After the movie ended, Jolee walked out with Candy, Jack, and me. “Thanks for coming, guys. We'll get together again soon," she called, waving to us from the porch.
“I've got a cab on the way," Candy said, waving to us as the cab pulled up to the curb. Jack walked with me to the sidewalk.
“It's early," he said, glancing at his watch.
“Cocoa has been alone for a few hours. I need to check on her and let her out," I said. It was the only excuse I had.
“I love dogs," Jack said, grinning at me.
“Sorry, Jack. I just want to go home and curl up with the dog tonight," I said.
Jack deflated completely, looking totally crestfallen as his eyes dropped to the ground. I wasn't sure I was any good at this casual 'blowing off' thing.
