Chapter Three - Infuriating

2839 Words
Emily stood watching as Jenny and Victoria talked about training her. She wasn’t sure exactly as to what they wanted her to be trained in, but it sounded to her as though they wanted her to take Jenny’s place as a beta to Victoria. She shifted uncomfortably as she looked around the room. It was Victoria’s space and had been explained to her that it was referred to as their sanctuary. Although, to Emily, it looked like an office. Granted it was feminine with shades of gold, pink and purple, but all in all, it still looked like an office. “Emily?” Victoria called out, catching her attention and Emily smiled sheepishly as she moved forward. “Yes, sorry was just taking in the beautiful décor,” it wasn’t a lie, but she felt deceitful. “Did your mother have a beta?” Jenny asked her and Emily thought about it and then nodded. “There was a she-wolf, Dora, that was always around my mother. She is married and mated to my father’s beta.” “Alright, so then you understand how it works?” Jenny pushed and Emily frowned. She wasn't stupid, she did understand the workings of a pack. “Yeah, of course, I do,” she remarked, biting back the urge to be sarcastic. “Good, then you know that since you are to be married to Carl, it is now your duty to be the beta to Victoria,” Emily nodded and looked at Jenny. If Jenny had been beta to Victoria, then did that mean she and Carl had been together? Emily wondered about this as she listened to her talk about how to do her duties. She guessed she should’ve been paying more attention and when Victoria began to growl, Emily snapped back to reality. “Are we boring you?” Victoria asked her and Emily blushed at being caught. She quickly shook her head and voiced her thoughts. “No, I apologize, I was just wondering if Jenny is your beta then does that mean she was with Carl or how does it work?” Emily watched as Victoria threw Jenny an annoyed look. “When the beta is mateless, the Luna can choose any beta of her choice,” Victoria explained. “Oh, then I understand,” “Well, then let’s get back to business, my son, Justin, is coming home day after tomorrow so everything needs to be in order. I will leave the two of you to get on with it, as I have an appointment with the pack doctor,” Victoria eased herself out from the pink armchair she had been lounging in and left the sanctuary. Jenny was looking at Emily with an irritated look. “Have you been daydreaming throughout this whole conversation?” she asked her, and Emily bowed her head down in shame. “Not through all of it,” Jenny snorted at her response. “That s**t isn’t gonna fly with Vicky, so I suggest you learn to pay attention,” it wasn’t that Jenny was being rude, she was trying to help her, it was just that the she-wolf seemed- “Ugh! Earth to Emily!” Jenny’s sudden anger made Emily jump. “Ss-sorry,” she stuttered. “Ok, look, Emily, this isn’t rocket science,” “I know,” “Good, now let’s get to work, I hope you can handle it,” Jenny threw her a disgusted look and led them out of the room and into the kitchen. It was early evening and the kitchen smelled of pot roast and Emily’s stomach growled in response. “Wendy!’ Jenny shouted out and Emily watched as the tall she-wolf from earlier came rushing over. “Yes?” “Here is the list for the dishes Vicky wants to be served at her welcome home party for Justin,” Jenny shoved the piece of paper at Wendy, who took it and looked it over. “Make sure you get everything you need tomorrow in preparation,” Jenny instructed, she glanced over at Emily and sneered. “You have to make sure that everything and everyone is up to speed with Vicky’s wishes.” Emily quickly nodded as she wondered if it was part of the duty to be rude. She rushed after her as they left the kitchen and went to the maids quarters. “Thelma!’ Jenny shouted out and this time Emily rolled her eyes, it seemed as though it was her nature to be rude. An elder she-wolf came towards them and she looked at Jenny with great distaste. Emily tried not to laugh as she noticed this. “Justin is coming home earlier than expected, Vicky thinks it is because he is bringing a girl home. Make sure that you have his room aired out and ready for his return, as well as a room ready for his guest,” she instructed. “Do you have any suggestions as to the colors of master Justin’s room?” Thelma questioned and Jenny snorted. “Blue of course,” “And for his guest?” Thelma asked and Emily could see that she was being deliberately infuriating. Jenny abruptly turned to Emily. “Let’s see what you think?” she asked her, and Emily wondered if it was a trick. “Pink?” she suggested, and she saw Thelma nod and smile in approval. Jenny, on the other hand, shook her head. “The pack’s colors are gold and blue,” she looked at Thelma. “Make the guest room gold,” without waiting for a response or for Emily to follow, Jenny left in a huff. Emily looked at Thelma. “Oh oops,” she muttered, and Thelma placed her hand on her shoulder. “Don’t mind her dear, she is a real b***h, I will make the room pink just to piss her off,” Thelma squeezed and released her. “Are you sure that be wise?” as Emily asked this, the she-wolf laughed. “Who cares? I’d enjoy seeing her annoyed that I chose to follow you instead of her,” Thelma left her and went back to the others and Emily wondered what she should do now since Jenny had left her stranded.   