Tired of living in poverty, Grace had to make the decision of living home at the tender age of 13 in search of a better life for herself and her family. She works as a house help for Mrs Jones for many years and there, becomes a victim of constant abuse and domestic violence from her boss's husband, Sam. After years of enduring, Grace searches for true friendship and comfort. She then meets Tony, who later became everything she desired in a true friend. Months later, her boss travelled leaving her with her husband and the kids. One night, Mr Sam walked into Grace's room in an attempt to rape her but somehow, she manages to escape and it continues like that for years. She couldn't report him to be his wife but she feared for losing her job. Years later, she moved in with her boyfriend, Tony who demanded that she should get pregnant for him if she must continue to stay under his roof. Grace had to return to her family. But was not pleased with the situation of things at home. So she had to find her way back to town, with the decision never to return home without enough money to cater for her her family. The very first night she got to town, she was raped by some robbers and her little she had was taken. Later, she met a woman who took her in. Things took a different turn when the woman died, because, her husband and son constantly used grace as a tool to satisfy their sexual needs. Grace became friends with James, Who encouraged her to speak up. She did and her offenders were arrested. She got enrolled in an adult school and she became a strong independent young African woman who was able to give her family a good life. At the end of the story, she owned an NGO that defends women rights. They encouraged young girls to speak up against domestic abuse. The NGO had a slogan "Your past does not define you".
