Chapter 1 - Bitter taste of the truth
Bitter taste of the truth Elizabeth “It’s quite cold out here for a girl like you,”  I turned around to see King Jeorne standing behind me. Did he follow me? I leaned against the railway. I gulped. I flashed him a smile. Hoping that it would conceal the fear in my guts. He looked liked an aged version of Jehaerys. At first, his eyes were cast to the dusty earthen floor and then he seemed to suddenly realize he was at his destination, at our rendezvous. He lifted his head. His face had the same structure as Jehaerys’, high cheekbones and symmetrical. His eyes are a deep shade of grey, almost white, and fair skin. He was still slender despite his years, toned and not at all stooped.  “Your majesty,” I mumble, but I did not bow nor curtsey. He smiles a little, and it doesn’t reach his eyes. He saw the shock register on my face before I could hide it. A small smile played on his lips, I guess he gets that a lot. “What are you doing here alone, my lady?” he said and walked closer to me. Close enough that he could just grab me and throw me on the balcony. I didn’t step backward. I will never give him that satisfaction that I am afraid of him. After what he just did to those Galapornean people. Enslaving the children, r****g the girls and force them to work in a brothel. His ego is too big enough. He thinks everyone fears him. I will never give him that, even if he put a knife against my neck. “I just need to breath fresh air,” I said. “Why is that?” he asked. “Does your intended suffocates you?” I shake my head. “No. I just had too much to drink, I guess.” I said. I turned to look at him, “Did you follow me here?” I said. His eyes widened at my question. He probably didn’t expect me to ask him right away.  “I actually didn’t. Believe it or not, I was also seeking fresh air to breathe,” he responded. “Is someone suffocating you inside, your majesty?” I returned his question with the same amount of sarcasm. He smirked. “I just remember someone,” he said in a low voice. He didn’t sound like the man who slaughtered the galapornean innocent people. “My daughter,” he murmurs, “You have a daughter?” I said. Surprised was clear in my voice. I thought Jehaerys was an only child. “Yes. I had a daughter. She was Jehaerys’ twin sister. Unlike her brother, she has red hair. My wife used to call her ‘touch by fire’. Jehaerys might be my pride, but she was my joy. She was everyone’s joy. I’ve never seen someone smile contagiously, only her.” he mutters, looking at the full moon in the sky. “What happened to her?” I find myself wanting to know about his daughter. Why didn’t Jehaerys told me about her? I sigh. He never even told me that he had a sister. He was never the sharing type. He likes to keep everything to himself. “She died. Because she was too weak and Jehaerys was too powerful. Nature demands the balance of the scale.” He just sounded like Master Ben. Who keeps saying that there must be a balance that has to be maintained. When I looked at him, he looks so broken and a man full of sorrow. I keep wondering how did this man become a monster? When I looked at his hand, electricity dances along with his fingers. Is he trying to cast? “Are you here to kill me?” I said without looking at him. He c***s his head to one side. I clutch my fingers into fists. “If I wanted to kill you, you’d be dead by now, Lady Elizabeth. And, even if Pol and I are in a compromise situation. I wouldn’t take it out on a girl. I fight fair,” “Oh. Do you?” I said, shaking my head in disbelief. His eyes darken, and I wonder if I have pushed him too far. I didn’t have to summon my fire, the string was already on my hands as it waits to be freed. “I better go.” The King of Vendetta said. “But, it was nice to finally meet you, Elizabeth Prior,” I smiled, “I wish I could say the same, your majesty.” I said. He smirked. “The next time you command Master Ben to get into my head, kindly tell him to try harder this time. Perhaps, his efforts don’t have to go to waste.” I said. Then, I made it into the exit door. When I turned the corner back to the Great Hall, Rhaena has a long kindjal on both hands as she walked still in disguised of Sofia Sandsteel. Looking murderous and with tears falling from her eyes. I looked back at the door of the balcony and realized where she is head. Behind her is Hanter, the guy who waited outside of the Infirmary room for me the day I gave Jehaerys a healing potion. “Rhaena stopped!” he shouted. I realized that he is Nikolas and he’s obviously trying to stop her from attacking Jeorne on the Balcony. I grabbed her before she can even open the door. I sealed the door, and she scowls at me. “Open that damn door, lowborn. Or, I’m going to burn you alive,” she said. “You can, Rhaena. But, I will not let you murder him. You’re just proving him that you’re just like him,” She sneers at me and throws fire on the wooden door. Once she has broken my sealing spell, she kicked the door open and before she could step inside. I grabbed her wrist that was filled with furious fire,  “Et tu dormies cantandum!” I chanted. Then with one step forward she crumpled like a puppet suddenly released of their strings. Nikolas goes frantic with a murderous glare, “What did you do Elizabeth?” “It was a sleeping spell,” I said. He sighed in relief. “Where is he?” I pointed at the balcony. He padded towards the balcony, skipping Rhaena’s unconscious body on the floor. I sighed. She’s going to kill me once she wakes up. I’m sure Nik can handle her. When he returned, he looks like he has seen a ghost. “He’s not there,” he said.
