Chapter Four

Beth’s POV

As soon as Beth heard Ethan say my mate she was so happy. She knew that wolf shifters had mates and she thought she was Ethans, but just as she was going to run into his arms she heard a shriek behind her. She turned to see Ashley with a huge smile on her face, and Beth’s heart broke. Of course it would be her he was talking about. Ashley shoved Beth out of the way and ran into Ethan’s arms, gushing “I just knew it! We were meant to be. I missed you so much baby.”

Just as I was about to turn away, I saw Ethan push her away from him as he said, “I wasn’t talking about you Ashley. I was talking about Beth. She’s my mate.”

“You can’t be serious! That slut can’t be your mate. I mean come on she’s pregnant with someone else’s baby for God’s sake,” Ashley shrieked.

I was mortified. How did Ashley know she was pregnant? What would Ethan think? Would he reject her? Before she could get too far into her negative thoughts, Ethan spoke. “Take a whiff, Ashley. What do you smell on Beth?”

Ashley stepped closer to me and started to sniff and her eyes widened. “No. It can’t be. You were away at Alpha training. There is no freaking way!” She shrieked again and stomped her foot.

I had no idea what they were talking about, but again Ethan clarified it for me when he said, “That’s right. You smell wolf on her. And I may have been at Alpha training, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t leave campus and, if you recall Ashley, Beth just moved here. We met when I was at Alpha training. I didn’t realize she was my mate at the time. I had a feeling, but didn’t know for sure until today because it’s her 18th birthday. So before you start calling my mate names and spreading lies, know what you are talking about. I don’t appreciate you saying those things about the mother of my pups.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I was about to say something when I saw Jess shake her head just a little bit indicating that I shouldn’t say anything. So I kept my mouth shut and walked over to Ethan. He wrapped me in his arms and I felt like I was home. I may not fully understand what was happening and why he was claiming my babies were his, but I knew from what Jessica had told me that mates are a big deal to them.

We walked away from the crowd that had surrounded us and walked into the cafeteria. We got our food and walked to the table Jessica and I usually sat at. Ethan wouldn’t let me carry my own tray and he sat it on the table. Before I could pull out my chair Ethan was there pulling it out for me. I blushed and said thank you. I was about to ask what was going on when a tall blonde-haired guy came over to the table and sat down beside Ethan. He said “Dude! Why didn’t you tell me this morning that the new girl was yours? I feel like an ass for spouting out that garbage Amber was spreading around.”

I looked between the two of them and saw that Ethan was clenching his fists tight and I asked, “What do you mean about Amber spreading garbage around? Was it about me?”

“Sorry. I know I shouldn’t spread what I hear from the gossip mill. You have been a hot topic since you came here. Amber said that her mom works at the local doctors office and told her that you were pregnant. She was telling everyone she could that you were a slut and that was why you had to move here from your old school.” The blonde guy said.

“What the hell Eric! You believed that trash? I thought you were smarter than that.” Jessica said angrily. She looked like she was about to rip his balls off.

“I said I was sorry Jess. I didn’t know. I only told Ethan what I had heard. I realize now I have made an ass out of myself. I don’t need you to make me feel like an even bigger one.” The guy I now knew as Eric said with a pout.

“I didn’t say anything to you dumbass this morning because I didn’t realize the girl you were talking about was Beth.” Ethan said through clenched teeth.

“Ok. Calm down everyone. If anyone should be angry right now, it should be me. Seeing as how we are in high school, I am not surprised that rumors are going around. What does surprise me is that my personal medical information is being talked about. That is a clear violation of my HIPAA rights, and that nurse is going to be hearing about it and so is the doctor’s office I was at. It seems I need to find a new doctor now. Also, Ethan, we are going to discuss what happened back there with Ashley and the whole take a sniff comment later.What I want to know right now is what this means about me being your mate. I understand the general aspect of what a mate is, but what I want to know is what does that mean for me as a human, being your mate.” I said.

Ethan cleared his throat and blushed while saying, “Well, for starters, being my mate means that we are boyfriend and girlfriend as long as that is what you want. Eventually, when you are ready, it essentially means you’re my wife in the shifter world. There is no other for me. I will always want to make you happy and you come before anything else in my life. I will never cheat on you, never hurt you intentionally, and I will be yours for life. We’ll become each other's best friend, lover, partner, and because I am a future Alpha, that means you will become our pack’s Luna.”

I had tears in my eyes by the time he was done talking. He looked at me horrified when my tears fell. He said quickly “I’m sorry, please don’t cry. I don’t know what I said, but please I’ll fix it, just don’t cry.”

I just laughed while I continued to cry while I said, “I’m not crying because something you said made me upset. Just the opposite. That was beautiful. It’s these damn hormones making me tear up. I swear I am not this emotional all the time.”

He smiled at me and it took my breath away. He was so handsome. I couldn’t believe that he was mine forever. “So does that mean you want to be my girlfriend?” He asked. I nodded and he had a megawatt smile on his face.

“I think I’m going to be sick. If this is what a mate does to you, I don’t want one.” Eric said, causing us to laugh.

“I think it’s sweet, and you are just an i***t, Eric,” Jessica said. “Beth, we're really going to be sisters now, and that makes me the most awesomest Aunt in the whole wide world.” Jessica declared. We all laughed at her antics. Just then, the bell rang signaling that lunch was over. I got up and went to grab my tray when Ethan stopped me and grabbed it himself.

“You know I could grab that. I’m not incapable of carrying a tray.” I huffed in annoyance.

“I know you can, baby, but that doesn’t mean you have to when I’m around.” Ethan said and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I couldn’t help but silently melt into a Beth-sized puddle of goo. He definitely was a sweet talker.
