Chapter 1
The morning sun is oblivious and radiant that Carlotta is so eager to water her plants sitting in grandeur outside their porch. The lady made her plans for today last night after she went through their seemingly dark basement. As the day will start, she wanted to water the plants for them to stay and live longer than her in a very ironic way. After preparing their breakfast, Carlotta did wake her husband and son to start their usual normal day. Her husband to work and son to school which she is very proud as a mother. Their lifestyle might not be in an upper level of life but contentment is all they have—a true value of respect and hard work. The thing she admires about plants is that they are full of life when the Sun is shining and striking them gracefully. Add a sprinkle of water and they can make a life. She wished before to have someone who she can share her adoration to the plants but not lucky enough to begin with. Her husband is a hard working man with his strict virtues and principle while her son is an athletic one. With these two male species she's living with, she'd dropped her hopes but that didn't stop her to continue her passion with the plants. To her usual checkered long sleeves and a pair of jeans, she is someone that people wouldn't think of just going to water her plants but going somewhere. Carlotta always have her physical appearance to be decent at all times. It was then before she started to pour the first drops of water, Leo, or Leonard, exited the main door on his well-ironed uniform bids her goodbye. "Just enjoy and don't get too worked up, honey." She bids before waving to her son. Leo only gave her a quick response of 'Okay.' before dashing out to the busy street. As Leo's figure disappears through the sight, Carlotta started to water her plants to give them another more life for this day forward. She hums quietly as the water drips arrogantly against the leaves of each every plant and flowers she's watering. The heating sun started to warm her body causing her to slightly look at the neighborhood when a sudden figure came to her sight. Pale skin, raven black hair and taunting pair of eyes gracefully walking down the pavement as if he's searching for something or someone. She couldn't believe her eyes when she realizes that these feminine features belong to a boy. Must have taken good care. She thought. For once in her life, she wanted to have this kind of beauty to be in her future daughter-in-law. Who wouldn't want this kind of beauty to be a part of their genes? "I am lost." She heard a despair in his soothing yet calming voice. He's an angel. Carlotta remarks. She pauses for a while and tempted to approach him to know what is going on. Being an elder means she can be a big help to this lost boy. Aerine Jade supposedly be on his way to school when his father called him for a favor this morning. His only problem was he doesn't know how to drive his own car and without his driver, he can't go anywhere but only to sit inside of his fancy car. He could've asked for help to his nanny or Nana Marietta, as she calls, however, the old lady wasn't available due to upcoming celebration for his parents anniversary. His father sent him a message to what kind of favor he was asking and included the address onto it which is not really helpful to Aerine because he knows for a fact that he can't follow it correctly but to follow his guts and assumptions. A part of him that he wanted to improve is his confidence. Being confident will lead you to a new different level of yourself from what you are now. This is something that is occupying his mind ever since he planned to auditioned for their school drama club where his aunt is the teacher and instructor. One good trait that Aerine has is not using his family name to take any advantages-be it in the school nor to anyone and anywhere. Born with a golden spoon on his mouth, his parents never failed to educate him and nurture him the humble way and to appreciate every single thing that surrounds him especially when it comes to money and power. Not only his parents educated him about it but also his grand parents who he lived with for two years when his both parents had to work overseas. This morning's favor is a bit of a challenge to him not knowing how to pull it off from his plans. He is supposed to be in the school an hour ago and reading the school paper, making comments to no one in particular while listening to the deafening silence of the surroundings. He tried calling his father's driver, Mr. Mendrez, to ask for the specific location of his destination however, the said driver cannot be reached at the moment—probably taking his breakfast or whatever he's doing after driving his father to the office. He also did try calling his mother, Lady Ruby Rose, but to his unfortunate hopes, she's busy at this early of the morning. If he is following correctly the instructions given to him, he is sure that it is somewhere down this road and one of the houses. Aerine checks his phone one more time and carefully reads the message. 