唐玄宗天宝十四载（755年），安史之乱爆发后，李白由宣城避地剡中，不久即隐居于庐山屏风叠密切地注视着事件的发展。次年冬，永王李璘以抗敌平乱来号召，由江陵率师东下，过庐山时，坚请李白参加幕府，李白出于一片爱国热情便接受了他的邀请。
不料李璘暗怀和他的哥哥李亨争夺帝位的野心，不久即被消灭，李白也因而获罪，下浔阳狱，出狱后，又被判处长流夜郎。李白此时已五十八岁。
唐肃宗乾元二年（759年），李白遇赦得释，结束了长流夜郎的生活，行至江夏（今湖北武汉），太守韦良宰招待了他，他写此诗以赠。
