There were so many questions swimming around in my head. Here I am, getting in a car with a complete stranger. "Trust her." A voice said from within my head. That isnt my voice though. Am I going crazy?
As I walked across the street towards a small orange buggy, Hannah started to speak.
"So do you live with Tabitha?"
"Yes we've been roommates since freshman year in university. We actually just moved here yesterday."
"That sounds just like me and your mother."
And with that the conversation ended. As we drove it in silence, I tried to think of a less intrusive question.
"So... what do you do for a living?" I asked, hoping this would be easier than facing the elephant in the room. She sighed before she responded.
"I'm a writer. I work for The Silverwood Chronicle." She told me.
"Thats amazing!" I beamed. "I start my first writing job on Monday. Maybe you can give me some tips?"
For some reason I love knowing shes a writer too.
"I would love to." She smiled back at me.
"How long will you be in town?" I questioned her.
"I'm not sure yet." She told me as we pulled into the parking lot. I followed her to her room, laughing internally that I was just in this room on Thursday night. Of course, they gave us the same room.
Once we were in the room I sat on the couch. Trying to think of anything to ask her. There were so many things it was hard to pick just a few. Thankfully, Hannah started talking to fill the silence.
"Do you want a water?" She asked me as she opened the mini bar.
"Sure, thanks." I answered meekly. She handed me a water and sat on the other end of the couch.
"First things first I guess, what has Karen told you about your family history?"
"Not much. I know you and mom left and aunt Karen never did. She married Carl and then they've lived here ever since." I dont know what she expected me to know. She looked horrified that that was all I knew. Probably because I didnt even know mom left with her until yesterday.
"I also know my parents names were Harvey and Beth, and they passed away when a drunk driver hit them. Harvey and the drunk driver died on impact. My mom was in critical condition for three days until she eventually passed away from complications." I think this the most I've ever talked about my parents. Before I could even finish my thoughts Hanah blurted out something I doubt I'll ever forget
"Linsey, you're a werewolf." She said it so seriously. I couldnt help but laugh.
"Is this one of those prank shows?" I asked not even thinking. Hannah looked horrified.
"No this isnt a joke. Your mom was half werewolf and half human, on your grandmother's side. And your father was a full blood werewolf." She looked so sincere. But, how could I believe this? I couldnt be a werewolf! Wouldnt I know if I was one??
"I dont understand." It was all I could say.
"Look I'm sorry to just throw this at you but I need to explain the rules we are bound by before we go back. You have to decide if you're going to risk Tabithas life by telling her. You can, but if she tells any other humans she will be put to death by your pack alpha." She looked almost scared as she told me.
"How can this be? Why wouldnt my aunt Karen tell me?? I dont understand" I was petrified. Either this woman is totally crazy, or I actually am a werewolf. I thought of running but this woman knows where I live.
"You wouldnt know for sure until you meet you're mate or your 21st birthday. Whatever comes first." She said in a low voice, probably trying not to escalate the situation. "You'll have alot of preparation to do before your birthday, but I'll help you." She said with a small smile. So that's why shes here all of a sudden.
"Does that mean aunt Karen is a werewolf too?" I asked.
"No, your grandma on your moms side cheated on her mate, your Grandfather, with a human and because your grandmother was human, Karen was born completely human. After that, your grandfather left all of them and they were shunned from their pack." Hannah explained and I just sat quietly trying to absorb all this information. After a few minutes Hannah spoke again.
"If it's okay with you, I'd still like to stay at your house. It will give us more time to prepare you before you change for the first time."
I was frozen, but I nodded my head in agreement. From the sounds of it I would need her help. How did my life get so complicated??
