UNEXPECTED VISITORS

1873 Words
The cold hung in the morning air like a curtain. It was a cold December morning and I had woken up late yet another morning. I groaned and hurriedly got ready as I needed to start my day soon so I could complete my daily chores. Heading down for breakfast I was welcomed by a warm and cozy living room joined to a kitchen that had nothing else but a large brown badly scarred wooden table to the side with six chairs.   My dad who sat around the roundtable along with my sister barely greeted me as I came bounding down the stairs. He was talking excitedly about all the fruit trees he would plant next season and you could see the tiny little veins dancing on his bald spot. Light filtered through the windows and I could see that the snow was starting to melt.   “Your majesty has decided to grace us this morning, for what are we deemed worthy?” Claire rose and gave a slight bow.  I rolled my eyes. Always the dramatic.   “It’s just so cold in the mornings it’s so hard to leave a warm bed” I whined.  I grabbed a slice of bread off of the little wooden counter top jutting from the wall and poured myself a cup of coffee. I breathed in the warm air and the familiar scent of my home while watching my sister and dad continue to talk excitedly about fruit trees. They were definitely father and daughter for sure. Our mother died when I was five and my dad bless his soul did the best he could to raise us and to make sure we were happy. Granted there were times we gave him hell and it wasn't easy for him raising two girls without a mother or any other female help but he held out. As I bit down on the bread I stared at my older sister Claire, so bright and witty. She had thick beautiful blonde hair that she had in a high bun, a thin frame and the prettiest blue eyes that you could drift off in. I would always jokingly mock her that her eyes were icebergs just like her soul and she would mockingly respond by raising a fist. Claire was indeed a beauty and I was beyond proud she is my sister. She is my best friend and mother all in one even though she is just older by two years . I on the other hand had a slender but curvy body, my breasts and ass are full and my hips dipped and curved.  I had long brown hair cascading down my back and big golden brown eyes. I was always told I looked exactly like my mother except the hair color. Now that was from my dad. There was suddenly a heavy knock on the door snapping me out of my thoughts and I place the mug down. Our father stretched up to his extremely tall slender frame and made his way to the thick wooden door. We didn’t have that much visitors as we tended to mostly just farm and mind our business so we were curious as to who it could be at our door on such a cold morning as this. He opened the door and standing at the door way were two stern looking soldiers clad in iron with the blazing orange emblem engraved on their chest. You could see their breaths floating off into the morning air. Their presence made us uneasy and I could see Claire get tense. Soldiers didn’t just pay you a visit unless something was wrong or rather someone did something wrong.  I couldn’t bring myself to swallow. I felt it in the pit of my stomach that nothing good was about to happen. Nothing good at all.  Father leaned against the door and put on his solid front but I could tell that he was just as anxious as to what brought these soldiers to our doorsteps.  “Good morning gentlemen” “ Rosemarie Fraser?!” the burly man shouted looking past my dad as if he didn't see the tall man standing in front of him. That was my name! I looked up wide eyed unsure of what exactly I had done; I hardly went anywhere outside the farm. So what crimes could I have committed? My mind raced frantically trying to piece it together and I  could hear my heart beating in my ears. Why do I feel like I'm on the verge of passing out? I did nothing.  “ Under the command of his majesty the great King Kadmus you are to come to the palace to start your new duties!” New duties??? What is going on??? I could hear whispering outside and knew the other townsmen had already gathered nearby to eaves drop.  “ What new duties?!” My father asked worriedly. My sister shifted her weight and the other rough looking soldier grasped the hilt of his sword. This was serious, very serious. They were both mature, bulky men who seemed well trained and hardened beyond their years. The annoyed speaking soldier looked forward in the room scanning as much as he could see.  “This must be a mistake, are you sure you have the right person? What duties does the king require of her?!” my father questioned barely hiding the anguish in his voice, hoping in his heart as all of us in the room that it was a grave mistake.  “She has the light of angels in her!” he sneered and braced forward. You could tell he was over the exchange and ready to go. “ The seer confirmed her this morning. Now pass her along and stop wasting my time!”  My father looked back at them puzzled and I could see the fear in his eyes. Everything felt like it was happening so fast, a normal morning turned upside down. This was clearly a mistake but these soldiers would not leave without carrying out their orders and that is to bring me with them. He placed both hands forward pleading with the uncaring men before him “Rose is a normal farm girl. There’s nothing extraordinary about her. She has never exhibited anything out of the norm.” The guard clenched his teeth, looked down at the ground and grinding his teeth so hard the muscles in his jaw were prominent. He  looked back up with his eyes narrowed and coldly shouted.   “For the final time I said pass the girl!”  My body flinched at his rough tone and I was becoming increasingly worried for father. I could see one or two neighbors through the opened door standing afar taking in the scene and whispering to each other. It was the most excitement they’d had in weeks but what probably made it even more exciting was that it was about us. The family that kept to themselves.  I could feel myself turning pale, my mouth hanging wide open. If I had the light of the angels that means I'm an Aura. I couldn't be, they were extinct and I have absolutely no powers except for making the best blueberry pie. I could feel the icy cool air filtering through the door way and that must have been what kept me standing.  They must have made a mistake? It’s not possible. What is happening and how do I get out of this?! Nothing magical had ever happened to me before or anyone I knew of related to us. I was broken out of my frightening thoughts when my sister stepped forward and bravely shouted “ Fine, I’ll go!”  This cause my head to snap up as I looked at her fearful and confused trying to tell her no but she refused to look at me. Has she lost her mind? My head then started to spin and I felt like I was in a haze. No, Claire couldn’t or shouldn’t but I felt like I couldn't move. She can't risk herself for me.  “ Do we look stupid?" the other guard says exasperatedly " Let’s go now!” he gruffly demanded and nodded at me. I stared at Claire who looked on the verge of tears and anguish. I had to go. There was no way I could refuse the King, what would happen to me or my family if I did? I willed myself to move forward.  I must be brave, I must be strong if even for my dad. I give my dad and sister one quick final hug and told them not to worry and that I loved them. Two beautiful blue eyes plead with me.  "Rose don't go. You can't go." her soft voice beseeched and she shook her head causing her tears to fall. She knew it was no use. I had no choice and she gripped my arms. "I love you and I'll come for you. Be strong" she whispered. My heart was tearing into a million pieces as I kissed her hand and wiped away her tears.  " Take care of father and no matter what happens I love you beyond anything in this world." I told her hugging her tight and fighting the tears threatening to spill.  My dad said nothing. He couldn't formulate words to express what was happening but his hands held me in an iron grip not letting go and I feared what would happen to him if he didn't. He lost his wife and now he was losing one of his daughters that he swore to his wife to protect. " Dad you have to let me go. I will be fine. I will come back to you before you know it. Dad please, I promise I'll be fine. Let me go." I  whispered and pleaded with him. His eyes swam with tears and it broke my heart. His grip on my arm didn't lessen and  I could see the soldiers in my side vision shuffling and my heart picked up its beat. " Dad please, let me go" I tried to reason with him trying to pull away from his tight grip on my arm.  " I can't let anything happen to you Rose. You're my baby girl"  " Dad I'll be fine, I promise. I'll come back to you. I love you, now let me go" I prayed within my heart that he would let me go. I couldn't lose him. He quickly let me go and I could see his hands shaking. I prayed he would survive this. He barely survived the death of my mother.  I heard the soldier grumbling under his breath and I shuffled and headed for the door.  The cold was biting and I took one last look at my home. My eyes filled with tears and I could feel my heart racing against my ribcage as the dread filled me of what I didn't know was to come. I was leaving my heart behind. As I made my way through the door and on to the horse they had waiting one question stood in my mind.  What could they possibly want from me?
