It is the year 2173. Human beings have evolved to use more than 10% of their brain, and as an effect, possess supernatural powers. Luna and Lara Valkyrie grew up in a foster home in the town of Westhaven, California. Both 18 and having been born on the same day, they were raised as twins, Luna adopting Lara's surname because of her own being unknown. Westhaven is a lovely town, the perfect place to live the american dream in. There is only one problem. Not only there, but in almost every place in the world, human beings are branded with a number, that being the amount of supernatural abilities they possess. By the time each child reaches the age of 18, that number becomes permanent, and everyone with a ranking above 5 is taken away. From that moment on, they belong to the government, and must train in government facilities that are a lot like prisons or army bases. Their eyes are changed by machines, and they are identified for the bright aura-like color that surrounds their pupils and contrasts against their natural eye color, "the sunflower effect". The day of the chosen has come, and Luna Valkyrie is a seven. When she is taken by government guards, she believes her life is over. That is, until she meets Alexandra Pertierra, a brazen 23 year old with a rank of eleven who turns her world upside down with a cocky smirk.

Chosen
Unknown POV "I'm afraid," said the little girl lying on the top bunk, "I don't ever want to be eighteen." Young Lara, who had been almost asleep in the bed below sat up and scrunched her small nose, frowning, "What are you talking about, Luna?" "The day of The Chosen." Lara scoffed, "I know. What I mean is: don't be. I think it would be an honor." The little girl on the bottom bed was very bright for her age, not unlike her adopted "twin" Luna, but Luna lacked Lara's cheeky attitude, which made her seem more innocent. "But Lara they leave for ages and then they come back and they're sad," she said, hugging the sheets to her chest like a younger child would hold a safety blanket. "They're not sad, they're dutiful. They're trained to not show any emotions." Then she let a breath out, feeling empathy for the girl that was raised as her twin sister, "Go to sleep, Luna. Eighteen is years from now, and it's gonna be alright." Luna's POV "Luna Valkryie... Luna Valkryie!" yelled the old government nurse over the speakers. I snapped out of my trance and moved forward in the line. Finally, it was my turn. I had been sketching a girl in my draw pad during the wait; it was that girl I always dreamt of.  I never noticed what her face looked like, it was blurred, just her dark, slightly wavy hair with bright blue tips, and the pale complexion of her skin. I figured I'd draw her from the back, her hair cascading down in blue and black waves. I looked at the drawing once more, it was so realistic it was almost picture-like. I thought it was strange because I can't usually draw something from the top of my head that well. As I lost myself in the fantasy of this mystery girl, the possible recruit behind me cleared her throat impatiently so I closed my pad and walked into the nurse's office with my head bowed. Lara was standing behind me.  She touched my shoulder reassuringly, "Nothing's gonna happen, it's just a little blood." "It's not the blood I'm afraid of," she said as the nurse drew the blood from my arm, which was directly connected to a test tube and attached in the sort of manner you would stab someone if the knife (in this case a needle) adhered to one's skin and drained your blood all by itself. Soon the tube was removed and stored away with all the others. "Claudia Winters!" continued the nurse. I moved away from the line and Lara followed. She had gotten her blood sample taken right before me, but she had stuck around to make sure her sister was okay. "See? It was nothing. And you only have three active abilities, Luna, I doubt many more would be dormant. Maybe two, then you'd have five and you'd still need one more." "Let's hope so." We walked back to the foster home with our arms intertwined. She and I were really close. People would refer to us as "the twins" or ''the Valkyrie girls". We had been raised that way, always fantasizing about being twins, our foster parents would give up and go with it. When we arrived to the home we were greeted by excited younger girls that wanted to know what it was like to get tested for The Chosen. "Did it hurt?" Asked a little blonde seven year old. Lara rolled her eyes, "It's just like getting a vaccine at the doctor's, kid. Now scram before I get'cha!" The girl ran away giggling when Lara took a step forward. Then Lara's smirk became serious and she stared at the other young girls menacingly, lifting an eyebrow, "Scram, I said, all of ya!" I shook my head at her after the