Chapter 1

There was a sweet scent in my room today and I have no idea where it was coming from. I don’t recall putting any new wall plug-ins and I don’t think my roommate changed our laundry detergent recently. The smell was messing with my head and I couldn't get enough of it. Sniffing the air, my nose led me towards my bed. I climbed onto the bed to sniff it but the only scent coming from my bed was mine. I sniffed again, this time the smell was coming from my wall. I touched the wall thinking that there would be residue from perfume or spray, but there was none. Just as I was about to take another whiff, loud moans penetrated through the walls and I rolled my eyes at the sound.  Unfortunately, I’m used to the sound of f*****g since my roommate is a w***e who likes to sleep around with someone new every other day. But today was hitting me differently. It’s making me feel agitated and annoyed and I can’t focus on anything else but this anger that is building up inside of me. I kneeled on my bed, grabbing the pillows to squeeze my head in between them. The moans only seemed to be getting louder and I screamed in frustration when a loud thud was heard from the wall behind me. Did they really just try to shut me up?  I grabbed my phone from my nightstand and opened up YouTube music, scrolling through the endless array of music. Nothing was catching my eye and I could feel my body tremble from the anger. I needed music and I needed it now.  I clicked onto the next music my thumb landed on, which happened to be a lullaby being played on a violin. I turned the volume up on my phone and started humming with it, the anger slowly dissipating within me as I took a deep breath in and let it out slowly. I assume they were done since there was this momentary silence when I heard my roommate, Abby lets out a loud moan. I stared at the wall with a disgruntled look as they went at it a second time, this time louder than before. I'm usually good at muting her out but the scent was making me lose my composure and not knowing why is making it worse.  “That’s it”, I growled out while ruffling my hands up in my hair. I threw the pillow that was on my lap back onto the bed and connected my phone to the speaker via bluetooth. Getting up off the bed, I walked towards the small speaker that's on my dresser and clicked the volume up button until it beeped at me. Music blasted into my room as I closed my eyes, letting the sounds of the violin take me to a different place than here. My breathing calmed once again while I chuckled to myself when the door to my room busted open and an angry Abby walked in to turn my speaker off.  "Hey! I was listening to that!" I yelled at her.  “What the f**k Elira? Why did you have the music up so loud?” I gave her a deadpanned look and snickered. Did she really not know why I blasted out the music? I looked at the long tee that she was wearing, clearly not hers as my eyes caught sight of her clean shaven peach when she threw her hand up in disbelief.  ‘Slut’, I thought to myself. I flinched, surprised that I would call her a slut over something so minuscule. I’ve seen her walk around the house naked and it never bothered me before. So why am I so affected by it today? My gaze met her eyes and she scoffed at me while crossing her arms, waiting for an answer.  “I was tired of hearing you f**k. Tell me is it the same guy or is it a different guy today?” I bit my tongue as I said it and her eyes widened at my sudden remark. I opened my mouth to explain when she raised her hand to slap me only for me to catch her by the wrist, twisting her arm behind her back until she was squealing like a little pig that was about to get slaughtered. I didn’t know why I find hurting her amusing, this behaviour isn't me. The sweet scent filled my senses and my grip on her wrist tightened as I pushed her down onto the floor growling.  “Is everything okay, Abby?” Her walking dildo asked as he entered my room. The smell was stronger now and I closed my eyes inhaling it in. I let out a small moan, slowly letting go of Abby’s wrist as she scurried out from underneath me.  “What the f**k is wrong with you! Ow!” She complained while massaging her wrist out.  Mate. Mate. Mate. I opened my eyes shocked that the inner voice inside my head is calling out to my potential mate. I looked up to see a tall, tan, muscular man with brown hair and green eyes staring down at me. His hair was messy from s*x and his jaw was chiseled to perfection. He c****d an eyebrow at me as his nostrils flared, taking in my scent and I can feel my arousal starting to build. This was not how I imagined meeting my mate. I turned my head scoffing at him, displeased at the fact that my mate was f*****g somebody else. I grabbed the jacket that hung at the back of the chair next to my desk and headed for the window. I pushed open the window and stuck my head out, taking in the fresh air. I looked down at the grass below me and stuck my foot out the window and then the other as I adjusted my bottom to sit on the ledge. I contemplated jumping from the second floor and smiled when a decision finally came to mind. The distance from my window to the ground wouldn’t even leave a scratch on me, that’s one of the perks of being a shifter.  “Elira, what are you doing?” Abby asked, concerned.  Giving her and my potential mate a smirk, I looked down before opening my mouth to tell them to “Enjoy f*****g!” and flipping them off as I jumped out the window. I landed on my feet and looked up at Abby who was screaming thinking I had died when my mate stuck his head out the window. He gave me a cocky smile and I rolled my eyes at him before making a run for the woods. I've been mateless for 25 years and I could do without one for another twenty-five more if I have to.    