Outsider

Stepping out onto the balcony of my room, I let out a sigh before closing my eyes and taking in a deep breath. This was my favorite time of day when the land was cast in blue and purple shades right before dawn and right after dusk. Blue hour as my Abu called it, she had come over from Spain after meeting my grandfather in Madrid during a business trip with the former Alpha. I never got to meet him as he died when my father was sixteen during a Rogue attack. Sadly, my father and mother met the same fate when I was three. My Abu took over their duties as Delta and raised me. I am the last of our line, so I’m next to take over, and I am sure the current Alpha and Luna wishes I had a less weird sibling who could take over instead. But they are stuck with me. I looked up to the sky as I pushed my mouth to one side with an exasperated sigh. There it was, a sky different from what others see. As far back as I can remember, I have seen a world above us, the other side, as I call it. It reminded me of how sea life might see the world above the water level. Beautiful, peaceful, and mysterious but always lingering over me. When I was younger, most just assumed it was my way of coping with my parents' deaths; to stare up at the sky and speak of seeing a place above, but as years passed, many would call me weird, even delusional. My Abu was the only one who didn’t seem to judge me but instead brushed it off as my imagination and stated it should be encouraged. Eventually, I just stopped talking about it. “My eyes are still broken….” I muttered to myself. I took a deep breath and turned my back to the scenery just as orange began to bleed into the land with the sunrise. Sometimes, I try to kid myself into thinking I have a greater purpose in this world, that my gift has something divine. But for now, I know that I’m just very different. It was three days until I turned twenty-one, and things around the Packhouse were becoming hectic as the Omegas ran around to prepare for the Ritual Ceremony on my birthday. Luna Jean and her Twin sister, Beta Ambre, were both helping my Abu with planning her retirement and my ascension. Both were in the same year of university and were civil to me, but neither had an issue talking to their friends about how weird I was behind my back. They were already mated, so their parents retired, and they’ve been covering their duties for two years now. They were naturals at it, and my anxiousness about my role grew. My Abu was a fantastic Delta running both the security and medical needs of the pack on her own; big prints to fill. I chewed on the inside of my cheek, reality weighing down as I pushed off the railing and went into my room to my ensuite bathroom. I had classes in about two hours, and it took forty-five minutes to get to the campus inside the city, so I might as well get ready. I stared at myself in the mirror as I brushed my teeth. I wasn’t plain looking, but I wouldn’t really consider myself to be someone who turned people’s heads either, though. From the pictures I’ve seen, I look more like my mother than my father; From her straight black hair to her teal eyes and body shape, she was taller than me who only stood at Five foot two and was beautiful. My nose, honeyed skin tone, and bow-shaped lips came from my dad, who most definitely inherited those Spanish genes from my Abu. Tucking my layers behind my ears, I finished brushing my teeth. I continued my morning routine, showered, dressed, and last makeup: mascara and some chapstick; I only wore lipstick and eyeliner when the occasion called for it. I picked up my messenger bag and took one final look at my full-length mirror beside my door, giving a half-hearted smile. “As good as it's gonna get….” I said to myself as I adjusted my black boat neckline sweater shirt that I paired with some jeans tucked in black scrunch boots. We are stunning… so stop it. I know it, and you should too. I rolled my eyes as my wolf spoke to me. Emi and I met almost three years ago, and she has been a pain in my ass since. Emi was very pushy and, at times, very aggressive, but I also admired her fearlessness. All werewolves get their wolf on their 18th birthday; mine was no different. Our wolves are supposed to make us stronger, guiding us and advising us on the path the Goddess intended for us. Emi was very wise, though she disliked my self-doubt; I could feel she was holding something back from me, but she would always say: You have to learn some things on your own… She doesn’t often speak, usually only when she is annoyed with me. Still, I can feel her all the time, observing like an ever-present shadow. “Yes, Emi.” I sighed to her as I opened my bedroom door and headed out into the central area of the Delta Wing. “Good Morning, Mija.” My grandmother called from the sitting room. There were papers scattered all over the maple coffee table in front of her. Her slender frame was sitting on the edge of the couch, looking at a form in her hand as she spoke. “You missed training this morning.” Even though she didn’t look