BUILDING A CASTLE
In the modern flat high above the bustling city streets, the living room was a canvas of soft grays and vibrant pops of color from various toys scattered about. The walls, decorated with decals of cartoon characters, seemed to echo with the light-hearted energy emanating from within. Lily, a ten-year-old with a contagious smile, was perched on a fluffy white bean bag, her small hands expertly maneuvering a set of brightly colored building blocks. Her brother, Tom, a thoughtful seventeen-year-old, lounged on a sleek, gray sofa, his laptop open but forgotten as he watched Lily with an amused expression. "Look, Tom!" Lily exclaimed, her voice bubbling with enthusiasm. "I'm building a castle, and it's going to have the tallest towers ever!" Her eyes, bright with imagination, darted between the blocks and Tom's face, seeking approval. Tom closed his laptop and moved to sit closer to her on the carpet. "That sounds amazing, Lil. But don't you think a giant moat would make it even cooler?" he suggested his voice a blend of brotherly warmth and playful challenge. Lily's face lit up at the idea. "Yes! And we can have a drawbridge and crocodiles in the water to keep out the bad guys!" Her hands flew faster, assembling the new additions with a concentration that furrowed her petite brow. The afternoon sun streamed through the large windows, casting playful shadows over the siblings as they built the castle together. The city noise faded into a distant hum, irrelevant to the world they were creating on the living room floor. "Hey, Tom," Lily paused, her expression shifting to one of curiosity. "Do you think we could live in a castle like this one day?" Tom chuckled, ruffling her hair affectionately. "Maybe one day, Lily. But I think this flat is pretty cool for now. We've got everything we need, right?" Lily nodded, her smile returning as she placed another block on the castle. "Yeah, you're right. Plus, we have each other!" She leaned against him slightly, her small frame fitting perfectly beside his. Tom wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her into a gentle side hug. "Exactly, Lil. And that's the best part." They continued building, laughter, and chatter filling the room as the sun dipped lower, bathing the flat in a warm, comforting glow. Here, in their high-rise haven, with blocks and dreams laid out before them, Lily and Tom had all they needed—a sense of home, creativity, and each other's company. As they added the final pieces to the castle, Lily placed a small, blue block at the very top, declaring it the jewel in the crown. "This is the best castle ever," she said, her tone filled with pride. Tom nodded in agreement, his eyes reflecting the colors of the sunset streaming through the window. "Mom and Dad would have loved to see this, don't you think?" he asked softly, the memory of their parents lingering in the air like a silent melody. Lily's expression softened, a mix of sadness and fondness passing through her eyes. "Yeah, Mom would have probably helped us build an even bigger garden around it, and Dad would have tried to make it light up like his gadgets." Tom smiled at the thought, a gentle sigh escaping him. "Yeah, he was always tinkering with something, wasn't he?" He glanced at Lily, noticing how her smile wavered as she nodded. "I miss them," Lily whispered, almost hesitant to break the peace that surrounded them. "I miss them too," Tom replied, pulling her close. "But you know, they're always with us, Lil. Every time we build something cool like this or when I help you with your math homework like Mom used to." Lily leaned into Tom, her head resting against his shoulder. "Do you think they can see us? Like, from up above?" Her voice was curious, hopeful. "I like to think they can," Tom said, looking out the window at the city lights beginning to twinkle like distant stars. "And I bet they're super proud of everything we're doing, especially how brave and smart you are." Lily smiled, a little more brightly this time. "And how you always look after me," she added, squeezing his hand. They sat together in silence for a moment, watching the colors of the sky change as the evening deepened. The castle between them stood tall and proud, a fortress of their shared creativity and a symbol of the memories they cherished. "Let's keep making them proud, okay?" Tom said his voice firm with resolve. Lily nodded, her youthful face determined. "Okay." And with that promise hanging in the air, they began to plan their next great build. As the stars appeared one by one, the night wrapped around them like a soft blanket, their laughter and plans for the future ensuring that the presence of their parents felt reassuringly close, a guiding force in their lives. The clock ticked softly in the background, marking the passage of time in the cozy flat. As the night deepened, Lily's yawns became more frequent, her eyelids fluttering against the pull of sleep. "Looks like someone's getting sleepy," Tom observed, his voice gentle as he watched his sister try to stifle another yawn. "I'm not sleepy," Lily protested weakly, though her eyes told a different story. She rubbed them with the back of her hand, her energy waning. Tom chuckled softly. "Okay, not sleepy, just... incredibly relaxed," he teased, standing and stretching his arms above his head. "How about we get you ready for bed? We can read a bit of that story we started last night." Lily's initial reluctance faded at the mention of the story. "Can we read two chapters tonight?" she bargained, her voice hopeful. "Two chapters, huh?" Tom pretended to consider her request seriously. "Alright, but only if you brush your teeth really well." "Deal!" Lily jumped up, her fatigue momentarily forgotten, and dashed into the bathroom. Tom followed, leaning against the doorway as he watched her meticulously brush her teeth, a habit ingrained by their mother. Once she finished, Tom helped her into her pajamas—a set covered in cartoon astronauts and stars. "Ready for lift-off to dreamland?" he joked, as Lily giggled and nodded. Together, they returned to her bedroom, a cozy space with walls adorned in soft pinks and whites, where plush toys lined the shelves and a small lamp cast a warm, inviting glow. Tom tucked her into bed, the blankets pulled up to her chin and settled beside her with the book they had been reading together. As he read, Lily's eyes gradually grew heavier, her earlier burst of energy fading with each page turned. Her breathing slowed, and by the time Tom quietly closed the book on the second chapter, she was sound asleep, her chest rising and falling in peaceful rhythms. Tom watched her for a moment, the soft light illuminating her peaceful face. He felt a surge of protective warmth, a silent vow to always be there, to fill their parents' shoes as best he could. Gently, he brushed a curl from her forehead and whispered, "Goodnight, Lil," his voice barely audible. He clicked off the lamp and stood, glancing around the room filled with the quiet sounds of sleep. With a contented sigh, he left the door ajar, the soft hallway light casting a sliver of illumination across the plush carpet. As he retreated to his own room, the memories of the day—a day of laughter, creativity, and shared memories—wrapped around him like the night sky outside, full of stars and promises. He knew that no matter what, they would face the future together, with the spirit of their parents guiding them from above.