It was getting late as Emily wandered around the castle, she was slowly beginning to get to know the place, despite its size, she managed to figure it all out. Carl had said that he would catch up with her later and she hadn’t seen him. In fact, she hadn’t seen anyone around. She found herself standing in front of Jeffery’s office and she peeked inside. He was sitting at his desk, working on something. She knocked on the open door and when he looked up, he smiled. “Come in, Emily,” she entered the room and walked over to his desk. She saw that he had been working on a word puzzle and she smiled at this. “Interesting,” she said, and he chuckled. “I enjoy the challenge,” he explained with amusement. “Everything alright?” he asked her. “If I may?” “Speak your mind,” “I don’t like Jenny,” Emily confessed, and Jeffery doubled over as he laughed. “What’s to like?” Peter declared as he spoke up and Emily jumped in surprise. She looked over her shoulder and saw him lounging on the couch. She blushed as she had thought she was alone with Jeffery. Her cheeks red and her embarrassed posture made Jeffery and Peter howl with laughter. “What’s so funny?” Carl asked as he entered the room and Emily wished she could disappear. At seeing her discomfort, Carl moved towards her and growled at Jeffery and Peter. They, however, were unfazed by his warning growl and continued to laugh. Emily realizing the silliness of the situation joined in and giggled. “What is so funny?” Carl asked again, which seemed to rejuvenate their laughter. He growled out again and exited the room. Emily sobered as the room fell silent. Peter got up and closed the door, turning back to look at her and Jeffery, he repeated his earlier question. “Seriously though, what’s to like?” “Now, now, let’s not speak of my mates’ best friend in such a manner,” the three of them burst out laughing and Emily felt right at home. Peter gazed over at her and nodded. “What?” she asked him, and he smiled. “You and I are going to be best friends,” Emily agreed. She looked over at Jeffery who was smiling approvingly, and she knew that she would be close to the alpha as well. “Now off you go, I’m busy,” Jeffrey teased as he dismissed them. Emily walked with Peter out of the office and he escorted her back to Carl’s quarters. When they stopped at the door, he gave her a quick hug. “Goodnight, Emily,” “Goodnight, Peter,” she watched him leave and she entered the room. She spotted her bag on the bed and felt relief at seeing it. Going through it she took out her nighties and looked around the room. It wasn’t big, it held the king-sized bed, which looked like heaven, a closet, and in the far corner was a desk with a small bookshelf. She also spotted a door and went over to it. She slowly opened the door and was impressed to see that it was a bathroom. She went back to her bag and retrieved her toiletries. Going back into the bathroom, she undressed and climbed into the shower. The water was warm and relaxing over her tense body and she hummed a song as she did her thing. When she was done, she carefully stepped out of the shower and looked around. She thought she had heard someone, but she was alone. Shrugging it off as a case of nerves, she dried herself and pulled on her nightdress. She continued to hum the song as she went back into the bedroom. Opening the closet, she could see male clothing and she remembered that this was, in fact, Carl’s room. She quickly unpacked her bag and slipped into bed. She wanted to be fast asleep when he came to bed. She wasn’t going to face him on their first night in the same bed together. Emily worried she was too emotional to fall asleep but as she closed her eyes, sleep came easily.   