away from her papers, I know she was not happy with me by her matter-of-fact tone. “….sí, Abu….” I walked over to the couch and adjusted my bag on my shoulder. “I got lost in the sky again….” As she looked up from the papers and at me with her eyebrows raised, I quickly averted my eyes to the floor before her hazel eyes made contact. I already knew a slight lecture was coming, but I just wanted to leave for Uni before I was late. “Mija…You are going to be Delta in a couple of days. Por Amor a las Diosa! You are expected to be a leader; you can not ditch training. Entendido?” I nodded my head as I knew she wasn’t actually expecting me to answer before looking up at her with a half-smile. “I will.” “Bueno…” She looked back to her papers as the scolding ended. “Be at evening training and have a good day at school.” Her tone made it clear that there was no room for debate as I nodded again, giving a little wave goodbye before turning to leave our wing. “Te amo, Abu.” “Te amo, Mijita.” She called out as I opened the door and stepped out into that hall to run smack into something that felt like a brick wall as the door clicked shut behind me. I rubbed my face to ease the ache away as a familiar voice spoke just as I looked up to see the most amazing evergreen eyes. “You ok? Sorry about that; I thought you had already left. Rylee is already downstairs.” Fuck; of all people to run into, it was freaking Colin Nolan. Gamma Colin Nolan and Rylee’s older brother. Gammas were in charge of the business and finances, and with his charm, brains, and good looks, it was a piece of cake for Colin. “No… um… I’m fine….” Colin was almost a foot taller than me standing proud at 6 feet with sandy blonde hair that seemed to perfectly fall into place and complimented his fair skin. He was wearing faded blue jeans with a skintight black shirt under a black blazer that showed his fit form, and it took me a hot minute to realize that I was just standing there staring at him. Goddess, tell me I wasn’t drooling. I could hear Emi snorting a laugh in my head as I stammered. “Sss...Sorry about that, Gamma.” Turning on my heels, I held onto the strap of my bag as I bolted down the hall to the stairs leaving Colin still standing in front of my doors with a cocky smile. Gammas and Deltas share the third floor, each having our own wings that house the presently ranked and their entire family. Seeing as it was just me and Abu in our wing, there was more room than we needed. Rylee, Colin, and their parents had the other wing. The top floor above us was the Alpha and Beta Wings, while the floor below us was all the Offices of the presently ranked and meeting room on one end, then the Nursery and Playrooms for the ranked pups on the other, though currently there was none. I jumped down the last three steps and landed on the ground floor just as an omega rushed past me. “Good morning, Delta.” I gave her a smile as I watched her take off towards the dining hall; It seems the chaos wasn’t over yet, and I was betting it wouldn’t be until after the event. I took a deep breath, realizing that I had been holding it since I ran away from Colin and walked out the front door of the Packhouse. Thinking back to that moment, I facepalmed myself. “Spazz much..” I scoffed to myself walking towards Rylee, who was leaning against my Mini Cooper. The morning sunlight caught Rylee’s sandy blonde hair turning it almost golden as it shined. She and Colin looked so much alike, you would think they were twins. However, Colin was four years older than us, four inches taller than her, and did I mention, a GOD! “You know we’re gonna be late to Psych, right?” Rylee stated as I pushed the unlock button and walked to the driver’s side. She pushed herself off my car, looking like a badass in her leather moto jacket, black cami that clung to her muscular frame and tucked into her stonewashed, fishnet-covered ripped jeans and black stiletto boots. “I was hoping we could stop by Invibe and get some boba teas before class.” Her pink lips pouted as she tossed her bag into the back seat and climbed in. “What took so long, Slim?” I hated Rylee’s nickname that came about during puberty when I developed into what she calls ‘Slim Thick.’ Still, after so many years, I got used to it. “I was talked to by Abu about missing training this morning….” She nodded as I spoke as she already knew I wasn’t there since she was. “And… I kind of… ran… well more like crashed… into your brother….” I could feel my cheeks warm up as a blush covered them, and she busted out laughing. Since the day she was born, Rylee was my best friend; we were exactly eleven months apart, though she couldn’t be more different. She was assertive, wouldn’t think twice about speaking her mind, and had no filter. She was brutally honest at times, but at least you could always count on her. Even if she disagreed with you and trust, she would tell you she didn’t, she would still support you in any decision you made. My crush on her older brother was no secret to her, and she found amusement in it all the