War and Peace is a novel by Leo Tolstoy, first published from 1865 to 1869 in Russkii Vestnik, which tells the story of Russian society during the Napoleonic Era. It is usually described as one of Tolstoy"s two major masterpieces (the other being Anna Karenina) as well as one of the world"s greatest novels. War and Peace offered a new kind of fiction, with a great many characters caught up in a plot that covered nothing less than the grand subjects indicated by the title, combined with the equally large topics of youth, marriage, age, and death. Though it is often called a novel today, it broke so many conventions of the form that it was not considered a novel in its time. Indeed, Tolstoy himself considered Anna Karenina (1878) to be his first attempt at a novel in the European sense.

“No! He shall not be pardoned. No-one steals from me and lives to tell the tale,” master Fareed replied, turning away from her, a stoic and hardened expression on his face. His back was turned to her, wide and rigid, like the back of a warrior in the face of war. The sands swept across her face; the Arabian desert was beginning to stir. The sun was already setting in the west horizon, stretching their shadows to the east. Tallest among them was the executioner's dagger, raised above her father's head; poised and ready to strike at the master's command. “Please! I beg of you,” she sobbed, bowing her head. She was aware of the numerous eyes staring down at her with their breaths held. Never had a woman stood up to master Fareed. Never. “I'll do anything you ask me to. Please spare my father,”she begged. “Anything.” “Anything?” master Fareed turned to her, a single eyebrow raised sharply. “Anything,”Noor replied, looking up into his eyes for the first time. “Have you ever hurt a woman?” I knew what she meant but decided to play dumb, “Well, I would like to believe that I have wounded some of their hearts…” I replied then with a tell-tale wink added, “…and hurt at least some of them to their liking.” She had the nerves to look annoyed! She rephrased the question, “Have you ever, intentionally, physically hurt a woman in a way that caused her distress or physical injury?” -“No” -“A child?” -“No” -“An old person?” -“No” -“Have you ever sexually assaulted a woman…” -“I believe, I have already answered this question…” I cut in, unable to control anymore. Unfezed by my protest she finished her question, “...or became an accessory in it or, helped someone to get away with it, willingly or unknowingly?” -“No” -“A child?” She had no idea how much danger she was in. I somehow controlled the rage that was threatening to surface and said, “No” Her interrogation was over, but I was just getting started. -“That’s it?” I asked and she looked confused. -“So it’s alright for me to assault people unless they are women, children or old men?” I prodded. At least she had the decency to look ashamed. "Just because I said that I did not, can you be sure that I actually never did hurt any of the people you just listed? What makes you think that a master deceiver like me would be honest with you?" “What if I killed a hundred men, savaged women double that number, brutally mistreated an innumerable number of children, yet lied to your face? Is my “no” enough for you to let go of that suspicion? Are you that gullible? Or is your ego that easily satisfied, because the salary that I am paying you is too difficult to let go of? ...Can you be sure that I am not shuffling through ways of torturing you in my mind, right at this moment…and that once I am done shuffling I would not turn your life into a living hell?” I couldn't recollect crossing the distance from my chair to hers and towering over her in my blinding rage, but when I realized what I was doing and prepared to back off, she surprised me with her reply... *** Please express you opinion about the story in the comments. We don’t want this any more than you do.” “We have kept you in our home! We fed you, spent money on you for so many years, and this is how you pay us back!?” “Tiffany needs this heart more than you do. She will die without it!” With the last trace of strength she had, Laraine yanked the needle out of her neck and into her chest where her heart was thumping wildly. “Laraine!” Nathan shouted angrily, his eyes becoming fierce, “Why? Why did you do that? Tiffany is your sister. You would rather destroy your heart than give it to her! She was right. You are very selfish!” Laraine felt like she was on fire. Hot! It was so hot! Suddenly, she felt someone kissing her lips, crushing and gnawing on them. She tried to push the person away, but the fire and pain in her body made her approach him if only to ease her pain. Suddenly, her sharp pain subsided, as quickly as it had come. Laraine blearily opened her eyes. She tested her limbs and was surprised to find her naked body still ached. Where was she? Had not she been killed? Why was she lying naked in a strange bed?