I reached a part of the territory where the younger and rowdy teens go to hang out. Which means I’m halfway out from the borders of our pack territory. The trouble makers that come here would do anything and everything their parents wouldn’t allow them to do here. I looked around, making sure those nasty little vermins weren’t around before stripping out of my clothes. I gave myself one big stretch before shifting into my wolf form. The color of my coat was white and my eyes were emerald green which was considered rare for a wolf. Grabbing my clothes into my snout, I started running again. This time I ran to a place only I knew about, not even the Alpha or the patrolling Warriors know about this place.  My mother told me that I had a bad case of walking out of the house in the middle of the night when I was younger. From what I was told, I would walk out towards the edge of pack territory and just stand there before coming back home close to dawn the next morning. One night I woke up in the middle of my slumber and didn’t recognize where I was. I walked until my little feet couldn’t take it anymore and ended up here, at this small hill with one giant oak tree growing on top of it. It was like the tree was calling to me and I was drawn to it. The next morning, I used my nose to take me back home before the Alpha sent his best trackers to look for me. Ever since that day, my mother would always lock me in my room at night but I would always end up by the tree during a full moon. For a wolf, I seemed to like spending my time away from my pack. Not that I hated them but I’ve always felt like I didn’t belong. While the other kids partied and drank, I stayed home and studied. When they were old enough to look for their mates, I went to college and got myself a nursing degree. I only came back to the pack territory because my family begged me to attend the new Alpha ceremony. It seems like a big deal but really it isn’t. Whenever the next Alpha takes over, a bonding ritual must take place with the entire pack. When it’s done, everyone is somehow connected to one another and now we could link or talk to one another telepathically. And after the ceremony, there's a hunt and that is what everyone is looking forward to.  The hunt is usually made for the unmated wolves to appease their growing s****l hunger but mated couples would join to enjoy the thrill of hunting their mate. It was made into a sacred ritual back when the Wolf God Brothers had the men in the village run around naked, chasing the women and beating them with a stick to ensure fertility. But all of that stopped when the Goddess of the Moon and Wolf Diana, was caught by Endymion during a hunt.  Just like the original hunt, the women would run somewhere within the pack territory while the men waited in the banquet hall for the Luna to officially start the hunt. The hunt begins when the Luna or future Luna shifts into her wolf form and runs away from the Alpha. The hunt lasts until the Luna is caught by the Alpha which usually takes around two hours if the Luna was a skilled prey. The shortest hunt our pack has ever done was probably around thirty minutes because both Alpha and Luna couldn't wait to get into each other's pants. But if one was lucky enough, they just might find their fated mate within the crowd.  The only thing different about this Alpha ceremony is that our current Alpha is giving his title to an outsider, since our Luna is barren from a fight that left her womb scarred and unable to carry their child.  The way our wolves work is much different than the ones you read in a book. We don’t have a wolf friend that we can talk to, we are that wolf and when we shift, we let our wolf act on their own animalistic instinct. We shift like any other shifter and conceive like any other human. There was also the chance where the females in our pack are unable to carry a child. Our world doesn’t consist of just wolf-shifters. There are demons, faes, witches, spirits and even vampires but the ones that everyone is scared of is the legendary dragon shifter.  Legend has it that the dragon race became extinct a long time ago during a war with the humans but others claim that they are still alive and well. They only shift when they need to and live far away from the sights of humans and their technology. Others also say that the witches and the spirits of nature had created an area specifically for them while using a cloaking spell to hide them in. It is believed that the Bermuda Triangle is where they reside and that is why technology doesn’t work and getting in it will only bring out your death. I looked over to the side before hearing a deep howl coming from the main area. It was a signal that the ceremony was going to start in thirty minutes and that other packs from different regions were entering our territory. Apparently, this new Alpha of ours isn’t what he seems to be. There were whispers around the packhouse about him being a halfling. They claim he’s the descendant of the last dragon king since no one really knew much about him. It was strange to me that a dragon shifter is becoming an Alpha for a wolf clan. It’s funny how rumors work.  I jogged over towards the oak tree and shifted back into my human form when I heard rustling coming from behind me. I turned around to see a giant black wolf with golden eyes staring straight at me. He was bigger than any of the wolves in my pack and was towering over me. The scent that he was emitting was sweet with a hint of oak and my nostrils flared, taking him in. He growled and I felt something cool slither around me, causing me to moan and fall onto my knees. I locked eyes with the beast as he walked closer towards me, sniffing my hair before shifting to his human form before me. His gold green eyes swirled as I looked into them and he gripped my chin up, exposing my neck. He leaned in to nuzzle my neck as he took my scent in, sending shivers down my spine. He growled again and I could feel myself getting lost in his aroma. My head felt light and my heartbeat thunder when I felt him lick my neck.  I snapped out of whatever trance I was in before and jumped off the hill shifting and landing on all fours. I looked up to see the man that Abby slept with, naked in all his glory and ran back towards the house.