little girls were all gone, "Why do you have to act like that?" "Like what?" said Lara nonchalantly. "Like you're all mean and tough." "That's cause I am mean and tough," she smirked,  "Come on sis you can't look this good and be nice," she replied as she slapped her bum and posed. "I'm nice and I look like you," she knew I had a point. Lara and I did look alike even though we weren't truly related. Dirty blonde hair, fit bodies, both about the same height, 5"6. The only difference was that Lara's eyes were blue while mine were hazel, or to be more specific, they were strange, one was bright green, and the other was closer to brown. "Sure, sure, nice," she said, air quoting the word nice. I rolled my eyes at my sister again, "Shut up, I'm a kind person," I said as i punched her arm playfully, "Now come on, let's go eat something, I'm starving." An hour later we were seated in a long table at the dining room with about ten other girls. Mrs. Kaya Kelly was our foster parent while they transitioned into new homes. She had been for four years now. Kaya Kelly was a saint to me. We all called her Mama Kelly or Mama K. She was a sweet, dark skinned woman in her fifties, with curly hair that she always kept up in a bun, warm brown eyes, and a chubby build because she was always cooking and too busy taking care of us to exercise. Mama Kelly was a great cook. She had cooked two turkeys with gravy and mashed potatoes that day. "Mama K, it isn't thanksgiving yet," said one of the orphans. "I know, I know," replied Mrs. Kelly, "but we have to celebrate the twins' birthday." "You know what that means?" said my sister to the other girls. "Caaaaake!" screamed the girls. "You're welcome," added Lara. "You're eating turkey and cake today because I was born." "Lara don't be rude and don't ruin your own surprise!" replied Mrs. Kelly. "But Mama Kelly, you just said-" "Shut up and eat your turkey," the woman cut her off with a sassy scowl and a hand on her hip. "Yes ma'm," said Lara. Some of the younger girls giggled and talked amongst themselves. I spoke loudly through the commotion. "It's a miracle! My sister actually following rules! It must be the end of the world!" I clapped an smiled at the younger girls imitating me. By then most of the girls were laughing and Lara was scowling at me. "Maybe it's cause she's more mature, do you feel more mature?" said Aubrey, the little girl from earlier. "No. can we have the cake now?" replied Lara irritably. Mrs. Kelly sighed, "Fine, I'll go get it, I was hiding it from you girls," she shook her head and disappeared into another room. Then there was a knock, and another one, and another one. I felt as if my heart was caught in my throat, and my nails dug into my thighs in a nervous grip. I knew who that was. Lara and I exchanged a long look, hers was amazement, but mine was fear. Then Lara stepped up to answer the door. The girls had figured she would be chosen, because she had five abilities, all she needed was one more, and I only had three so I didn't have to worry too much. She unlocked the door and turned the knob slowly, probably thinking this was the last time she would see that doorknob in years. Two government officials dressed in black suits entered the home and looked around. "Which one of you is Miss Valkyrie?" said the taller one. "There are two of us, sir," Lara replied since I was too nervous and unable to speak. The guard looked at his touch pad again, "Luna. Luna Valkyrie." Lara gasped, "No... No, you must have it wrong, sir. She only has three." "And four more dormant, this was double checked," He interjected quickly. Across the room, I ran my shaky fingers across my smooth blonde hair, pushing it back nervously. "Four?" I said, "that's seven." "That's correct, young lady. Now pack your things, you need to come with us." "Seven," I whispered, too shocked to move. Lara grabbed my shoulders and helped me up the steps. "Come on, we need to go to our room, sis." I followed, but I wasn't present anymore. She kept talking, but I wasn't listening. "Seven," I repeated like a broken record. *** I remember how cold it was outside as we stepped into the shuttle. The engine of the hovering limousine hummed as we gained altitude, and I stared at the three-floor home from the window, already missing the place. They had only given me five minutes to say a teary goodbye to the girls and hug my sister until they had to separate us. I stayed like that for a while. I don't know how long. We were already zooming past the city and over the shoreline when the girl sitting in front of me talked to me. I turned to look at her. She had light brown skin, straight jet-black hair in a braid, and dark eyes with thick lashes. She was pretty and had a slight Hispanic accent. "You okay, blondie?" I snapped out of my trance, "Yeah... Yeah... I