3 Dryas Pacing back and forth on the verandah, I clutch the broken necklace that Rue left behind on the cliff. The broken sparrow digs into the flesh of my palm. I drive it in harder, searching my mind for an explanation. Why did Rue leave the necklace behind? A ruse, perhaps? Did she think that leaving something behind would make me think she’d jumped off the cliff and committed suicide? My face may be an emotionless mask, but inside my guts are roiling. How dare she run from me? Does she really think I’ll just stupidly believe that she fell off the cliff somehow? I grasp the necklace harder, the little glass sparrow’s broken body not quite sharp enough to break my skin. My mind is spinning in a thousand directions at once. Where is she? If I were Rue, where would I run to? Her