time, knowing I would never act on it since he was not my mate. “Girl…. I swear…” She took a deep breath as she finally stopped laughing and pinched her brows as she thought out loud. “I am going to kick Colin in the shin as soon as I see him… bro messed with my morning boba!” I chuckled and shook my head as I pulled out of the lot and began our drive to school, with The Score’s Revolution coming out the speakers while Rylee sang along. I loved my car; it was small but surprisingly roomy, not to mention fast. I was an aggressive driver, and Rylee was used to it. I got us to Uni with five minutes to spare despite leaving late, whipping into a parking space. The rest of the day was pretty uneventful. I was a med student and really wasn’t all that interested in it. My grandmother thought it was the best option to prepare me for my role, but I preferred Cultural Anthropology. Still, the university has an excellent medical program that focuses on humans and non-humans, which I know is helpful knowledge. Most humans were aware that there were non-humans in the world, but they couldn’t pick one out of a lineup. I personally didn’t socialize with them much; Granted, I didn’t socialize more than I had to, aside from Rylee, who was by far the more sociable one. I couldn’t go anyway with her without running into someone she knew; she just had that magnetism about her, just like her brother. My mind drifted off to thoughts of that hunky slice of a werewolf with a dreamy smile on my face as I left my last class and headed back to my car. Rylee was already there, sitting on my hood. It looked like she was talking to some people while waiting for me, but I couldn’t see who as they were blocked from my view by another vehicle. As I drew closer, there was no mistaking the high-pitched Barbie-like voices that were speaking and causing my eyes to roll. Great….the Dubois Twins. "OMG, can you believe it!? Ryes! You could end up matched to Royalty!” “It is a shame that you are still unmated, but this could be your chance.” “I can’t imagine being 25 and still unmated like that gorgeous brother of yours. Not that he doesn’t have his pick for the night.” “Could be worse; what about Kie? I can’t even imagine who could handle her weirdness.” They giggled in unison as Rylee rolled her eyes at them both. “Not everyone ends up living on the same floor as their mate." She gave a pointed look at Jean before turning her green eyes to the other twin. "Ambre, you had to go halfway around the world to find Elie(Ee-Lay). It's not all that easy for some. Kie is unique, and I know the Goddess has someone that will match her awesomeness. So shut it.” I smirked while I walked up, seeing how Rylee had given them perspective. She was good at that, though she was also the only one I knew who could tell off the Luna and Beta. She shouldn’t be able to as a Gamma, but she has plenty of guts, or agallas as Abu says, to do so. She does not put up with people being rude towards me, and I admired her for it. I pulled my lips in as I made a tight, awkward smile to the twins as they finally noticed I had arrived after I unlocked my car. “Oh… hello, Kie.” They spoke in unison and gave me their classic insincere smile. “We were just telling Rye’s about the great news,” Jean said as she flicked her long brown hair over her shoulder with one hand. When I didn’t respond, Ambre continued while I tossed my bag in the backseat of my car. “Alpha Miles told Jean that your Ritual will have two very special guests.” She gave me a wink as I looked over the top of my car towards her. The twins were naturally beautiful, with chocolate brown eyes that matched their hair. The only difference between them was Jean’s freckles across her nose and cheeks; Ambre didn’t have any. Unless you could meet them separately, you would never know that Ambre was also the nicer one; She was more friendly but a bit of a people pleaser. Since her role as Beta was diplomacy, I guess it worked out. Jean was the more domineering, but her drive for improvement could be useful as a Luna. “That’s nice,” I stated sarcastically as I looked over to Rylee, who was climbing off the hood. Jean’s nose scrunched up in annoyance at my lack of participation in the conversation, and Ambre looked confused as she asked. “Aren’t you curious about who they are? I mean, it's your ascension… so you will actually have to mingle for once and lead the Run… it’s tradition.” Crap…. I hit my forehead onto the top of my car and just left it there. She had to point that out; it wasn’t as if I didn’t know about this. I was just avoiding thinking about it. I hated being the center of attention, and in three more days, I had no choice but to. I heaved a heavy sigh as I hit my head once more on the top of the car in defeat. “Ok.” Huge smiles grew on their faces as they gave little hops, barely being able to hold in their excitement. “CROWN PRINCE TAVIN(Taw-Ven) and PRINCE TATE!!!” They both squealed so loud that Rylee and I covered our ears. Wait….did they just say, prince? Fuck….my…life… I am so screwed.
