Prologue

I watch a couple of kids running around holding their ice cream cones with a bright smile on their faces. Anyone who saw them would think they were adorable and cute. Running around without a clue that the world they’re currently walking on was a damned place much worse than what they think. I took my eyes away from the kids and was about to raise my foot to walk away when something caught my eyes. Behind the three children, two girls walk hand in hand. They looked pretty in their cute dresses and blonde hair, but that wasn’t what caught my eyes. It was the fact that these girls looked so alike that there was nothing to tell who was who between the two of them. They were twins… Just like me and Lily. After our parents died from a chain car accident, we both lost our parents and were sent to the orphanage after a week of mourning them. It didn’t take long for the orphanage to take us from our relatives since they hadn’t really cared about what happened to us nor asked us if we were alright when they walked into the burial grounds of our parents. And instead of acting like responsible adults, they didn’t even ask if we had anywhere to stay now that we were alone. They just went to take a look at the pale faces of our parents then left without a word. And since we were only kids at that time, I had no idea about what happened and what they were thinking. After the funeral, several ladies came to take us away from our home. We had no choice but to follow them since the house we’re living in was about to be sold again and they promised to feed us everyday. I could still remember when Lily walked behind me to hide from their curious gazes, fidgeting under their eyes and digging her nails on my palm.  I heard her whisper, “Who are they?” “I don’t know…” I replied. Since then we both lived inside the orphanage for the past two years. We liked to play with the other kids there and since the adults in the orphanage were also very kind to us, we learned to love the new place. But it didn’t take long for the beautiful picture to burn in front of our eyes. Just after a few weeks, a couple dressed in expensive clothes and perfumes came to the orphanage. I heard the sister of the orphanage telling me that the couple did not have a daughter and came to the orphanage to look for one when I asked her. I didn’t really care about the couple for as long as they didn’t pick me. I didn’t want to part with the orphanage and the family I created in it. But little did I know, I should have cared… After all, the couple decided to take my sister away from me. I remember myself crying for days after they took her away. I demanded the orphanage to bring her back, to return her back to my side, but they didn’t. They couldn’t after taking the money that the couple gave to them as ‘charity’. And that when I started rebelling against the orphanage. I destroyed the room I was in and didn’t play with the other kids. I didn’t even try to attend the classes that we needed to take. I skipped all of them since I hated them like I hated the orphanage for letting my sister go. And most of all, I hated myself for being weak back then and letting them take her away. Biting my lips as I fought back the sour tears pooling my eyes, I turned my back when the twins passed by me. It hurts to see them together.  Because now, my twin sister is dead.
