V. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 22 years ago It was a cold winter night, as Nika made her way through the dark night in silence. The winter blew an icy wind through the trees, which made her pull up her cape even higher, as she pulled her shoulders up. Damned wolves and their warm furs probably don’t feel anything of this winter’s cold! She thought through gritted teeth, as she kept stepping through the snow that had been falling non-stop since it had started just a couple of days ago. She knew she could have just flashed herself from one place to the other, but she knew it would not be wise to give away too much about her true identity just yet. So, she forced herself to keep stepping forward in the cold, one foot after the other, since she had sensed something from miles away already, something strong, something of great magic, the thing she knew she needed to find for her council, in order for her to return back home. After another ten minutes of walking through the snow, the magical pull was almost too hard to deny, and Nika knew that she was close now, as she walked up towards the foot of a mountain. Nika sniffed in the air. Wolves, yuk! She hated werewolves and everything that came along with them, including their disgusting scents and smells. But she was almost there, just a few more steps and she would have made it. She would make the deal and get out fast, get back home, to the safety of her own cave, and away from all these nasty wolves smelling of wet dogs. Nika slowly made her way to the left side of the mountain, keeping an eye out for any potential threats, as she saw an entrance which led into a small cave, and the magic almost pulled her inside itself, like a magnet. She slowly stepped inside, and was almost immediately standing eye to eye with another woman. This woman’s hair was almost the same color as the snow on the grass outside, and eyes blue as ice. Give this woman a blue or white dress and she could have walked around, yelling she was the snow queen, and everyone would have believed her without question. “Are you Rosanne?” Nika asked the white-haired woman, whose eyes grew wide as she heard Nika’s question towards her. “Did they send you?” The woman asked, as Nika nodded her head, making the other woman sigh in relief. “Come inside, I’ll get him ready for you.” The woman spoke, not an inch of emotion in her voice as she turned around and stepped deeper into the cave. Nika followed the woman, and despite the fact that this woman was beautiful on the outside, Nika found it hard to believe that a woman or any person looking like her, could live in such harsh conditions. This cave was cold, wet and dark. One could get easily depressed, living in a place like this for a while. Rosanne stepped towards one of the walls, and as she leaned forward, the noise of a soft cry filled the cave, not just any cry, but that of a newborn baby. Rosanne turned around, the baby was wrapped inside a dirty blanket, as she stretched her arms, telling Nika to grab ahold of the tiny infant for her. “I don’t want to hold him, just take him.” Rosanne spoke, making Nika’s forehead frown deeply. What an odd witch indeed. Nika thought, as she took the child from her. Nika had come to this place, thinking that this Rosanne woman would try to pick a fight, or change her mind, cry at the very least. But she just looked ‘shut off’ as she turned around, looking at Nika in wonder, as if she was waiting for Nika to say something to her. Which she did, asking the questions her bosses had told her to ask. “Is the child in good health?” Nika asked Rosanne, who just nodded her head fast. “Yes, he’s perfectly fine. So give me what was promised to me and get the hell out.” Nika was, once again, surprised by the response of the witch standing right in front of her. Witches were known to have fewer feelings for anyone but themselves, but she had never seen a witch that didn’t even cherish some feelings for her own child. Nika looked down, looking at the newborn, trying to understand why Rosanne wanted this to be over so fast. But Nika couldn’t find anything. The newborn looked beautiful, healthy and was already sleeping as he had turned his little head against Nika’s warm chest. “You understand the rules of this transaction? I will take him, and you shall receive extra magical powers. You will have no rights over this child in any way after that, so if you change your mind tomorrow, it is on yourself to blame.” The white-haired woman nodded her head again. Her eyes were looking towards the opening of the cave every few seconds. Nika wondered why she did that. Do I need to worry about someone else coming? “Yes, yes, I understand. Can you please hurry up and leave? I don’t have all day to stand here and chit chat.” Rosanne growled. Nika nodded her head as she grabbed something inside her cape, a small flask with a potion which was made by the most powerful witches and wizards inside her own coven, the council. Something any ‘normal’ witch would never be able to brew on her own. “Why do you even need extra magical power?” Nika asked Rosanne, as curiosity was having the best of her. Rosanne glared at the other witch, as she shrugged and her skinny fingers grabbed ahold of the flask for dear life. “I cast a curse, it took most of my powers away, I need to strengthen myself, my plan isn’t finished just yet.” And Nika looked at the deranged woman as she talked. Hate, So much hate! And then, it clicked for Nika. This woman in front of her was plotting a revenge on someone, and as she looked back at the child, she knew. Rosanne was plotting a revenge against an old love, one that had betrayed her deeply. So deeply that Rosanne would never be able to love someone else ever again. Not even her own children. Nika looked back up as she nodded her head, it wasn’t her job to worry about this witch in front of her, nor did she care, to be honest. She turned around as she walked out of the cave, feeling Rosanne follow her quickly. Nika turned around again, seeing why she was being followed exactly. “What will happen to him?” Rosanne asked, and now Nika was surprised, sensing at least an inch of maternal feelings coming from Rosanne. “He will be raised with other boys, the same as him. Half wolf, half wizard. The coven stumbled on a prophecy, your son is a part of that.” Rosanne’s eyes darkened as she stepped back into the cave. “I don’t have a son, you witch.” Nika sighed deep, not in a mood to answer this weird woman back anymore, before she turned around and walked out with the newborn baby still lying in her arms. She honestly felt sorry for the tiny creature in her arms already. If only this child had had a different mother, his life could have looked so different. And right as Nika flashed herself out of the cold winter night, with a newborn baby wrapped in her arms who did not even have a name yet, as far as she could tell, a wolf’s howl sounded through the trees, a howl of pain and sadness, coming from a male wolf who had just returned to a cave, as he had come back from his hunting trip.
