My heart raced in my chest. It thudded ferociously. What the hell…?
I had never heard any voices other than Susan's before. I didn't know what to make of it and the feeling of impending doom escalated. The grip on my wrist tightened, taking me out of my own head.
A pair of vibrant blue eyes stared at me with curiosity and confusion. In the moonlight I could see the small specs of silver that swam in his irises.
My goddess. He was captivating. I had never seen him in this light before. I had never seen him look so…attractive.
No. That was the mate bond.
Susan was loving his hands on our skin. Warmth shot out from the palace his palm met with our skin. My blood heated at the closeness between us.
“What are you doing, Eva?" His husky voice reached into my chest and wrapped my heart up in soft velvet.
My body was not behaving the way in which I expected it to. I didn't know what to do. This was not what I had been expecting at all.
I opened my mouth to say something but nothing came out.
How did you tell someone that you were about to kill them in order to give them mercy? I couldn't do it. No matter how low ranking he was.
“Did you check down here?!" a new voice came from outside the door. “Are you sure there is no one?"
It was Prince Reagan. He must have been looking for me and he sounded concerned.
“No sir there is no one," another voice replied.
“She could not just disappear. She has to be around here somewhere. We need to find her." He was scolding whoever he had been speaking to.
I opened my mouth to tell him that I was in here but then a hand covered my mouth and I was spun around so that now Zander laid on top of me. His body pressed down on top of mine subduing me.
My eyes went wide and I began to thrash in his grip.
Oh h*ll no.
Was he honestly trying to get frisky with me right now? No, there was no way that I was allowing that to happen.
I tried to kick him off but he somehow managed to get both my hands and legs trapped under him.
Then, like before, a voice ran through my mind. It was Zander's.
'f**k! She's going to get us killed.'
I shook my head. What in the world was happening to me?
Zander pressed harder against me. My breaths came out in low shallow pants but I eventually submitted. He was stronger than me somehow and I knew I could not fight him off like this.
“Keep searching," Reagan ordered and then I heard their footsteps going back up the concrete stairs.
After a few more seconds of waiting, Zander finally released and removed his body from mine. I ambled to my feet and glared at him.
“Are you insane?!" I hissed at him. “You just touched the daughter of an Alpha without permission."
He tilted his head to the left and took me in. His eyes stared deep into mine as if he was searching for something. Something that I was sure he already knew if he could smell my scent.
“Do you know if he had walked in on you how that would have looked?" I ran a frustrated hand through my hair. “Do you understand the magnitude of what this means?"
He just continued to stare at me like a bloody imbecile. I didn't know if it were because he was hard of hearing or what but the man was still as stone.
He breathed in a little bit and closed his eyes for a moment.
He knew.
When he opened my eyes it only confirmed what I had feared. He knew that I was his mate.
“You are—"
I raised my hand in the air. “Don't you dare say it. You will not say that word I forbid it."
This was a mistake. I was the daughter of an Alpha. I should be with an Alpha.
'No we are meant to be with him, I can feel it.' Susan was pleading with me. She wanted this but I did not. I could not allow us to engage in this little farce. I had a pack to think of. A bloodline to sire.
“I-I need to go."
I ran out of that basement like it was on fire. I needed to find Prince Reagan. I needed to somehow convince him that we were made for each other even without the mate bond. I climbed the stairs two at a time, my heels squeezing my poor feet with each step I took.
I finally came to the top but I stilled as soon as I smelled it.
My blood ran cold and my wolf immediately went on high alert.
The metallic scent of blood and the pungent aroma of death filled my nose.
My stomach churned and my heart plummeted to the ground.
“Dad," I took off running toward the ballroom I had left everyone in. I kicked my heels off pushing my legs as fast as they could carry me.
All was still silent in the garden but I could tell that something was off.
I climbed the steps that led to the entrance of the mansion. I burst through the doors to the ballroom and came to see the c*****e that had ensued.
Red painted every inch of the room.
It stained the marble floors and pristine white draping. Bodies littered the floor both in human and wolf form.
The large 'Happy Birthday Eva' sign was torn in half hanging from the pillars.
