“Mate!” We both exclaimed at the same time, our voices filled with shock and wonder. My heart rate increased drastically, and my brain was trying to comprehend everything that was happening and the weight of those words.
His expression shifted from surprise to a possessive growl, his eyes darkening with a primal instinct. My own wolf responded in kind, her excitement mingling with a newfound sense of belonging.
No, I couldn’t find my mate now—not when I still had to carry out my revenge and was also living the life of an imposter. This wasn’t even my real body.
A part of me felt inexplicably drawn to this man, as if we were two halves of a whole finally reunited.
We simply stared at each other, both at a loss for words, with unspoken understanding and an undeniable bond forming between us.
“Wow, I never expected my mate to be this beautiful,” he said, his voice soft and filled with admiration. His words made me blush, but then my smile faded as I remembered he wasn’t exactly complimenting the real me.
“I’m not in the right place in life to have a mate,” I mumbled, the words slipping out before I could stop them.
His face fell, and a pained look crossed his eyes. “Are you indirectly rejecting me?”
“Yes,” I whispered, my voice trembling. “I’m sorry. I hope you understand.”
He paused, a bitter smile curling his lips. “Fine. I accept your rejection too.”
“Wait, what?” I looked up, shocked by his sudden agreement.
“Yes,” he said, his voice strained. “Same here, beautiful mate. Unfortunately, I’m not in the best place in life to accept our bond or have a mate. I’m glad we can both understand each other.” His smile was bitter, and his eyes betrayed the pain behind his words.
Before I could say anything, he turned and jumped out of the treehouse, leaving me beyond speechless.
"Fuck, I didn't even ask his name," I muttered to myself, the realisation sinking in as I watched him disappear into the distance.
