely going to kill him any second now. He had just met me and was willing to place himself in the line of danger for me and I had done nothing but scoff and turn my nose up at him. I had looked at him like he was beneath me when he wasn't. My family was dead. My pack was gone. My friends were all gone too. I had no one left on this earth apart from myself. My mate didn't even want me. He had rejected me in front of his wolves and now this is how they looked at me. I was nothing but the scum beneath their feet. I was an Omega. I was no longer Eva, the daughter of the Alpha and future Luna. I was Eva, the Omega. The servant who now served the mate who rejected her. This was my life now. “Angel, please run!" Vincent begged me. I may not be the Alpha's daughter anymore but I still carried my father's gene which meant I had the power within me. It just wasn't sharpened nor refined. 'Susan, I know you can see this. I know you can feel me. We need to help him. If we don't help him he will die at the hands of these *ssholes and I won't be able to live with myself'. I begged my wolf. Silence. She didn't respond to me which only caused my heart to plummet to the floor. 'Susan'. I begged her once more. 'We need to help him'. Then I felt the surge in my veins. Susan pushed herself forward and I shifted into my wolf. In one fluid leap, she lunged at the men and bit them on their necks one by one. I allowed her to have full reign as she took out all her frustration and grief on the guards before us. Vincent moved to the corner of the room, his eyes wide and his chest heaving up and down in panic. He didn't try to interfere, which was smart. Susan was moving on complete autopilot and I knew there was no way that I would be able to reign her in while she was like this. She flung Tom's lifeless body to the other side of the room. She didn't say anything to me or try to make conversation. She simply retreated back into my mind and allowed me control again still in wolf form. Vincent stood in the corner of the room looking like a scared duckling. He stared at the dead bodies and then back at me. I couldn't tell if he feared me or if he was impressed. But I didn't get to know the answer to that because the door swung open once more and the voice I had been wanting to hear boomed and vibrated against the concrete walls of the room. Zander.