Bodies littered on the floor like confetti. I could hardly believe my eyes.
What had gone on here? Who had done this?
I was gone all of thirty minutes and this is what I returned to?
I saw the bodies of people I attended high school with. People I had only just talked to mere hours ago. They had been laughing along with me. They had been dancing and enjoying the night.
I walked into the ballroom wearily.
My eyes roamed the graveyard. Everywhere I looked was death.
I could name every single one of the lifeless faces that stared back at me. I knew them all. They had been people who had protected me. Loved me and my family. They had been loyal to us.
I needed to see if he was here. I needed to know if they had somehow also gotten my father.
I didn't want to see him like that. I didn't want to see his lifeless body laying there like the rest of these people but I needed to know. I needed to see for myself.
Tears welled in my eyes as I moved around the horrific site. Who would do this? On a day of celebration no less.
Rogues.
It could have only been them. They were the most ruthless and most vile of creatures.
I searched and searched and still could not find my father's body.
Had he escaped? Had they taken him prisoner?
All these questions filled my head.
I had just made it to the other end of the hallway when a rogue jumped out seemingly from nowhere. His beady little eyes peered into mine.
His shirt was off and his hands were stained red most likely from innocent blood they had spilled.
“Well, look what we have here. If it isn't a little straggler." He sneered at me. “Boys! We got one."
Rogues appeared from the entryways to the ballroom and surrounded me.
Fear bled into my body and I froze. I was outnumbered ten to one. Even in my wolf form there was no way I could take them all on at once. I was not that good or that strong.
“Please…" my voice cracked the first tear falling from my eyes.
“Awww, she's crying." The rogue laughed in my face. “Don't worry sweetheart. We will make this one as painless as possible. But then again where is the fun in that?"
The other rogues laughed only fuelling my panic.
The rogues moved in on me. I had nowhere to run and nowhere to hide. I was a sitting duck.
The rogues took one more menacing step before they straightened up and stood at attention. They saluted and cast their gazes behind me.
“Alpha,"
“At ease."
That voice. It couldn't be.
I whirled around and came face to face with the very man I had tried to strangle only moments ago. My hands had been around his neck and my heart had been set on killing him. And yet here he stood. Tall and filled with authority.
Everyone of the rogues and their heads bowed and inclined toward Zander.
They had called him Alpha, they were bowing to him. He was their leader.
The realization hit me all at once.
His wounds had healed quickly. The strength he had over me even though he was meant to be but a mere Omega. The mate bond that we shared.
It was unheard of for a wolf of Alpha blood to be linked to anyone of lower rank. Now it all made sense
Zander was no mere Omega. He was an Alpha himself.
Zander's gaze moved to me, his eyes cold and detached.
I stared into the eyes of my mate and I stood there frozen unsure of what to do next or what to say.
“Zander…" my voice trailed off as I stared at him. He was the rogue Alpha.
But how was this possible?
Had he pretended to be weak all this time? Had this all been a part of his plan?
My father had called him his son once upon a time. We had led him right past our border lines.
We had let the serpent into our garden.
Zander stalked toward me like a predator would to its prey. I stood there helpless to do anything. I was surrounded by my enemies. My pack and family were completely gone.
He came to a halt in front of me. His eyes staring at me with disgust and annoyance.
He hooked his finger under my chin and lifted my gaze. His blue eyes pierced right into my soul like a double edged sword.
On one end I was fearful of my life and on the other my body was abuzz from being so close to my mate.
“Kill her." Two words that d*mn well near shattered what little remained of my heart.
“What?" I yelled.
He turned his back on me and began walking away.
“No. You can't do this to me!" I shouted after him but he didn't stop. “We are fated mates Zander."
His footsteps stilled. He turned to face me fully. The distance between us was a mere two meters but it felt like an ocean separated us.
“I Zander Wilson, reject you, Eva Smith as my mate."
The pain hit me all at once. I double over, the tightness in my chest intense making it d*mn well near impossible for me to breathe. I clutched my chest, willing my heart to keep beating.
The room spun and I found my way to the floor.
The last thing I remembered was the cold smile on Zander's face as he watched me lose consciousness and detach from this world.
