Prologue
"You've disappointed me for the last time. Get out! Get out of this house! You're no son of mine! "
Ryan clenched both his hands and turned to pack his belongings. He'd always known that this would happen. He really didn't know why he tried to please his father. Sighing heavily, he gave his tearful mother a brief hug and started packing his things.
His mother went out for a moment and returned. "Ryan, whatever your father said, you're still my son." She said as she sat on his bed, her jewelry box and a brown envelope in hand. "This is too sudden. I can't give you more than this. But I will transfer some money to your account as soon as possible. "
Ryan squeezed his mother's knees. "No mom, I don't need it. I've known for sometime that this would happen. Since I was in my first year of high school, really. So I'm prepared. I have savings and investments, don't worry. Besides, as soon as I'm out of this house, I'm closing my account that is connected here. Don't worry about me, mom. Save your jewelries for Kate and Jared's wife."
"But… at least accept the money. What you had should be saved for emergency. The money here should last you at least six months." Ryan sighed and accepted the envelope. "Okay mom, okay. I made some very sound investments so I could go to a university of my choice and live comfortably until I graduated. Don't be angry with dad. He just couldn't take anymore failure. "
He remembered how his father berated him for getting into the science program when he had specifically told him to get the social program in preparation of being a lawyer. It's no wonder that after three years of trying and failing to get to the law school his father wanted, he'd gotten the boot. What his father didn't know, he had saved all his allowance and invested it on his friends, so he had a suite, shares on a successful hotel chain, an up and coming software and gaming company, even on a small hospital in a booming city. He's actually quite wealthy on his own, especially because all the profits were reinvested immediately. He even still had a box of gold coins in the bank's safe deposit box.
Packing just the sentimental things, he hugged his mom one last time and go to his bank to close his allowances account, transfering the balance to his other account and return the credit card for that account, then he called his best friend. "Hey James. " "Ryan, brother, I was just going to call you. Bro, tell me what do you think of adding a shopping mall to the hotel? The space beside Grand Suites Jogja had just opened. " His depressed mode changed to excitement. "Really?! That's great! How much for them?" James chuckled through the phone. He knew that they share excitements in developing the hotels under RDJ groups. "I'm going to call Darrell and set up a meeting to talk about this." James said. "Ah, right. James, is my suite in Prescott's available? My dad kicked me out. " Prescott's was their first hotel, originally owned by James' family that fallen into hard times when his parents passed away in an airplane accident. Ryan and Darrell, his best friends, sunk money to it and helped James back to his feet. That was the beginning of their RDJ group. Now, the 34th floor of Prescott's Hotel and Apartments became RDJ Investment & Management's Head Office while each of the three maintained a suit in the penthouse, renting it out when they're not there.
"Yeah, it's unoccupied. What happened? " "Just the usual. I failed to get to the law school he wanted for the last time. " James sighed in sympathy. "How's your mom? " "She took it hard, but at least she didn't disown me. My dad disowned me. So I think I'll be looking for a new last name" "I don't know why he didn't just let you take business course. You're sharp about investment. " "Me neither. So my suite there is not occupied?" "Nope, I'll tell them that you're on your way. See you at Prescott's" Ending the call, he walked out of the private room the bank had allowed him to use and thought to have lunch before driving the three hours journey to Surabaya.