'Once you arrived at the District 16, turn left then you'll see a little garden poking at the pathway. That's Mr. Navarro's residence. Thank you, precious.' How he wished his father to be more specific by giving the complete address to him and he will not be having this hard time of finding his father's employee's residence. When he arrived at District 16, he took a quick left turn before trying to picture in his mind of a little garden poking at the pathway. Along the street, Aerine was like a lost kid in an amusement park-checking every direction and every houses for a garden but the problem is he doesn't know what kind garden it is. Is it a flower garden or something different from the ordinary family garden? "Hey. Are you alright?" Aerine startled at the sudden question in front of him. He was in deep thoughts that he didn't feel the presence of another person approaching him. After putting his self back together, Aerine greeted the lady and politely answered her question. "I'm sorry. I am lost." He answered as embarrassment reigns over him. Under the burning sun and weather, his pale face started to turn to a red ball. Due to the sudden heat, the thing that he hates the most starting to show off. He wanted to try sports to know his limits but with this condition, he can't stand the heat for too long. Despite of his clothes being the protection from the sun, the heat is still crawling inside of his skin that causing him more irritation. As for Carlotta, examining this young lad in front of her is more interesting than what she wanted to do in the first place like she forgot why she's out in the streets. His once pale face is now getting redder and amusement came first to her sight before the realization hits her. "I can help you with it, sweetie. But are you sure you are fine? You're getting warmer just by looking at it." She may sounded creepy but Aerine manages to look through her words of worry. Carlotta tilted her head sideways to see clearer what she is looking at this moment. Her curiosity wants to be fed with ideas and thoughts storming her mind. How can you be this beautiful? Why are you in this kind of form? How well do you take care of yourself?  Can you tell me how can you— "I don't want to bother you, ma'am." In his discomfort of embarrassment, Aerine only wanted to look relaxed and can get through this day without being a helpless kid. A small smile drew on Carlotta's lips as she was pleased with the boy's answer. "I am here to help. " "Well, thank you, ma'am." "Drop the formalities, sweetie. Carlotta is my name." "Sorry about that, ma'am—I mean, Carlotta." He quickly draws. Before adding more of the conversation with unreliable thoughts, he explained to her all the details of his objective for today. "I was asked to deliver the documents for Mr. Navarro but I couldn't follow the directions sent to me." And this heat isn't helping me at all. He wanted to add but repressed himself. Even if she didn't hear what the young boy was trying to add, she can fully understands what is going on—this heat is irritating him. Before she come up with an invitation, her mouth already proposes it without her knowing. "Let's get inside our house first. The weather isn't fancy to start with." She said then added, "Follow me, sweetie." Tilting her head towards the entrance of their humble home. As Aerine wanted to get away from the burning heat of the sun, his mind is debating whether to follow the lady or not out of courtesy. He doesn't want to invade someone else's home be it a stranger or not. Traditionally, when an invitation was offered, he must accept it with full respect and to pay kindness to whomever invited him. In this case, it wasn't an invitation but more like an order to follow the lady who happened to notice him in the midst of nowhere then offering help to finish his task. Aerine follows Carlotta keeping his distance to her. To his surprise, a little garden was poking out in the street with those flowers and unknown grass. As they are making a turn entering the gated house, Aerine flashes an astonishment when his eyes landed on the beautiful and well-groomed bush of roses. There are reds and whites across the little garden surrounded with little trees and other bushes and flowers, too. He is the kind of person that gets fascinated with things that define beauty in all aspects and ways, be it a small thing or big ones. Flowers are rarely appreciated in this side of him because he rarely see one in this magnificent arrangement. The landscaping of the garden is mesmerizing and truly a beautiful scenery as the dawn breaks in, sun rising to sky and at sunset. He swears that this garden can illuminate the hazy, orangey skies in the sunset with the enough lighting. He still in awe when Carlotta halted and draws a big smile on her thin lips. She was proud of herself. This stranger is being fascinated by her works. "They say that when someone gives you a red rose, they adore you and admire you." Carlotta said as Aerine's eyes landed on the red roses. She quickly fished out her cutter from her back pocket before picking the most red and beautiful rose among the rest. "Red rose also stands for passion, true love, romance and desire." She added. Aerine exclaimed in wonder as Carlotta starts explaining to him what does this flower means. "It is beautiful." Carlotta, upon hearing those words even if those were meant for the flowers, felt proud and happy. Happiness that can be felt from a stranger is something that she cannot fathomed. "You are beautiful, too, sweetie. Here." She said before handing Aerine the rose she carefully picked from the bush. His yet and delicate hand reaches the flower with a smile plastered on his face although the compliment lingers between them, Aerine wasn't fond of compliments but gets shy and embarrassed whenever he gets one but this one is genuine and he can see it through her eyes—eyes that are very familiar. He is sure he'd seen it before onto someone but can't quite point it out who and when and where. Before his mind wanders off, Aerine responded with a thank you to Carlotta. Carlotta, on the other hand, invited Aerine to their humble porch where a single chair and an old bench are sitting in an opposite directions. When she is certain that the