Chapter 1: A Dark Figure Emerges
Tobias Lance walked alone down one of the most dangerous streets in New York, situated in the infamous city of Bludhaven. He wore a dark hoodie, hands in his pockets, hood covering his face. In his right pocket was an expensive switchblade knife that he had stolen weeks before. Lance carefully stalked the streets, stopping to look at every person who crossed his line of sight. He finally stopped near an alleyway and waited in a dark corner. A few minutes later, an expensive-looking car stopped near the young delinquent. A blonde, middle-aged man in a business suit exited the back of the car. Arrogance dripped from his gait. He stopped to fix the collar of his expensive shirt and walked straight into the alley. Tobias followed. Taking notice, the man turned around without hesitation, and pulled out a g*n, pointing it at the hooded figure, his hand visibly trembling, "Are you my contact?" Tobias lowered his hood slowly to reveal a young adult, around age twenty-five, with blue eyes and long dark hair pulled back into a ponytail, he had a scar on his neck, as if someone had tried to stab him right in the carotid artery, and s***h across his cheek. He flashed a spiteful smile, indifferent to the fact that he was at gunpoint, "Yes, sir, I go by Slayer. Do you have my package?" The man breathed a sigh of relief and put his g*n away. He reached into a small suitcase, pulling out a yellow envelope. Tobias opened the envelope and pulled out a wad of money, inspecting it, "One thousand dollars, in hundred dollar bills, you really came through. When do you need the job done?" The blonde man's eyes darted around nervously. He spoke quickly, wanting the suspicious meeting to be over with, "Before the 29th, or as soon as possible." Tobias had been about to say, "No problem," when a figure in an all-black hooded ninja suit landed in between both men and threw something at the businessman's neck. The man pulled the object out of his skin with a wince to learn that it was a small dart. Suddenly his vision blurred, and his legs started wobbling as he passed out, a dazed and confused look on his face. Startled, Tobias grabbed the money and ran, but the mysterious attacker had pulled out a stick that became longer on each end at the click of a button until it was the size of a staff. It hit Tobias right in the shin, making him trip over the staff and land with a grunt of pain, holding his wounded leg. Tobias's palms started to sweat, especially when he noticed that his attacker had two katanas strapped to his back. He wished he had brought his g*n, a switchblade wasn't going to save him from this. "What do you want? I'll give you the money, just don't kill me," he begged. The ninja had an amused expression on his eyes, as if he were smiling, "I'm not here for your money," he answered in a deep, gruff voice, "I want you to hand yourself over to the police." Tobias got up slowly, "Hand myself over?" The figure in black nodded. "Never," he tried to take a swing at the person's face, but the ninja dodged the punch easily and grabbed the young man's arm, pinning it behind his back. Tobias grunted in pain, "They always say the same thing," said his attacker. The young man's arm was bent unnaturally, and whoever this person was, was pinning it harder with each passing second. "How'd you like to go to jail with a broken arm?" Tobias's voice expressed intense pain, "Please, stop, I'll do it! I'll turn myself in." The person in the black ninja suit softened his hold on his arm, and said, "Make sure you confess to everything or I will find you, and you'll have more than a broken arm. Trust me, I keep my promises." The sound of police sirens could be heard from afar. The ninja pulled out a dart as the one that had knocked the wealthy businessman out and stuck it in the back of Tobias's neck. When the police got there, both Tobias and his customer were passed out next to each other in the alleyway. An anonymous tip had led them there. One of them picked up the envelope full of money and informed the others that the meeting must have been some kind of d**g deal, but a detective took a look at the rest of the documents. They were pictures and information on the same man. He shook his head, "This was no d**g deal, he was calling out a hit, employing an assassin for hire. Please find this man, Emmanuel Dawson," he said as he handed the picture to another officer, "find out why someone would want him dead." Then he ordered the rest to find the target of the attempted murder and put him in protective custody. As for Tobias, and the man about to hire him, Frank Oppenheimer, a state senator, they were both escorted to a paramedics van where, after hooking them to an IV for an hour, they'd wake up in handcuffs, all evidence of the attempted assassination already in the hands of the police chief. Sitting in the rooftop of one of the buildings next to the alley, the figure in black let out a satisfied sigh and took off a mask which only left the eyes in view, then pulled down the dark hood that shaded them to reveal the face of a beautiful young woman with long, sleek, chestnut-colored hair and a couple of freckles adorning her face. Her hazel eyes were full of pride and accomplishment.  That is until her phone rang. She answered with a disinterested tone of voice, "Yes?" "Good evening, I am a lawyer who used to work for Salvatore Faye, I need to speak with a young woman named Jada Skylar Faye. It is an important matter." Jada furrowed her eyebrows, "This is she." "I am sorry to be the bearer of such terrible news, but Mr. Faye has passed away. Since you are one of the beneficiaries in his will, I will need an appointment with you to discuss what he has left you, and I am sorry for your loss. My condolences." Jada's free hand curled into a punch, knuckles white, and her whole body felt tense, "It's okay, I didn't know him that well. I'll call you back to settle an appointment. Thank you for notifying me." She hung up. Jada looked up at the sky. The stars were barely visible. She let out a long breath, and a single tear betrayed her, "Goodbye, dad."
