Weekly Dinners

I couldn’t believe it, in one more month I would be eighteen. My parents were planning a huge party. It wouldn’t surprise me if they invited the whole town. We lived in a small town in Nebraska called Clatonia. There were only about three hundred people living here, so everybody knew each other. There were no secrets in Clatonia. Looking at the clock, I realized it was time to get ready. Once a week we go to the Maurice’s for dinner. I loved going because my boyfriend lived there. Mr. Maurice was the mayor of our small little town, and my boyfriend Josh’s father. My dad was his assistant, though I am sure his title was much fancier sounding. The Maurice’s lived in an enormous mansion, and their dinners were always huge. Josh always said he would be the next Mayor after graduation. I sifted through my closet and decided on a flowing summer dress, and my new hot pink heeled sandals. I carried my outfit to the bathroom and hung up the dress, placing the rest of my stuff on the counter. I took a hot shower, deciding on using my strawberry cream bath wash. Josh always said he loved how it smelled. After I washed my body and hair I got out wrapped my towel around me and slipped on my bath slippers. I plugged in my straightener and blow-dried my hair. My hair was so thick it always took forever to straighten it. I had long thick red wavy hair. Mom always said I got it from dad, though his hair changed as he got older. After what seemed like forever fixing my hair, I picked up my dress off the counter. As I was pulling on my dress, my eyes lingered on the scar on my left thigh. I never really knew exactly how I got it, but it always made me self-conscience. I was nervous when Josh and I had s*x for the first time. He would notice it and ask me questions. It ran all across my thigh. Shaking my head back to reality, I finished getting dressed and applied my makeup. Satisfied as I looked in the mirror I slipped on my sandals and went downstairs. “Hey, Mom, do you need any help?” I asked her. “Oh Laney, you look so beautiful,” she said as she smiled at me. Mom was acting very nostalgic lately. I’d be lucky If she didn’t start crying and telling me how I am growing up in the next five minutes. “Thanks, Mom,” I said as I walked towards the kitchen counter. “I am all done here, but could you tell your father we are ready to go? He’s out back,” She said as she was wiping off the counter. “Sure, Mom,” I said, and with that, I walked off towards the patios, which leads to the backyard. My Dad was standing on the deck with a clipboard in hand, writing stuff down. “Um, Dad, we are ready,” I said “Thanks, Hun, I Will be right there.” He answered back without looking up. I shrugged my shoulders and walked back inside. “Mom, what is Dad doing?” I asked as I came back into the Kitchen. Just then my Dad walked in and sat his clipboard down. “I’m just taking some measurements for the party. Our Baby Girl only turns eighteen once.” My Dad said beaming at me. Where my Mom’s hair was a chocolate Brown, my dad had a Red Brown mix. His eyes were Hazel like mine and Moms were Brown. Both were about average Height. “I can’t believe my baby girl is growing up.” My mother said as tears welled in her eyes. And there it was, My Mother, getting all emotional. It never fails. Thank God I had plans after dinner or I would have to hear it all night. I don’t know how many times this week alone she has brought out my baby albums. All my friends including Josh have seen them at least twenty times now. It was so embarrassing. I reached over and hugged her." Mom, I am turning eighteen, not moving away. Now let’s go before we are late" I said She nodded her head and dabbed her eyes. We grabbed all the food and headed out. *************************** Josh’s parents’ house is enormous. I have been with Josh for a year now and still got lost in their house. As I went inside Mrs. Maurice hugged me and told me everyone was in “The Spot”. “The Spot” Was a name Josh gave to the Game room and theater. It was where all the teens hung out in his home. “Thank You,” I said as I kissed her cheek. She was like a second mother to me. Our family has been close for so long. “Can you tell them Dinner is in thirty minutes?” She asked. I nodded my head as I went to find the others. As I walked in I saw Sarah, Stacey, and Rain, my three best friends sitting at a table. Before I could walk over and join them I felt arms wrap around my waist. “Mm you smell so good” Josh whispered as he kissed my cheek. I whirled around and faced him, placing my arms around his neck and said, “You don’t smell so bad yourself.”