bench is clean, she offered Aerine a sit that the boy gladly accepted with the rose on his both hands. They let the silence took over for a couple of minutes, letting the warm breeze touches their skins and watching the plants dance through the gentle air. Aerine had this kind of moment before with a stranger. The funny thing about it is that this woman he is with and that stranger had a resemblance—their eyes. As this thought crosses his mind, a stiff of joy and excitement arises onto him, wishing he could meet him again and probably ask for his name. "So, about my help that I offered, sweetie, this Mr. Navarro's residence? What is his first name? I might know him." Carlotta inquires to break the growing silence between them. Navarro is not a usual family name in this neighborhood they have been residing for over 30 years. In fact, District 16 is well-known as the Navarro District. The city, with 20 districts consisting of it, is sitting next to the vast sea of the Eastern Coast—with a totality of over 200,000 population, economy has not been a problem to it. Majority of the population are well-known businessmen. As the businesses skyrocketed at the top, more opportunities are being opened. Time is ticking. Aerine wonders what Carlotta asked. Could there be any Mr. Navarro in this District? Confusion and wonder should've occupied him more but he blurted out, "Mr. Franco Navarro." before that could have happened. It must've been the fate's call to have these two individuals to meet in the first place. A destiny. It is how funny Carlotta's mind works. She might look a classy lady physically but a crazy woman she is inside. Just like a child. A chuckle out of nowhere might freak out Aerine so Carlotta braced herself and smiled. "That's my husband." "Oh." Was the only thing Aerine mutters. "There are other Navarro families in this District, especially around the neighborhood. I think you're confused about what I asked earlier." She explains with a small cackle. "My husband already left an hour ago and my son a couple of minutes ago. You probably saw him but didn't notice. Where are you studying? Leo goes to this university near the capital. I just don't quite—" "CaSU?" Aerine interrupted. Hoping she will understand it but her face shows confusion. "Cathalina Suri University." He cleared. "Yes, yes that is! You attend there, too?" "I do." He answers politely. "CaSU... So that's what you call it? I can never really say that university's name." She jokes making her laugh. Lines on the edges of both her eyes became visible. Age has been consuming her over the past years yet beauty and youth still embracing her. His mother, too, have the same beauty and youth. Despite of their difference in status and class, both women have their own dignity radiating with youth around them. Comparing her to his mother, Carlotta has more liveliness in her voice while his mother has the always worried one. "Anyway, I don't want to take your time too much, sweetie. Searching for our address had consumed it already. Is there anything that you want from my husband?" Aerine quickly unlatched his backpack and fished out the folder his father asked him to hand over to Mr. Navarro. The folder was encased in a clear envelope with a piece of paper glued onto it with Mr. Navarro's name written on it. "Oh my. Your father must've been busy to send you here in person instead." Carlotta said once the envelope was in her keeps. Aerine only smiles at her while zipping his bag before latching it back to his shoulders. "He left it on his way to his work and no one is available to deliver but only me." "Such an angel. Thank you for this. I will surely let Mr. Navarro knows about it." Blush creeps on Aerine's face as compliments rang on his ear. "That's okay, ma'am. Besides, District 16 is on the way to school, too." Once she heard the formality again, instead of waving it off, she just smiles it off and nods her head. "I really wish we can spend more time or offer you a dessert for thanking your kindness, sweetie, but I'm afraid you'll be running late." "I will surely take your offer next time, ma'am. And time really is running fast. I will be heading out." He said in the most apologetic tone he could as he stands up from the chair. The warmth of the morning sun is increasingly growing warmer and he doesn't want to get burned by it with staying more time in this humble residence. Carlotta can see him through and the worry on Aerine's face is saying it all—burning sun. "Let me get something to protect you from the sun, okay?" She offered. As much as he wanted to disagree with Carlotta, the lady was gone in mere seconds before his sight. He doesn't feel good when he knows that he is being burden to someone else. In this case, being transparent to Carlotta was not a good thing. What if she thinks that I am a vulnerable boy? Negative thinking is one of his habits. Some of these thoughts are assumptions only while some are reality. This what if, as he deducted, is a reality. His mind took him far away from his real state that he didn't even notice Carlotta's presence next to her. It was a folded umbrella, a black one, on her hand handing to poor Aerine. "You really don't—" "Shhh, sweetie. Atleast take it as a token of my gratitude for what you did today. I will get upset if you don't take it." There's a strain of despair on her tone yet the sternness covering it up to let Aerine know that she is politely thankful and worried about him. To take down an offer is disrespectful if the person offering is older than you and true to their intentions so Aerine accepts the umbrella. At last, his what if is not a reality after all but an assumption.