just..." "I miss my family too, but you'll get over it. My older brother sends me e-mails from the camps. He's stationed in Tokyo now." I stared at her with wide eyes, "Tokyo?" "Yeah. Don't be scared, they only send you that far after four years or so." "Right," I replied, as if that made me feel better. "My name's Mia by the way," she said with a warm smile. "Would you two mind shuttin' your trap?" said the slim redhead with a nose piercing who was sitting next to Mia, "I'm trying to listen to some music and I can't hear it over you two yapping." Mia frowned, "Put both headphones on," she said matter-of-factly. "Look, spick. The other one is damaged and I shouldn't even be explaining anythin' to you. So simply shut your hood rat mouth up." My jaw dropped as Mia's face became red and she clenched a fist. "What did you just call me?" she said. "Well I said spick, and hood rat. Which one bothered ya?" the girl replied with a smirk. I saw the next bit in slow motion. Mia pulled her fist back as if to smack the redhead, and the cocky grin in the girl's face was replaced by a look of fear as she shut her eyes and blocked her face with her forearm, expecting the punch to land on her cheek. But the punch never came. Mia struggled to move her fist against a force that was only visible when she tried to struggle past it and little ripples of barely noticeable light moved through the air. "What the hell are you doing, w*********h?!" she yelled. "It wasn't me," The now pale-faced girl replied. Mia looked at me. "I'm sorry, it was a reflex." I said sheepishly. I was used to using the energy to stop the orphans from fighting each other or Lara from hitting anyone. She arched an eyebrow, "Well, you can stop now." "Okay," I replied, "just don't hit her." Mia grunted, "The prick deserves it!" Suddenly a red light lit up above us, and we heard a guard talk through the speakers. A window that only they could see through separated the guards from us. "There are no abilities allowed in here. Stop or we will be forced to release a tranquilizer." He was going to release a gas that would make us too tired to move. I gasped and Mia's fist dropped, "Sorry!" The light turned off and the three of us looked around for the smoky gas, then we all visibly relaxed when we realized there was none. We were silent for the rest of the ride, staring at the ocean as it flowed under us. I must have fallen asleep at some point because I was woken by the sound of the shuttle limo plunging into the sea. Then a black sheet of metal like a secondary window covered the windows so we wouldn't be able to see where we were headed. Not that I would have been able to find my way back underwater anyway. Finally the shuttle started lowering and then it latched on to something. The black window cover also lowered and I noticed we were in some kind of room. It was filled with water, so some mechanism began to drain the water from the room until we could exit the shuttle safely. When we walked out, the bright lights blinded me for a second, and by the time my vision cleared they were ushering us into another room. Before we left the shuttle garage I looked to my side. The wall was glass, and in the chamber on the other side of that glass, which was currently being drained, there was another black shuttle. The wall after that one was also glass and there was another shuttle so on. There seemed to be an infinite amount of them arriving to the base. How big was that place? We walked through a narrow hallway until we arrived to a room with a plate that read "optics". I started to back away, but a guard grabbed my shoulders. "It is a mandatory procedure," he said. I shut my eyes and told myself to calm down. Then I started walking into the room. Inside there were different cubicles with metal contraptions made of leather on the inside. All I had to do was lie down and they would gas me. The doctor would come any minute and burn off the color of my eyes with a laser that would reveal another color around the pupil. Some people in the 2000's and before would have this naturally, but they started operating on babies as soon as they showed it so those people wouldn't be confused with us. A female voice close to me interrupted my thoughts. I remember my first thought was that she sounded sexy and I shook my head as if I could shake the thought off. I turned around. She was sexy, that was for sure. She also had a very pretty smile and those cute vintage glasses from the 2000's. But there was something that grabbed my attention more that those things. The guards hadn't let me take many personal belongings, but I had taken the only think that would ever make me feel normal, my drawing pad. I flipped through it and landed on the last used page. I knew it, I thought. It was the same girl.