Emily woke up feeling as though someone or something was pinning her down. As she tried to sit up, she heard a soft snore, looking down, she saw the cause. Carl had his head rested on her chest and his arm thrown over her waist. He was deep in sleep as he snored softly. Emily laid back down and wondered what she should do. Mate! Her wolf cried out and Emily smiled. Although somewhat uncomfortable, she liked having him so near her, touching her and being unaware of his actions made her feel excited and aroused. “Stop moving,” he mumbled, and Emily gasped in surprise. “I thought you were asleep,” “I was until you started moving,” Emily kept quiet and waited for him to get off her, when he didn’t and she realized he had gone back to sleep, she carefully ran her fingers through his hair. It was slightly spikey as it was cut short but starting to grow out. He moaned in his sleep and for a moment she froze. He tensed, holding her tighter and then he relaxed. Emily closed her eyes and breathed in his cherry scent. As she felt herself drifting off, a loud banging sound came from the door. Carl growled as he got up, stamping to the door, he threw it open. “What?” he shouted. “Rise and shine sleepyhead,” Emily heard Jenny sing out and she cringed. The she-wolf was infuriating. Emily giggled as she thought about Thelma. “What do you want Jenny?” Carl snapped as he came back into the room. Jenny took a step inside and looked over at Emily. “You are late,” she announced, and Emily frowned. Carl had gotten back into bed and curled himself up against her as he had before. “Late for what?” Emily asked unsure of what she was supposed to be doing this morning. Carl grunted unhappily as he pressed his face closer to her chest. “Meet me in the kitchen in half an hour,” Jenny said and then added, “Please,” and with that, she left, closing the door behind her. Emily looked down at Carl, who was now looking up at her. “Mmm, morning my little mate,” he whispered, and Emily smiled shyly at him. He leaned up and claimed her lips in a sweet gentle kiss. Emily immediately felt her whole body react to his kiss and she whimpered against his lips. He made a trail of soft feather-light kisses from her lips to her ear. “You are tempting,” he whispered, and shudders of excitement ran up her spine. When he got up and left her, she felt the morning chill and longed for his warmth once again. As he neared the bathroom door, he turned and winked at her. “Join me?” he questioned, and Emily blushed, quickly shaking her head to which he chuckled and went into the bathroom. He hadn’t closed the door and she could hear the water going on in the shower. She jumped out of bed and hurriedly got dressed. She pulled on a pair of denim and a white halter neck top. She left the room and made her way to the kitchen. She was still shaken by the morning events when she bumped into Peter. “In a hurry?” he asked playfully, and she grinned at him. “Sort of,” “Running away or running too?” “Both,” they laughed, and he walked into the kitchen with her. Jenny spun around at hearing them and shot Peter a dirty look before addressing Emily. “As a beta, you need to be on top of things, especially when planning an event. Sleeping in isn’t going to cut it,” Peter snorted at Jenny’s words and smiled apologetically to Emily before leaving them to get his breakfast. “I didn’t realize,” Emily started but Jenny interrupted her. “Vicky is pregnant and in need of our help, as beta, it is your responsibility to give her one hundred perfect, do you understand?” “Yes, Jenny, I understand,” “Good, now, I’ve already confirmed the menu with Wendy and arranged for the items she needs to be collected,” Emily nodded. “Thelma has already opened up and preparing Justin’s room and she has someone working on the guest bedroom,” Emily wondered what she was needed for if Jenny had already taken care of everything. “And in case your wondering, these are the things you should’ve been doing instead of laying around,” Jenny turned away from her and Emily rolled her eyes at her back. She didn’t like Jenny nor her attitude. She noticed Peter was watching and he mimicked her as he rolled his eyes at Jenny. Emily giggled and made her way over to him. “Is she always like this?” Emily asked him quietly. “Basically, except when Carl is around, then she is a delightful angel,” Emily frowned at his words and was just about to question him when Jenny shot her an irritated look. “Come on Emily, stop standing around, we have much to do,” Jenny walked out of the kitchen and Emily rushed after her. She nearly ran into her as she had stopped just outside the door. “What the h-” “Good morning,” Victoria greeted her and Jenny. “Morning Luna,” Emily bowed her head and noticed Jenny doing the same. “Are we all set for tomorrow?” “Still some small details to attend too but otherwise everything is on track,” Jenny offered. Victoria smiled warmly at her and then turned to Emily. “In that case, Emily would you join me in my sanctuary for breakfast?” “I’d love too,”
