Chapter 1 - The Search for a Mate

1489 Words
**Ryder's POV*** A deep growl escaped me with one final thrust when I unloaded into the condom. I got up from the bed and discarded the condom before I started putting my clothes on. "Wait, don't go." She practically begged. I stopped for only a few seconds before I turned around and looked at this little she-wolf. "No, I have pack business to handle." I said in my authoritative voice without using my alpha voice. As I turned to leave, she grabbed my hand. "What's more important than going another round with me?" she attempted to sound sexy, but it sounded like she was begging me. "Blair, let go of me. I told you this before that it's only s*x between us. You're not my mate, nor will you ever be Luna of the Silver Moon pack." It was getting annoying; as the days until my father stepped down as Alpha came near, she tried to be Luna. She was desperate and willing to do whatever it took to be Luna; the b*tch even offered to do an*l. I almost threw up on her when she said that. It was pitiful and disgusting watching her degrade herself for a title that will never be hers. Now I see why her mate rejected her. They were so happy together. His alpha ceremony was coming up, and she would've been his Luna, but that changed when he found out that she was the pack slut. He instantly went and rejected her. But that's what I heard. You can never trust the rumor mill. I yanked my arm away from her and left the room without saying anything. If she weren't good in bed, I would've cut ties with her. I was so deep in thought that I didn't realize that I was already outside my dad's office. I knocked on the door, waiting for him to allow me in. "Come in." As soon as I entered, the air felt different. My wolf, Jake, started to get nervous and was pacing in circles, almost making me dizzy. I slightly bowed my head to him and his beta. "Take a seat." I started to get nervous from his tone of voice. "Since you haven't found your mate, and I don't want Blair as the next Luna. Also, because I want to retire soon, and you can't be an alpha without a Luna. You will be taking a teaching job in the town's high school. The students are a mixture of pack members and humans. The principal is also a wolf, so nothing to worry about." I was in a complete state of shock. "Are you being serious? I'm 25 years old. My mate isn't in high school, nor is she a human." I said that last part with pure disgust, but my blood ran cold when I saw the look in my father's eyes. "Ryder, that was not a request or suggestion. If you don't want to do it, I can always find someone else to be Alpha." My father rarely uses his alpha tone on me, but today was different. I couldn't help but bow my head in submission. "Yes, Alpha." My father smiled in victory and informed me of when I will be starting. When I got back to my room, thank goddess Blair was gone. I pulled the sheets from my bed and put fresh ones on. I don't even want a mate. I've seen how wolves get when their mate dies, and I don't want that for myself. ***Amber's POV*** My high school graduation is two months away, and I couldn't be any happier. I turn 18 in two weeks, and then I'll finally get my wolf. It sucks that I'm not around other wolves. My mom died in a rogue attack when I was four years old, and my dad hasn't been the same since. I know the Alpha allowed my father to go live with humans without casting him as a rogue because of how violent the rogue attack was. There's so much I've wanted to know about mates, but my father has forbidden me from asking about it. I was pulled from my thoughts when I heard banging on my bedroom door. "Go away!" I yelled at them. I wasn't in the mood to deal with my step-siblings. They acted like I was beneath them, and my step-mom didn't help, nor did my dad. Some days, I swear my dad thinks he's a human. Honestly, he hasn't shifted in so long. I wonder if he still knows how. I decided to get up and shower before school finally. Since the weather was nice, I decided to let my hair air dry. I took one last look at myself in the mirror. My long dark brown hair flowed past my shoulders in beautiful waves, and I put some lip gloss on. My dark blue skinny jeans hugged my curves. I felt my phone buzz, and it was my best friend Jessica letting me know she was here. My dad stopped me on my way out the door, and he seemed nervous but also excited. "Amber, I will be picking you up from school today. I have to talk to you about something important. But it's a private matter." He gave me a kiss on the forehead, and I left. I'm not sure why, but I didn't have a good feeling. When I got into the car, I could tell she was excited about something. "Did you hear we have a new teacher?" I gave her a confused look. We never really had new teachers. They typically moved a teacher from one school to another. "No, I didn't. What teacher are they replacing?" She gave me a shocked look. "Wow, you really haven't heard. Do you remember when that rumor was going around that our math teacher was sleeping with Ricky? Well, it turns out that it wasn't a rumor, and now our math teacher is pregnant." My jaw hit the floor. I really have been out of the loop. Before I could say anything, Jessica continued on."But allegedly, our teacher is new to the district and is smoking hot. I mean, other female teachers are practically throwing themselves at him." She was grinning ear to ear like she was going to try something. When we got to school, we went to our lockers next to each other, and suddenly, I felt a shiver run down my spine. "Amber, look over there. That's him," Jessica whispered shouted at me. When I turned my head, I couldn't believe my eyes. He looked like a Greek god. His button-up shirt was snug on him, showing off his muscles and tall frame; his jet black hair made his icy blue eyes stand out even more and with a jawline so sharp you could cut diamonds with it. He gave off an aura that commanded respect. If I didn't know better, I would say he's an alpha. But there aren't any wolves around here. I made a mental note to bring that up to my dad later. I didn't realize I was staring until we made eye contact. I could have sworn I saw him stiffen, but he quickly looked away from me and kept walking. For some reason, part of me wanted him to stay. Suddenly, I was excited, hoping there were other wolves. I would finally learn more about mates and what happens when you first shift. "Hello? Amber, are you paying attention?" Jessica had a smirk on her face. "Damn, I don't think I've ever seen you practically drool over a guy." The bell rang, and a wave of relief washed over me. For some reason, I never really found the guys in our school attractive, which made people question my sexuality. Which didn't bother me too much. I secretly liked to keep people guessing. Although if you knew me, you would know I was straight. We said our goodbyes and went to class. ***Ryder's POV*** I just left the main office after introducing myself to the principal. Since I've arrived here, the female teachers have been practically throwing themselves at me. It was mostly the humans; the she-wolves knew better. They knew I could be a cold-hearted playboy. As I walked towards my classroom, some of the pack members slightly nodded their heads as a sign of respect. Suddenly, I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when my eyes landed on her. I couldn't believe my eyes. It couldn't be her. I thought she died along with her parents in the rouge attack years ago. I quickly mind-linked my father and our betas, asking them to meet me at my office when I got off of work. Jake was restless. He knew something wasn't right, things weren't adding up, and I wasn't going to stop until I knew exactly what was going on.
