His lips drew back in a scornful smile. “Heck, the night breeze feels good.” A muffled scream echoed off the room and his eye dropped onto a Caucasian male strapped to a chair; his mouth was gagged, and his arms were tied behind the chair. Pain filled his face as he sat still on the arm chair, staring at his captor, his body covered in bruises and his cheek wet with blood and sweat. His left eye seemed swollen. “Forgive me Mayor Collins,” The buggy man simpered, “I tend to get distracted at times.” The buggy man folded his sleeves and wrapped his arms behind his back, walking towards the labored man. “So, where were we?” He spoke with a gentle and dangerously low voice, stopping in front of the mayor and ripping the duct tape gag off his mouth. The mayor glanced up at him with frightened eyes, his body trembling. A large, deep wound was visible across his forehead, and the surrounding hair was matted with blood. The buggy man leaned forward, bringing his lips to touch Collin’s ear. “Now, you are going to tell me everything you know about Genesis.” He said in a whisper. “How many people knew? And you are going to give me their names –all of them.” “You know that is not possible, Lord Crystallow.” Collins breathed, his chest heaving. Sweat shimmered on his forehead. “I can’t tell you anything.” Desperate for an answer, the buggy man pulled out a gun and pressed it to his throat. “Oh, you will talk.” He snarled, staring into his eyes. “…that I can assure you.” Blood trickled from Collin’s forehead slowly. He turned to stare with weak eyes. “You’ve tortured me this far and I haven’t said a thing.” Collin muttered weakly, looking up at him. “You think a gun will make me talk?” Crystallow thought he picked up a note of silent laughter in his voice. He almost wept in frustration, but remained rather stoic -reminding himself to keep his rage in check. “Oh, this gun,” Crystallow smiled, turning to look at his gun. “This gun wasn’t meant for you.” He got up and walked away, moving towards a large box sitting at the corner of the room. Collins followed him with his eyes, unsure of what the box holds. He watched as Crystallow opened the box and pulled out a familiar figure from it. Every muscle on his face tightened, eyes widened, chin jutted outward and brows rose at the sight of a woman whom he recognized. Turning to glance at Collins, Crystallow pressed the gun to her forehead, the corners of his mouth quirked up. “The gun was meant for her.” he smirked.  The woman, short of breath, puled in Crystallow’s arm, momentarily confused at what was going on. She turned to Collins and held his gaze. “Who is this man?” She whimpered between her sobs. “What is going on?” She quivered, her hands trembling. “Leah, calm yourself, I assure you everything will be fine. We’ll both be out of here before you know it.” Collins assured, staring into her confused eyes. “Don’t make promises you can’t keep Collins.” Crystallow chuckled, dragging Leah by her hair. He threw her on a table, and pinned her hand to the table with his gun.  A gunshot echoed, and her index finger was gone as the bullet punctured the table. Leah let out a shrill cry as she turned to look at her hand stained in blood. She watched in horror as her detached finger lay on the table. Crystallow turned to Leah with a condescending smile. He watched with pleasure as the blood poured from her finger. “Let me assure you sweetheart, I will kill you. It all depends whether your husband gives me what I want or not.” “Collins, give the man what he wants. I’m begging you.” She cried, staring with bloodshot eyes. She held her bleeding finger, trying to stop the blood from gushing. Collin broke tears as he watched his wife’s finger bleed severely. Crystallow chuckled, dragging her hand and pressing it onto the table. He lowered the gun onto her middle finger and turned to Collins. “I would listen to my wife if I were you.” A lopsided grin plastered his face. “You might be able to resist me, but I don’t know if your wife can.” Another gunshot echoed, followed by a horrifying scream. The bullet punctured the table, crushing Leah’s middle finger as if it was nothing.  Her blood spluttered across the table. Leah hands remain on the table as she screeched in pain. Her hand was shaking. She couldn’t lift her finger. “God damn it!” Collins cursed under his breath, watching his wife bleed. His eyes were dark pools of fear. “Stop it already!” “I give you exactly five seconds to spill out everything you know about Genesis, and the people involved.” He said with a note of seriousness on his voice, turning to Leah and grabbing her hand.  “If the next word that comes off your mouth is not what I want to hear, you wife won’t have any finger left to call a hand.” She tried to resist but her strength failed her; Crystallow overpowered her. She immediately succumbed to his desire in other to lessen the pains that may arise from their struggle. “I would have to continue until all of her fingers are gone.” Crystallow pressed her finger onto the table. “…and then, I’ll start with her toes.”  “Five!” He started counting, raising his gun and pulling back the hammer. Leah followed his gun with her eyes, her body trembling. His huge, slightly green eyes gave her a startled look. “Four!” He lowered the muzzle onto her ring finger. Leah whimpered as the cold metal touched her finger, her hands shaking. “Three!” Leah turned to Collins, her sad eyes begging him to give Crystallow what he wants. Collins felt sweat broke on his brows even though the room was rather cold -maybe too cold even. His heart was beating faster than he could think. “Two!”             Crystallow slid his finger to touch the trigger, turning to Collins with a fierce look on his face. Their eyes locked in a shared understanding. “I am sorry.” Collins mouthed to her. His body shuddered as he watched his wife’s tears fall. “One!”  Crystallow pulled the trigger, releasing a bullet from the chamber into her finger, crushing her bones as it tore through the table and rest on the earthen floor below. Leah watched with wide eyes as her finger detached, spluttering hot blood across her face. Her face was frozen in an open scream, and her cries were inaudible as she gripped her wrist. Her blood trailed the table.  “I can keep this up all day.” Crystallow smiled with contempt, turning to look at Leah. “I don’t know if she can.” He shot a glance at Collins. “You can put an end to her suffering. Tell me what I want to hear, and I’ll leave her alone.” Collins bit his lower lip, not uttering a word. He knew not to.  Crystallow snorted, a cocky smile crossed his lips. “That is what I thought.” He clutched Leah wrist, forcing her hand on the table. Leah cried, struggling through his tight grip. The more she struggled, the more pain she felt. She whimpered, shutting her eyes as Crystallow placed her hand on the table and lower his gun onto her little finger. “Wait!” Collins voice echoed.  “The names!” Crystallow thundered, eyeing Collins impatiently. “Just let her go.” He breathed, “I’ll tell you everything you want to know.”             “Wrong answer.” Crystallow pulled the trigger, shattering the last of her finger. Leah collapsed with her hands shaking. She could no longer take the pain. Her entire body was trembling from the pains she felt.             “That is not how it works.” He turned to Collins. “I call the shots, not you. Your wife is down with only one finger on her right hand. Maybe I should start with the left.”             Collins shut his eyes as he let the tears flow freely. Watching his wife being tortured was much worse than he’d imagined. He preferred it would rather be him who’s being tortured.  “Genesis is a plan to bring Beocraft back to the way it was from the beginning.” He finally heard himself saying. A costly mistake, he knew, but for now he had to save his wife. Collin’s statement piqued his attention. “Go on.” He said. “The plan is simple; we use the gun from the spirit mantis to destroy every mask ever forged by the dark shifters. This way, we hope to bring everything to its natural order.” “…but then, I found out about your plot.” Crystallow smirked, walking towards him. “You know what’s funny?” He stopped in front of him. “You almost succeeded with this plan.” He came nose-to-nose with Collins. “Give me the names of the people involved.” Collins turned to look away, not uttering a word.             Crystallow walked to Leah and grabbed her arm. Leah whimpered between her sob as he pressed her left hand to the table.  “You refuse to talk and I blow her finger.” Crystallow sighed heavily, pressing the gun onto her index finger. “Are we really going to play that card?” “Costea, Berlin and Legolas –these are the names of the people involved.” Collins uttered weakly. A line appeared between his brows. “Just three?” He expected there would be more. “I swear to God, it is just the four of us involved.” Collins swore, his sad eye filled with defeat. “Thank you…” Crystallow simpered, lifting the gun from Leah’s finger. Lena breathed a sigh of relief after the gun was removed from her finger. She closed her eyes to say a silent praying, her chest heaving. And suddenly she felt the gun pressed against her temple, and when she opened her eyes, crimson painted her vision. Her blood spluttered across the room, and her lifeless body dropped. “No!!” Collins cried loudly. Collins lunged at Crystallow, but was restrained by the rope wrapped around his chest. His eyes grew wide as he watched his wife’s lifeless body bleeding on the cold floor. Veins became visible across his neck, and his eyes were bloodshot. He felt what little was left of his energy ebb away. Then he turned to look at Crystallow with scorn. “You promised!” He bawled.             Crystallow smiled, picking up a rag to wipe the blood stain from his gun. “I did promise to end her sufferings, didn’t I?” He spoke calmly, blowing dirt off his gun. Tossing the rag aside, he walked to Collins. “We both know this was going to happen. You should have given it a second thought before you turned against us.” Pulling back the hammer, he straightened his arm, raising the gun to Collins’ head. “Your wife would be lonely on the other side. Perhaps I should unite you two in death.” Collins’ eyes widened, his body trembling. A gunshot echoed off the room.
