1259 Words
Melissa grew up in a small Island, she was the only daughter to billionaire Mr and Mrs Smith, as a child she knew that servants and maids tend to her every needs because her mom and dad were so busy with works and hardly had time taking care of her, her parents were so wealthy and had plantations and factories where they have lots of workers who grows cottons, turns the raw material into fabrics and other items and exports them to different countries of the world. Melissa attended one of the most prominent schools in her little community of Asgard, As a child she had teachers who came over every weekend to the mansion to teach her how to read and write. Her parents want her to be so intelligent and smart so she would be able to manage the family business when they are no more. When Melissa turned twelve she often sneaked out of her room in the middle of the night to go be with the head servant's son Leo who was about her age but older than her by four years. He was her best friend from when they were little, they often do all the fun things, but he wasn’t allowed to go anywhere closer to the main building when Melissa’s parents were home, because that would be trouble if they found out he’s friends with her. Most of the maids and servants who were employed to work in the house, had a quarter in the big compound where they lived with their own families. It was an acre of land and Mr and Mrs Smith's mansion was the most exquisite house anyone could think of on the island. They made provision for other little houses where servants and maids who worked in the house lived with their family, in the morning they would walk to the main house and make sure the house was organised and everything was kept in order and neatly cleaned up, and by the evenings everyone would retire to their own quarters and mind their own family, the other worker who walked in the cotton field not have a house in the compound, they come from there own houses and were paid by the Smith’s as an employee for there services rendered. It was one of these nights again after dinner, the maid cleared the table and Melissa said goodnight to her parents and went into her room to sleep for the night. She waited until the whole house was quiet, with that she got out from her bed, and went over to her wardrobe, took out her sweatshirt and a thick socks and hand glove, she wore them and used a muffler scarf to wrap around her neck. As she went over to the window and slowly opened it, being careful so it wouldn’t make a noise and wake her parents who were by this time fast asleep in their room three rooms before hers. Making sure the window was wide open enough to let her through, she looked down and saw Leo beneath her window standing outside ready to let her down with the ladder which he had already placed very well so Melissa could climb down. Melissa crossed her right leg from the window and placed it on the step of the ladder holding it tightly as she dragged her left leg too, and began climbing down gradually. “Be careful,” Leo whispered, holding the ladder so tightly so it didn’t leave his grip. Melissa got to the edge of the ladder where Leo was still holding it, Leo used his right hand to help her down as his lift hand was still fixed on the ladder. Melissa's right leg touched on the ground and so did the other leg too, as Leo then left the ladder and they both ran out through a dark corner in the yard laughing in law tone, happy they finally made it through again that night. They both walked through the narrow bush part that led to the mountains, after walking for about thirty minutes and got to the top of the mountain, Melissa could see the ocean once again, this was her favourite view ever, and she loved the way the ocean looked at night with the bright light of the sun and moon descending on the surface of the water. The weather was so cold that night, and Melissa was grateful that she dressed up to beat the weather to its game. She wants to stay there at the mountain for long and view the nature of the mountains and ocean, and would have rushed back home as usual if she hadn’t come prepared. Because staying out by that time without a sweatshirt or socks one would freeze up. She wasn’t scared of staying outside up until morning, because she knew her parents won’t come to her roo to check on her in the middle of the night. The only person who sometimes made them go back home early was Leo whose parents might go to his room to check on him, and if they find out he is out here with her in the middle of the night, that would be trouble for him. “What are you thinking of?” Leo asked Melissa as he took the blanket he brought along with him and wrapped it around her, as they both sat on the mountain top and looked at the sea. “Don’t you sometimes wonder how beautiful the ocean looks?” Melissa turned to look at him. “Sure, I do think about it sometimes,” Leo agreed. As Melissa turned back to stare at the sea. “Have you ever thought about the world beyond the sea, on the other side ?” Melissa pointed, as her gaze went far across the distance. “No, but I think it will be very beautiful there,” Leo said, staring out of space too. He hadn’t really thought about it, but had known that one day he would travel out of the island and see the world. “I wish I could go there,” Melissa said. “Sure, one day I will take you there,” Leo teased her. As they both laughed. “How is it going on with your mum and dad, have you had the chance to tell them how you feel?” Leo asked. “No, I feel there is no point in talking to them, because they don’t really care about me.” “Hey, don’t talk like that, your parents love you a lot, look how they made sure you have everything you want, they sent you to a good school and provided teachers who come to the house to tutor you,” Leo explained. “So you think, how many times has my mum sat with me at the dining table and had breakfast or dinner? Let's not talk about lunch, we have never had a family time unlike your family, who are happy and always there to spend time with you,” Melissa said. Leo was quiet, because he knew Melissa was telling the truth, she was always at their house and took his parents as hers since they are always there when she needed them. But she doesn’t want her to hate her parents that much, that’s the reason he still tries to convince her that her parents care about her by pointing out these things to her, why he thought they do care