. Truth was, he smelled delicious. He leaned down and kissed me. I pulled him closer, savoring his lips on mine. “Oh, come on! Get a Room,” I heard someone yell. I pulled away, rolling my eyes, and turned around to find my current annoy-er. It was Jeremy. Jeremy was Josh’s best friend and the biggest player in our school. I always wondered how he managed a different girl every day in this small town. He had a Blonde haired petite girl on his arm, as usual. Jeremy had wavy black hair and brown eyes. He’s muscular and tanned, good-looking but did not compare to Josh. Josh had sandy blond hair that was always in this awesome just got out of bed look that actually took him hours to perfect. He had dark blue eyes. He was Tall, Dark, and Handsome. “So are you going to introduce your friend?” I asked Jeremy, smirking, knowing he wouldn’t. He always said if he introduced them then the girl would think they were his girlfriend and become too clingy. He gave me a look and walked off. His little Blonde friend looked back and threw me a wave as he pulled her along with him. “I kind of feel bad for her,” Sarah said. As I looked over, I noticed my three best friends were now standing by me and Josh. “Me too, oh and dinner will be ready in, well fifteen minutes now,” I said “We are still on for tonight, right?” Rain asked me suddenly. “Of course,” I answered her back. We were having a sleepover at Rains and going to school in the morning from there. “I just have to change and get my stuff later” I added. “I want some alone time with my girl,” Josh said as his eyes fell on the three girls. They slightly bowed to him and walked off. That was how it always was, it seemed, anytime Josh said anything to my friends. Sometimes I felt like he was demanding them and it pissed me off. But my friends always reassured me it was ok. He grabbed my hand and led me to a corner table. We sat down and I noticed we could see everything from here. There were about thirteen of us down here. It was always that way at the Maurice’s weekly dinners. Some of them were playing video games, others were talking, and then there were the couples who were making out. I suddenly felt a constant tap on my shoulder. I turned to Josh, realizing I must have missed what he had said. “I am sorry. I was just thinking about how big your family dinners are.” I said. He laughed, “Well, I was hoping we could go to dinner this weekend” “That sounds fine, of course, we can,” I said “Well How about Saturday, because Sunday is the big Barbecue?” He asked me. I forgot all about the big town Barbecue. We held it once a month during warm weather. If it was really cold, we had dinner in the town hall. Before I could answer him Mrs. Maurice hollered “Dinner time kids”. Josh took my hand, and we headed upstairs as the others followed behind. We took our normal spots at the table. Me, Josh, Rain, and Jeremy always sat at the grand table. The others sat at the other smaller table. I would much prefer to sit with all my friends, but this is how it always has been. Surprisingly, Jeremy’s “date” sat at the other table. He was just so rude. As we all made our plates, everyone made small talk “You ready for your big day, Laney?”  Mr. Maurice asked me. “Yes. Mr. Maurice.” I answered. They acted like my birthday was tomorrow. It was almost a month away still. “Nonsense, you may call me Phil dear. You are like a part of this family and will be for a very long time.” He said with a smile. “Thanks, Phil,” I said. Josh squeezed my hand under the table. I looked over at my mother, but she only looked lost in thought. I expected an emotional comment from her but am surprised she said nothing. Dinner went on as usual. Afterward, the girls and I stood up to help Mrs. Maurice clear the plates, but she only shooed us away. “You girls got a sleepover to get to and there are plenty of us here to clean up,” she said as she motioned around to my mother and the other ladies. I hugged my parents and thanked the Maurices’ for dinner, then said my goodbyes to Josh. Then we left in Rain’s car. ******************************* Two hours later we were back at Rain’s sitting on her bed painting our nails. “So Laney, do you think Josh is the one?” Rain asked me as she put the lid back on the nail polish she was using. “Well, I mean we have been together a long time, but we are still young. I mean, we haven’t even graduated yet..” I answered.  I love Josh. But I was unsure when we would take the next step in our relationship. “Do you feel all tingly when he touches you?” Sarah asked, giggling. “Do you feel tingly when Mark touches you?” I counted back playfully. She and Mark have been together for almost three months and they were so good together. She had him eating out of her hands, that is for sure. “I do.” She said dreamily. “Well, I mean Josh and I are past the whole butterflies in the stomach tingly stuff now,” I answered her. Rain only looked at me as If in thought then said" Well I hope I meet my ma... Soul mate someday." I felt terrible Rain had never dated. Though, she always talked about meeting her soul-mate. Rain was beautiful, she had long black hair, Charcoal colored eyes, and the perfect figure. She was short like me. Whereas, Sarah had long wavy blonde hair. She was tall with blue eyes and curves the guys loved. Stacey had dark-colored hair, almost black eyes, and beautiful almond-colored skin. I always envied her high cheekbones. She looked like one of those runway models. Then was Cassie. We weren’t the best of friends, but Stacey liked her, so she often hung out with us. Cassie had long straight blonde hair and blue eyes, but she had a reputation with guys, and that was putting it nicely. A light tapping came at the door as Rain’s mom Candy poked her head in, " Hey Girls. The school is going to be closed tomorrow. I guess a pipe burst, so you can stay up a little later."  We all cheered in excitement. It means we get a long weekend. “Thanks, Mom.” Rain said “Don’t thank me. Thank the pipes.” She laughed as she shut the door. When she left Stacey and Cassie began pulling yager and red bull out of their bag. “Yager Bombs!” We all said at once. We made drinks as we laughed about our luck.
